W- 1 i 1-IEME GXPLANATION URING recent years there has existed a great period of transition for Dulce University, a period of development and of expansion from the place of a small South- ern college to that of a great modern univer- sity of nation-wide prominence and influence. But in its essentials the Dulce of today embodies the ideals and the aims that made Trinity College a powerful factor for the cultural and spiritual development of North Carolina. In the malcing of the year boolc for 1930, the CHANTICLEER staff has used a historical theme, one rep- resenting important events in the life of Dulce Univer- sity and in the lives of some of those who have been associated with this, an inspiring institution, possessing a noble ambition for service to manlcind. Each divi- sion page in this volume is suggestive of some period in the history of Trinity and Dulce, and may each one be a reminder of the invaluable contributions that the College and the University have made to progress and achievement for well-nigh a century. Pine branches were chosen as a basis for the art motif of the 1930 CHANTICLEER because they are rep- resentative of North Carolina, Dulce's home, and the area in whose development she has had so large a part. We trust that those Who peruse these pages may find in them something of the soul of Dulce University, a great benevolent being, young in a physical sense, but old in service and in the possession of a forceful spiritual ideal.
