ra Mabel When mortals lamented that sunlight was silent, That language had limit, and passion had pall, That color lacked sweetness, and perfume would perish, The gods granted music, uniting them all. lVIusic was the first sound heard in the creation, when the morning stars sang together. It was the first sound heard at the birth of Christ, when the angels sang together above the plains of Bethlehem. lt is the universal language, which appeals to the universal heart of manlcindfl No life is well rounded or complete without a knowledge and love of music. So our endeavor is to implant in each student a love and appreciation of all that is best and most beautiful in the works of the great composers of both the past and the pres- ent. The time has long since passed when music was regarded merely as a pastime. It has taken its place as one of the fine arts-and none of them offers a broader field for culture. VVhat is there in painting greater than lX'lozart's Requiem, Haydn's Creation or Gluck's operas? VVhat is there in sculpture grander than Bach's Passion Music or Handel's lblessiah?
