The Macon Vocational School was first established in Bibb County in 1933. It be- came a combination vocational school and accredited high school in 1947. It has been customary for the schools in B ibb County to be named for men who have contributed something to education. The Bibb County Board of Educa- tion decided this should be done at the Macon Vocational School. Dudley M. Hughes was selected in honor of Con- gressman Hughes. Mr. Hughes, along with Senator Hoke Smith, sponsored the first act in the U. S. Congress providing federal support to vocational education. The name was officially changed on the first of July, 1955.
