Petty Officer Chernouski enlisted under the Nax Delayed Entry Program February 4, 1980, and upon early graduation from high school in January 198 5 reported for Recruit Training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, Ca. F Petty Officer Chernouski successfully completed Machinist Mate Class A School July 21, 1981 anew Mate. As a young inexperienced fireman, Petty Officer Chernouski was aboard just five short months when hx had completed qualifications for five different watchstations. Petty Officer Chernouski was eventuall' to attain the highest qualification possible, engineroom supervisor and Machinist Mate of the Watcli Petty Officer Chernouski received a letter of Commendation for Superior Performance during th. period from July 1, 1980 to December 30, 1981. June 16, 1983, Petty Officer Chernouski was advanced tx., Machinist Mate Third Class and in December 1983 he received his second letter of Commendation fo. Exceptional professional ability, initiative and dedication to duty. Petty Officer Chernouski was als f awarded the Sea Service Ribbon and the Battle 'E'. Petty Officer Chernouski was an exceptionally able sailor and an excellent Machinist Mate whos 1, performance always exceeded what was expected of him. His constant drive to improve himself, hit cheerful attitude and his positive outlook affected all who came in contact with him. His indomitabl spirit will live on in all of us. He received his BA Degree from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee in June 1960 and was com- missioned an Ensign in January 1961 through the Officer Candidate School Program. Captain McManis assumed command of the USS DUBUQUE CLPD-85 July 16, 1983. His pre- vious sea assignments include USS RANDOLPH QCVS-155 as Division Officer, USS BEXAR QAPA-2375 as Communications Officers, Oper- ations Officer aboard the USS O'HARE QDD- 8895, Executive Officer of the USS DURHAM, CLKA-1145, Commanding Officer of USS BRIS-1 TOL COUNTY QLST-11985 and Amphibious Squadron FIVE's Chief Staff Officer.
