PO1 Main Propulsion Number One is primarily responsible for the smooth operation of the number 1 Main ' Machinery Room. Comprised of Machinist Mates and Boiler Technicians, MPO1 is divided into three work centers. c at . EBO1 is made up of Boiler Techs who are responsible for operation and maintenance of 4961 boiler and its associated equipment, everything from Main Feed Fumps to Forced Draft Blowers. It is never an easy life being a Boiler Tech, considering the long hours spent on either working on boiler maintenance or just standing watches in the fireroom. But these guys take pride in knowing that its their steam that propels the ship through the water, generates the ship's electrical power, provides steam to the galley's kettles and ship's laundry, even the ship's whistle will not blow without their steam. Another work center is EMO1 which is composed of Machinist Mates and is responsible for the care, maintenance and operation of the ifl main engine, reduction gears, the starboard shaft, main and auxillary condensers and other auxillary equipment. In addition, EMO1 is responsible for the operation and mainten- ance of 4791 distilling plant which provides the ship with fresh water for drinking, cooking and in the showers or as feedwater for the boilers. EB14, the Oil and Water Test and Treatment Labratory or bettern known as the Oil Shack, is run by oil and water kings or just plain oil kings. Oil kings are a special breed, most of whom hailed from the ranks of top performers in the machinery rooms. Those who have a good understanding about steam propulsion will agree that the Oil Shack is the backbone of the plants. For the responsibilities of the oil kings range from testing and treating boiler water to ensure that is maintained within prescribed limits to prevent boiler tube failures to ensuring that only bacterial-free waterris distributed throughout the ship. xr. kssfgfivv , ENS GREGORY A.
