E DIVISION There is nothing on the ship that is not dependent on electrical power and it is the electricians onboard the Dubuque who monitor and control its distribution from the turbogenerators in the main machinery spaces, through the switchboards and from there to every part of the ship. Keeping all systems functioning is alone a full-time job, but the EMS and IC men are a close knit team of professionals trained to respond at the very first sign of trouble. The IC men are responsible for our new Dimension 2000 phone system, the ship's television and radio stations, and the ship's gyro compasses all of which are in top working order, just to name a few. Fork-lift trucks, ship's boats, signal and navigation lights, elevators and 'monorails are just a few examples of the myriad challenges that confront the electricians, besides the more obvious lighting and ventilation systems. And of course there is the Movie Call every night on the mess decks, perhaps the most highly visible and appreciated of all the jobs an electrician may perform. LTJG GERALD v.
