They also function as the officer's equivelant of the Personnel Office. Lithographers duties consist of running the ship's print shop which prints nearly all of the ship's reproduced material - much of it in a hurry and after hours. The ship's Journalist runs the shipboard television and radio stations, KDBQ, and keeps the crew informed of what's going on in the news around the world. The Personnelmen are responsible for all transfers, seperations, advancements and an assortment of other services to the enlisted community. The outstanding services provided include oral surgery, preventive den- istry, endodontics, periodontics and operative denistry. During the WESTPAC deployment, the department treated over 1 100 crew members, embarked Marines and Korean troops. The busiest day included two broken jaws, tone Navy, one Marine! within one hour of each other during a holiday routine, which required wiring and medavac to Guam. Dental volunteered their efforts in providing dental examinations, distributing home care kits, and lecturing on proper oral home care to 155 children at Longos Elementary School, Republic of the Philippines in conjunction with the Humanitarian Project. As a result of Dental's concerted efforts onboard, the ship maintained the highest operational dental readiness in PHIBRON Five and achieved a 100 percent readiness level for the quarter ending June 1984. The department members participated in various sports activities including boxing, tug-o-war and other Pro-Oly events, 10K runs and softball. Img, S LT LAWRENCE A. E DIVISION There is nothing on the ship that is not dependent on electrical power and it is the electricians onboard the Dubuque who monitor and control its distribution from the turbogenerators in the main machinery spaces, through the switchboards and from there to every part of the ship. Keeping all systems functioning is alone a full-time job, but the EMS and IC men are a close knit team of professionals trained to respond at the very first sign of trouble. The IC men are responsible for our new Dimension 2000 phone system, the ship's television and radio stations, and the ship's gyro compasses all of which are in top working order, just to name a few. Fork-lift trucks, ship's boats, signal and navigation lights, elevators and 'monorails are just a few examples of the myriad challenges that confront the electricians, besides the more obvious lighting and ventilation systems. And of course there is the Movie Call every night on the mess decks, perhaps the most highly visible and appreciated of all the jobs an electrician may perform. LTJG GERALD v. Comprised of Machinist Mates and Boiler Technicians, MPO1 is divided into three work centers. c at . EBO1 is made up of Boiler Techs who are responsible for operation and maintenance of 4961 boiler and its associated equipment, everything from Main Feed Fumps to Forced Draft Blowers. It is never an easy life being a Boiler Tech, considering the long hours spent on either working on boiler maintenance or just standing watches in the fireroom. But these guys take pride in knowing that its their steam that propels the ship through the water, generates the ship's electrical power, provides steam to the galley's kettles and ship's laundry, even the ship's whistle will not blow without their steam. Another work center is EMO1 which is composed of Machinist Mates and is responsible for the care, maintenance and operation of the ifl main engine, reduction gears, the starboard shaft, main and auxillary condensers and other auxillary equipment. In addition, EMO1 is responsible for the operation and mainten- ance of 4791 distilling plant which provides the ship with fresh water for drinking, cooking and in the showers or as feedwater for the boilers. EB14, the Oil and Water Test and Treatment Labratory or bettern known as the Oil Shack, is run by oil and water kings or just plain oil kings. Oil kings are a special breed, most of whom hailed from the ranks of top performers in the machinery rooms. Those who have a good understanding about steam propulsion will agree that the Oil Shack is the backbone of the plants. For the responsibilities of the oil kings range from testing and treating boiler water to ensure that is maintained within prescribed limits to prevent boiler tube failures to ensuring that only bacterial-free waterris distributed throughout the ship. xr. kssfgfivv , ENS GREGORY A. Hurry, the boys are hungry. A 1 These are just some of the groceries the Mess Management Specialists prepared for 5 the crew during our deployment. I The Foodservice Division QS-25 under the leadership of Ens. Brodette and MSCM Senar contributed greatly to the overall morale and bulging midrifts of the Dubuque crew. The Dubuque cooks earned themselves the reputation of being among the most professional and skillfull chefs in the Pacific Navy. Flexibility and dedication were routinely practiced as evidenced by the many suc- cessful Steel Beach cookouts and Special Menu occasions enjoyed by the crew.
