Divisi M Division is the second part of the ship 's main propulsion team. lt's primary responsibility is the care and operation of the ship's main engines, reduction gears, shafts, and all related auxiliary machinery. Operation of the two main engines, each of which develops 12,000 shaft horsepower, gives the ship a maximum speed in excess of 20 knots. During this cruise, each of the shafts revolved over 30 million times for a total of almost 50 000 miles Durin th' ' , . g is six month deployment the ship traveled almost 10,000 more miles than it did during last years eight month deployment. ln addition to main propulsion machinery, lVl Division personnel are in charge of the ships distilling plants which convert sea water into drinking water and water for the boilers. The capacity of these units is 60,000 gallons per day and have allowed DUBUQUE t k h ' ' o ma e t e entire deployment without imposing restricted water regulations These distillin 't I . g uni s produced almost 10.5 million gallons of fresh water during this six month period. ?.......
