There are two rating structures within the Electrical Division. They are the Electricians Mates and the Interior Communications Electricians. Electrician's Mate: Almost every operation aboard ship, routine or emergency, requires electrical power for its accomplishment. A ship that has lost electrical power has lost its capability as a fighting unit. As Electricians Mates, our main concern is for the operation and maintenance of the equipment used to generate and distribute electrical power. We are also responsible for the maintenance and repair of motors, like our training aid, the A.C. circ water pump motor, batteries, control devices, emergency diesel generators, degauss- ing systems, anchor windlass, electrical galley equipment, a 16,000 cargo elevator, pallet conveyors, electro-hydraulic steering gear, small craft electrical systems, and the NE Division's favorite, the overhead monorail system. Interior Communications Electrician: The '6IC', men repair and maintain the gyro com- pass system, navigation systems, amplified and unamplified voice systems, alarm and warning systems and related equipment. Here several MIC classification codes for jobs that require special training: automatic telephone repairman, closed circuit television technician, gyro compass repairman, optical landing system technician, and submarine steering and diving control technician. The NIC man must have a sound working knowl- edge of both the basic principles of electricity and electronics.
