Nolan Operation Officer Operations Intelligence QOIQ Divisionis composed of radarmen whose main function is to provide the Commanding Officer and the underway OOD with vital information concerning air and surface activity within the range of the shipls radars and to recommend actions concerning the movement of the ship during most of the underway evolutions. Within CIC, or Combat Information Center, or more appropriately uCenter of Intense Confusionw, these mole-lik6 people twist knobs, push buttons and spill coffee in every effort to plot courses and speeds, obtain navigational positions, and generally drive the OOD to distraction with a continual flow in incoherent numbers and tongue-twisted dissertations. CIC resembles a uBat Cavew . . . Silent, Dark, and Ice Cold, itls the only spot in tropical Vietnam where one is capalllfi of developing pneumonia if not properly outfitted in winter woolens, ear muffs,'and gloves. H The radarrnanls environment and frequent watches are not made easier by the constant changes forced upon him. IH fact, he has learned to be as flexible as the ship's schedule. Before the cruise, his outlook was one of uncertainty, but CIC lived up to its task. Those familiar radar echoes of San Diego Harbor never looked better, not only to OI Division, but to everyone aboard as we finished a most enlightening cruise. EJ 152 - fl
