Oh, you mean it's just a skit? For a minute I thought . . . never mind. Do I hear someone singing? In a French class? What's going on around here? Looks like these foreign languages bear further investigation. Somebody seems to have done away with dull routine and made learning a language fun. And then there's that crazy language lab where the kids talk to themselves. Nuts! Well, I guess foreign language is a real cool subject after all. 9 Murder in German class! PROBLEMS Social studies--ick! Nothing but maps, charts, and a bunch of dead people. Well, Iguess there were a few exciting moments For instance, what junior could forget the skits that revived the past in American history class? Quite likely, problems teachers wondered more than once if they were teaching Am- erican problems or teaching to American problems. And I almost forgot about Paisley Day, when economics students Wore paisley prints to honor The Great Bill Paisley. Well, it seems that social studies isn't so bad after all. Social studies students of '67 certainly found that a course in a social science at Senior can be a real ex- perience. Susan l-luseman and Janice Hutchins travel around the world. 27 Mike Addyman bears down hard on his geometry as COMPASSES CALCULATORS To some students, math is a jigsaw puzzle in which none of the pieces seem to interlock. Good grief! one student laments. How do they expect me to divide 8, 103, 345, 608 by 414. 1307 Oh, no! another student wails. I flunked another algebra test. Help! Ugh! says a third student dejectedly. This circle looks like a flattened pancake. How can I get this geometric figure drawn correctly? These kids need all the help they can get. They should spend some time in the new math lab, where they can find all sorts of gadgets from Auto Tutors and adding machines to Compasses and calculators. Happiness is having a calculator to do your long division for you. Happiness is using the Auto Tutor to teach yourself all the things you missed on the last test. Happiness is having a compass to draw a circle that doesn't look like a squashed pumpkin. Happiness is finding that all the jigsaw puzzle pieces really do fit together. AND 28 signment. X ...NK Miss Kraut certainly knows her business when it comes to geometry! 5 - Vv qz .. :-' Q Lf . Q Q 'E Even though it might seem like Cape Kennedy, it is only Robert Mond, Faith Weiblen, and Darryl Ring working in the math lab. Darlene Schmidt and Doris Konichck busily work at basic math in the paper-adorned classroom. 29 Practical application in general science class. EQUATIONS AND EXPERIMENTS Do you go in for sports, adventures, or thrill- ing excitement? Well, science offers something to everyone . Racing small sports cars is one Way to learn about gravity even though it may not sound very scientific. Maybe you are an adventurous soul . Ever try mixing two poisons and tasting the result? flt was demonstrated in class, but no money was collected for a funeral Wreath.j When the two poisons are mixed in equal amounts they turn into a harmless salt solution. Animal lovers would certainly enjoy the nature hikes, but would probably not like the idea of dissecting a cat. Mystery fans would like the assignments given out in chem class. lt's up to the student to figure out What's in the jar the teacher handed him . And what could be more romantic that staring at your lab partner by bunsen burner light? 30 Sue Mareske uses the microscope to get a close look. ww - . , Home ec? No, it's just Carol Peacock and fellow physiology students investigating the interior of a cat. tl fi Chem students Dave Howell and Steve Behlmer watch with utter admiration, as Brent Appel makes a third try at heating a Crucible. Although it looks like some weird creature with two arms, it's only West Heitzman getting an assist in physics class. Linda Shade holds the undivided attention of her students in Business English. PLAYS AND PEOPLE Et tu Brute! These dramatic words from the play JULIUS CAESAR are being uttered in an English class, as a student in the back of the room is muttering, I'm lost! That Shake- speare fella writes Chinese! I can't under- stand a darn thing! Trouble brews for another student: What if she calls on me? My report isn't ready! Thank heaven for kids that volunteer. Well, looks like mine isn't due until tomorrow. What luck! Now that I think of it, the book reports presented were interesting and well given. Golly, I wish I'd read my book earlier and had had time to really enjoy it . Tonight I'm going to get down to brass tacks and make my report fun and exciting to listen to. TOOLS AND T-SQUARES Have you ever Walked along the backside of school on a Warm day and heard strange sounds coming from the tech building? You may often have wondered what types of ac- tivities could cause such a commotion. A little investigation Would real that these sounds are being produced through the combined efforts of man and machine. Did you ever think of the tech building as a ga- rage, machine shop, and drawing room all rolled into one? The upper level is conspicuous for its lack of sound, but hardly for its lack of activity. Here the silence of concentra- tion is broken only by pounds of moving tools in the hands of future draftsmen and engineers. In contrast, the lower floors echo the sounds of rolling presses, whir- ring machines, and voices calling instructions. While unique, the tech building is an ac- tive and real part of Senior. Ron Jones concentrates on feeding the printing press. Ted Soppe refers to the text book to solve a stalling problem in mechanics. 34 V . will Ja ff I A if .f-- '- ,,s.J'B2 A? PIES AND PATTERNS Oh, the trials and tribulations of home economics class! There girls get together to master fsometimes the hard Wayj the fine arts of cook- ing, sewing, and home management Learning to sew saves money, and who isn't interest in that? Be- sides, a girl will feel ten feet tall when she finally completes that dress she took the zipper out of five times! Giving a room a face lift? Home ec. can help there too. The room might look like an abstract painting because the idea of combining two colors of paint left a ghastly Wall, but after all, paint's cheap. A pie that's burned, an unman- ageable zipper, a budget that Won't balance--that's the story of the ups and downs of home economics class I ,4 Sylvia Frommelt and Diane Farnurn could spend hours pouring over pattern books. Since a woman's work is never done, Don Merrick lends a help ing hand. Hmm--this letter doesn't seem to make sense. Wonder if my shorthand's at fault? TAXES AND TYPING As the hidden camera slowly moves in on the business room We see thirty typewriters going at a furious pace. Y-n... m...4ui Talk about the Stone Age when the gal clubbed the unaware victim, this is ridicu- lous! Dramatic class can sure get exciting. Ahem! AS Ken Weitz is intently thinking over the matter D E B E E N D Wes Heitzman seems to be taking a snooze during a debate DICTION The auditorium erupts violently. The audience rises as one as the cast makes its final cutain call for the biggest show ever to hit Broadway. A speaker strides toward the podium. Standing confidently behind it, he begins to speak. In a moment the audience is his. Congressman? . . . Lawyer? . . . Professor? . . . President? These days dreams are a long way from speech classes at Senior, but students can get a good start here. Eloquent testimony of the quality of the speech department is given by the successful plays staged in the auditorium and by triumphant debaters and speech-makers. Hit on Broadway, conquest at podium--just day dreams? Yes, at least, right now . . . Patty Moss presents her viewpoints to a speech class of seemingly all males. Oh the sadness of it all! 38 2 K Kal. 2 - K-U4 A n vi k.. 1 INK AND IDEAS The art department is one of the unusual classrooms in school. Where else could one expect to dodge flying Wood chips, or see a room which resembles a cross between Santa's Christmas Workshop and an art gallery with prints strung at head-ducking level from the ceiling and hung on the walls. Don't be appalled to see someone with dirty stained hands--he may just have come from art class. As an art student, there's often not much time for personal repair Work. The entire art department is filled with signs of active humanity busily applying mental and physical forces to nature to create art. Lechnir's senior guidance class listens to a talk on college plans. ,Sf 42' Mr. Becker carries on a discussion with his junior guidance class. COLLEGE AND CAREERS Guidance is defined as the act, pro- cess or result of guiding. Some might wish to distort this to readg the act of going to guidance class is: a painful process and a very misguiding ordeal. Those who would interpret the definition in this manner are probably the ones who are sleeping in class, and don't know what they're missing. Guidance mean taking Watching an or punching Guidance to see one's finally made take another Schedule str is actually unique. It can a tour through the library, endless variety of films, holes in an interest test. also means standing in line counselor, and having it, discovering that it will half hour to get one's aightened out. FUN AND FITNESS 12 3 4 X 2 2 3 4 --What's this? A class in the new math? No . . . there's only one place where you learn to count like this. Of course, gym class. Walk by either gym any hour of any day and you'l1 hear young, vibrant voices clearly shouting out these numbers, keeping time to jumping jacks, deep knee bends, arm circles, push-ups, and other back-breaking, neck-stretching, muscle-tightening exercises. Gym class is that place Where twice a Week you loosen f up and completely exhaust yourself physi- cally, so that for the other five days you , can walk around tight and stiff. Is it Worth it? Sure! In gym class everyone gets to learn the skills and the rules and has a chance to compete on an equal basis. That's why those aches and pains don't count, too much . . . Volleyball provides a real lift for this he-mari gym class. it ,,..-L Q- -.. ,... A driver's education student learns operating procedures of driving from Mr. Bentz. 42 FUN AND FESTIVAL Early one May morning, fourteen busses pulled up in front of Senior High School. Four hundred teenagers piled out and bore down upon the building. There Du- buque students met them and soon an anticipatory hum of conversation could be heard. Participants from Clinton, Freeport, and Dubuque spent most of the two -day festival preparing the long and difficult programs. Guest conductors were on hand to evaluate the choirs, orchestras, and bands, and offer constructive criticisms. An evening concert followed each day of rehearsal, with the bands performing on the first night, and the chorus and orchestra providing the second evening's entertainment. Some of the less serious moments of the festival were the ones spent at a dance sponsored by the Student Council. ' The massed choir, orchestra, and band performed the tremendous OnWard Ye Peoples for the climax and finale of the Seventeenth Tri-Double-I festival. 43 Mr Schockemoehl warms up a voice class. MADRIGALS Soft whispers, a few giggles, and several voices figured prominently in this year's vocal music department. Room 51 frequently provided the setting and a piano set the pace. Actually more Work than play Went into these sessions. Read- ing music, singing on pitch, and constant rehearsing required plenty of patience and hard Work. Both chorus and glee club discovered that practice was the key to success. The effort of the music department has been evident in the many productions --the variety show, Christmas assembly, and the spring concert. At left Mr. Schockemoehl rehearses with the mixed quartet and the girls' trio. Adding distinction, entertainment and a boost for spirits during hard times to school games gives the band plenty of reason for being a large organization. On a crisp fall day the band can be heard throughout the entire building as they drag through their maneuvers. Although less strenuous, orchestra presents concerts for the good listening and pleasure of numerous crowds. But how does competition enter into a young Senior High musician's life? Talented players represent their school in local and statewide contests. This is a good Way to find out Who's who in loWa's musical World. WEIRD CHARACTERS DOMINATE PLAY Kittens, snakes, and a printing press--what is the drama department coming to? As the curtains opened to reveal Penny Sycamore typing to an audience of live snakes and kittens, it was clear that You Can't Take lt With You was no ordinary play. The main character was Grandpa Sycamore who had quit working in the prime of life having decided that, after all, if you can't take it with you, why bother? The action centered around Alice Sycamore's love affair with Tony Kirby which ended when Tony's par- ents came to dinner. It was not only the wrong night but there was nothing to eat but cornflakes, the Kirby's quarrelled over a silly game, and Mr. Kirby's glasses were broken when Kolenkov used him to dem- onstrate Wrestling. To make a bad nightmare worse, the Sycamores and guests spent the night in jail. The J-men had caught up with the subversive literature, illegal fire- works, and unpaid taxes . The adventure of the Sycamores came to a cheer- ful close as Mr. Kirby adopted Grandpa's philosophy and the lovers got together again. 54 Penny Sycamore fCarol Peacockj prac tices her painting, another of the un- usual hobbies of the Sycamore family. ,44 Surrounding Queen Margaret are her princesses Patti Glass Rosemary Johnson Linda Kramer and Ellen March HOMECOMING SPIRI FILLS THE AIR A squeal of delight, a rousing cheer, a chorus of Alma Mater, and Homecoming 1966 was in full swing From the time Queen Margaret Widmyer was crowned in the assembly until the Wee hours of Sunday morn ing, students of Senior displayed a true homecoming spirit Dubuquers, Watching students line Main Street to cheer on the parade, sensed this enthusiasm and excitement Ram fans shared their disappointment as a threat- ening sky turned to rain at game time. Two of the most mag- netic personalities in the law profession, raging a personal war while fighting the controversial case of Bert Cates. Accused of teaching Darwin's theory of evolution, Cates faces severe consequences from the gospel -bent citizens of Hillsboro. The humid summer air spreads across the outdoor court room with such generosity that paper fans are used to cool the space where the unpreventable heat is steadily rising as the two lawyer's tempers flare. Witnesses range from a young student, who comes to the conclusion that Cates's teachings had no visible effect on him, to the pastor's daughter Rachel Brown, who has become involved with Bert Cates . After several tedious and exerting days the ver- dict is delivered. Bert Cates has been found guilty. Brady dies shortly after. To each man the verdict had been pondered over in his mind. Some think that the council is in cahoots with the higher -ups, while others think the council is supposed to wage war with the school administrators for our rights , Even student council members admit' that it is a problem letting the rest of the school in on their actions and plans. The people, especially the FOURTH ESTATE, that criticize the council never complain when the council does something great and grand for them, like the Mid -Term Hop or the bookstore. As one member said, We do a lot of little things that count. One of the little things the council takes care of is the bulletin board of weekly announcementsby the main office. My first impressions of the USA when I got out of JFK airport at New York did not overwhelm me as I had expected because I come from a large city- -Calcutta Actually, it was my first sight of Dubuque which completely fascinated me and from that very moment, I knew I would thoroughly enjoy my all -too-short one year stay here, The wooden residential houses, the boule- vards, and the hills left me open-mouthed with wonder - -everything was so beautiful. And then came my first day at Senior High- -quite lost and bewildered by all the classrooms, teachers, and students - -all of whom were so friendly and sweet and ever so willing to help me. After only a few days, when I had gotten used to unfamiliar, smiling faces coming up and saying 'Hi!', and helping me to find my classrooms, I am sure I could hardly have felt more at home. Before I came to the US, I had not met any Americans and my impressions of them had been formed second hand. I had always thought that all that American kids thought of was the latest fashions, movies and movie stars, and fun. But I was mistaken. I found out, soon after I came here, that though they pay a lot of attention to the latest fads, studies too, play an important role in the American teenager's lifeg and in the schools it is studies first and extra -curricular activities second, not vice -versa as I had thought. This whole year had been like a fantasy in dream- land. Soon I will wake up and find myself at home in Calcutta, but the memories will stay forever, to be relived over and over. Rita Gupta, Calcutta 76 ,f I T i- i ff' W W... lf! il . :- I, 'ri .Q Lymwl, r .. in I My vast experience as an AFS stu- dent started the day I stepped into the plane for the first time from my hometown. The plane trip over the Congo jungles and the desert of Sahara was only the beginning, Later followed the crossing of the great Atlantic and then to New York. The bus trip from New York to Daven- port gave me a chance to see the vast farm land of the Midwest. In Davenport I met my American family, the john Hallenbecks. They warmly welcomed me and brought me to Dubuque. I come from a family of eight. I have three sisters and two brothers who are all younger than I. In my hometown I went to a small high school run by Catholic Christian Brothers from New York. I enjoy practically every kind of sport but my favorite is soccer which I miss a lot while I am here. My experience in the U.S. is so vast that I run short of words to express it. For one thing, the climate over here is very different. Early one morning last December, I looked out my bedroom window and was surprised to see our backyard as white as could be. I ran out and there I saw snow for the first time in my life. The change in climate over here is fascinating. I am used to the climate in my country which is mild all year round. It would be very difficult for me to speak in general about the people of America from only a year's experience. Nevertheless I will say some words from what I have seen. Americans are people who are proud of their fore- fathers and very much conscious of the fact that they are one of the greatest nations in the world. They also have a limited knowledge of the rest of the world. Among other things, Americans are hard -working people who also love to enjoy their modern conveniences They are also mobile and have a good sense of humor. I am very glad to have spent this year in Dubuque and I would like to thank everyone of you for making my year a successful one. Girma Wolde Mariam, Addis Ababa 77 Hans and the Steiningers Now, when you receive this edition of the Echo we are close to the end of the school year '66f6'7. This means also the end of the scholarship year for me. Having a review over the time from August I9, 1966 and today, I can only sayg It was a great year . There is no doubt about the influence and importance this past year has and will have for my future life. There were days in my Senior High Life' marked by downs when it became obvious that even an AFS-student cannot escape F's . But these few occasions were over -balanced by the many, many hours of fun and joy even school brought. History taught me that George Washington did not receive his name by the U.S. capital. In English I learned about Sinclair Lewis' appearance in Dubuque's Orpheum and that the kind of paragraphing in English is dif- ferent from the one in journalism. Chorus gave me the opportunity to get rid ofgmy superfluous energy without bothering anyone. In P.E, I got to know that the loser has to run twenty rounds or how to throw a football cor - rectly Cbut I got to know that it doesn't v necessarily include that I can do it yetj. Last but not least my favorite class deserves a special mention: Lunch-period. When I'm back home I'll miss this class most. But school was also essential in the after- noon when IRC held its meetings or the HRC called to work. Sometimes I contributed Cmore time thank work to PA. But I 78 want to make clear that it wasn't my fault when one wrestling meet last january did not start with the National Anthem. Speech Class brought a more or less successful contest out of state, and on many Fridays I felt it necessary to sup- port the football team or basketball team by my appearance. Let me thank my host family, Dr. and Mrs . Earl Steininger, the American Field Service, the IRC. But I am also grateful to Dubuque Senior High's faculty and student body for all the help and hospitality I experienced. Hans Ulrich Krieger f Huck b w, if at . Very late in the quiet of the evening, a car sped through the empty, narrow streets of Lisbon. Only moments before at the airport I had been warmly welcomed into a new family. It had to be some fantastic dream I thought, but as I stepped from the car to the cobble-stoned walk in front of my new home, I suddenly realized the full impact of my situation. As an AFS Americans Abroad student, I had been selected to live in Portugal with a host family for the duration of the summer. The Portuguese live in a world all of their own. It is a world which, for the most part, shuns the 20th century and clings to the identify of a glorious past. Today Portugal struggles to maintain an empire twenty -three times its size against a surging tide of anti-imperialism. For the common man life is much the same as it was in 1498 when Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India .P High on hill top perches, windmills mournfully creak with the breeze. The burro remains an important mode of trans - portation, and to this day wine boats navigate the Duro River. Young women persist in singing the fado, and the young men still love the excitement of bull -fighting . That unforgettable evening in Lisbon as I stepped from the car, I sensed my situation, but little did I realize I was to be taught one of the finest lessons in life. The Portuguese live in an antique world, but it is a world which stresses the art of living happily, with the unity of the family most important.
