K Hans Schwantje J A SENIORS A QB twelve Class of 1956 Standing: Sue Carlton, Secretaryg Margo Vyverberg, President, Mary Dempsey, Treasurer Sitting: Jane Collentine, Vice-President, Carole Schwinger, Secretary. Our last year at Senior had hardly begun and it was over. Remember in the fall how we seniors thought it was going to be a long wait until com- mencement? Being so absorbed in homework, clubs, school plays, games, and jobs we didn't realize the year was passing so quickly. We had a wonderful year full of rewards and promises. Many of us had good jobs before school was over and many more were promised jobs follow- ing commencement. Still there were others who by their efforts were given scholarships to continue their education. Preparing floats for the Homecoming parade, preparing acts for the Variety Show, and decorating the gym for numerous dances we worked feverishly. The night we played Davenport on our home floor was one of the thrilling events of the year. As you may recall we never did have a dull moment. However, we realized that high school was more than just social time, we knew that soon we would be independent and that being independent we would have to be mentally mature. We took the responsibility of getting our work finished on time. We put first things first and in doing so we prepared to meet the hard knocksn of life as strong minded men and women. The Old and New Dubuque Wberi Iulien Dubuque, tlve first settler of Iowa arrived in 1783 at tbe site of what is now Dubuque, lie made friends with tlve Fox Indians. Tbc Indians at that time were doing some limited lead mining. On one occasion when fulien Dubuque wanted a favor from the Indians, be threatened to burn tbe Mississippi River if they didn't grant his request. Julien had bis men pour oil into Catfish Creeleg and Wlrile conferring with tbe Indians around the bonfire, be tlrrew a flame upon tbe Water. A fire arose burning the oil on tbe surface of the water. The terrified Indians granted his request! After fulien Dubuqueis deatlv tlre Indians tried to prevent otber wbites from coming on their land and mining their Wealtb. Social Studies Government, giving all seniors it bebtcr understanding of their govern- ment, is required and classed under Social Studies. In 1830 james L. Langivorthy and Lucius Langworthy arrived in Dubuque along with many others searching for iveaith. Dubuque, as a settlement, began to take form. Mining and other industries sprang up. In 1833 Chester Sage and Breyton Bushbee built the first sawmill. The first school was built in 1833 and the first church a year later. Agriculture took a firm hold on the region around Dubuque. The settlers couldn't forget the hardship of their first winter because many died of disease and starvation. A miner named Foxg james Frith, a blacksmithg and Mrs. Cullom and her child were the first to be buried in the new churchyard located where we now have jackson Park. -'About 1836 there was a mining boom in Dubuque. Lucius Langivorthy struck the biggest iode ever discovered in Du- buque. Even in recent years Dr. H, G. The Dubuque High Rams played probably the toughest schedule of any team in the state. Aside from playing the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in Iowa, we played Freeport, a strong Illinois team and Sioux Falls, So. Dakota, the powerhouse of the Northwest. In every game our Rams played to the best of their ability, never quiting even against over- whelming odds. The game against Davenport, the No. l team in Iowa, was much closer than the score indicated, Init Davenportls bigger men wore the Rams down and finally defeated us. The Rams, most exciting victory was the homecoming game against Roosevelt of Cedar Rapids. The score, which was 34 to 33, indicated the offensive power displayed by both teams. Roger Carlson was elected all-conference fullback and Terry Harris was elected all-con- ference end. junior Glen VValters threw eight touchdown passes in the last four games. Many times we may see the historical sites of Dubuque without our being aware of their association with the past. For instance, we have the shot tower which was erected during the Civil War to manufacture bullets for the Federal forces. The town clock, weighing 3,000 pounds, was installed in 1864. The oldest cabin rests today in Eagle Point Park. lt stood in 1836, at what is now the corner of Second and Locust Street. The cabin was occupied by a pioneer settler William New- man, whose nieices still reside in Dubuque. As the years passed, Dubuque rapidly changed from a small mining town into a highly industrialized city. Dubuque now has 168 manufacturing establishments, producing over 600 different articles. With the continued growth of industry, Dubuque? population grewg and the city's area increased from one square mile to fourteen square miles. Left: All tangled up! Dubuque can be considered a medical center. l'Ve have three general hospitals, one sanitorurn, and one sanitarium, all fully equipped and modern. The new water front area will be known as Dubuque Industrial Park? It will consist of 140 acres of choice industrial land. Many new enterprises wanting to come to Dubuque will be assured of an excellent location. These new industries will provide us with more jobs, higher wages and a better place to live. Probably even more important than the old and new Dubuque is the future Dubuque. April 6, 1955, this date proba- lily means a lot to you, that was the day Dubuquers went to the polls and voted for the new Waterfront plan. The members are: Photographer, Charles Steffensg editor, I O Hans Schwantjeg head photographer, Ronald Porterg business manager, joy Tuckerg write-up, Alice Kampg and Layout, Lowell Pettit. i.. ournalism Seated: Norma Hedley, Rosalie Zuckerman, Alice Kamp, Carole Schwinger, Don Massey, George Eit- ing, Sonia Shubert, Dick Guzzle. Many stores in the downtown area are remodeling their interiors, enlarging their floor space, and putting up beautiful fronts. Plans are being rarried out to give car owners more parking space. The major feature of road conditioning is the improvement of the entrances to the city. Dubuque has excellent chanres of becoming a resort area. Improving the sewage disposal will make the river a cleaner, safer, place for recreation. Because Dubuque has scenic beauty, many diversions, and can acromrnodate travelers-it has eight hotels and eighteen motels-tourists will probably flocle to Dubuque during the summer months.
