Class ol l95l4 Some years ago we started our climb up Education Hill. At that time the year l95-l seemed a long way off: but here it is. and here we are-fthe class of 195-l. For most of us seniors this has been a year ol' mixed emotions. We felt proud to be the seniors of the school, and we enjoyed the activities reserved for seniors. Still. as we studied and planned for our future. we began to wonder what life would be like alter we lett Senior High, ln the fall we eagerly turned our attention to our new courses, football. Homecoming. and the picture which would do us justice in the i'l:cho,' Seniors were soon shouldering 'iNews statl' and Echo jobs. During the winter we followed the basketball team: and, along with studying, we began to think about a future job or to look for the college which would suit our needs. We chose our calling cards and ordered graduation announcements. Then the day came when we were measured so that our graduation gowns wouldnt trip us as we reached for our diplom- as or the mortar board slide over one eye. XVill we ever forget the thrill of anticipation as we waited to hear whether our names would be called as new members of the National Honor Society or Quill and Scroll? XVith spring came the music contests and festival. spring sport. and the Junior-Senior Prom. Formals marked the Prom with glamor and gave us the sophistication of young so- cialites. Cases of pre-graduation dithers became more numerous and acute as the calendar brought us close to Baccalaureate and Commencement. In the junior year at Senior High most of us are at ease for the first time. for we are accustomed to the machinery of our school. Upperclassmen no longer adopt a superior air when they accost us, and yet the trials of the senior year are too far in the future to concern us. In looking back over our junior year, we find our ambitions and accomplishments were often synonomous. Among them was our winning the first prize for our Homecoming float. The purchase of class rings and the production of the Junior-Senior Prom numbered among our prime thrills. As juniors some of us had the opportunity of being elected to Boys' State, and the president of the Student Council was chosen from among us. In our junior year the athletes had a het- ter chance to play on the varsity teams. Familiarity with our surroundings and the many firsts of junior year were responsible for the pleasant and unforgettable memories of the class of 1955. The scared feeling experienced during the first few days of school soon disappeared as we became accepted members of the big family at Senior. During the first few months of school, we participated in the Ticket Campaign, Homecoming, Variety Show, election of class offi- cer and Student Council representatives. football practice. committee appointments. and club initiations. All the events mounted up-along with new classes. new teachers, and new class- mates -- to give us a sense of adventure supplanting the fear that we experienced when we were first admitted to those seemingly cold, stark walls. We sophomores had a get-acquainted party in gym early in the fall. Our first chance to present some of our talents came when three members of the first play cast were sophomores. The Christmas decorations in the cafeteria were our project. We ushered and decorated for Baccalaureate in June. Tennis The team this year was probably the most inexperienced ever to represent Senior on the courts: only three boys had previously taken part in competitive tennis. The season opened with a third place finish in the Waterloo Triangular meet. In dual meets the team won one while dropping six. The lone triumph was over Cedar Rapids Wilson, 7-O. The defeats came from the hands of Loras, Clinton. Iowa City, Moline, Davenport, and Oelwein. The lVI.V.C. tournament brought a tie for third place. In state district tournament play the Rams copped second place. Jim Kelly, emerging vic- torious in the singles competition. was entitled to participate in the state meet held on the Grinnell College courts. page ninety-five Combining speed, height, and reserve strength, John Orr's cagers compiled a record of 17 wins and 4 losses, tying a school record for games won in a season. For the first time in twenty-one years the Rams grabbed a share in the M.V.C. championship. Senior and Daven- port were Co-Champs with identical 9 to 1 records in conference play. In gaining their title share, the Rams dropped Clinton and Iowa City twice and defeated all four Cedar Rapids schools. The highlight of the year was the victory over Davenport be- fore a sell-out crowd. The lone conference loss was administered by Davenport. During the Christmas holiday the team traveled into Wisconsin and Illinois to bring back victories over Beloit and DeKalb. In the District 'Tournament Senior drew Clinton, the game being played on Clinton's home floor. After beating Clinton twice during the regular season, Senior, unable to accomplish the trick a third time, was eliminated from further tourney competition. Tom I-Iaye, although playing under the handicap of an injury, led the well-balanced scoring attack. Haye. Merritt and Dean were chosen to the first team All City, with Nora being named to the second five. At the season's close teammates elected Haye the most valuable player and Nora honorary captain. Then the diamond men, play' ing St. Joseph's of Bellevue, were eliminated from further tourney competition in a close game. 3 to 2. Returning to action, the Rams defeated Loras on a combination of good pitching and clutch hitting. Track Thirty-five boys answered the annual call for track candidates. During the course of the season all competed in interscholastic competition. The cindermen were hampered during the early stages of the season by bad weather and lack of indoor practice facilities. In the MVC the Rams placed sixth in the indoor meet and fourth in the outdoor affair. In the State District class AA Senior captured third. The team traveled to LaCrosse, Wiscon- sin to compete in the Peacock Relays and came away with fourth place. Dubuque placed second in the Waterloo triangular, won by West I-Iigh. The thinclads bested Campion and Loras in a meet on Senior's track under the arcs. These night meets UP and Over promoted great interest and at- ' tracted large crowds. In dual meets Loras and Free- port were defeated. The Rams fell before Rock Island and Clin- KOH. Three new school records were established. Jon Johannson broke the record in the 440 yard dash, Tom Merritt in the 180 yard low hurdles, and Mike Mercer in the football throw. Jon Johannson was the high point winner, with Mike Mercer second.
