S, . . . , .,.. 7 . , , - Z-tiff Steps Upward HE school year 1930 1931 saw many changes and improvements m the routme and currrcula of Dubuque Senror Hlgh School as well as ventures lnto new fxelds of competmon One 1nnovat1on that was perhaps apprec1ated more than any other was the fact that the tardy bell rang hve mmutes later thls year than last Several new classes were orgamzed for the benefit of those student mterested m some part1cular subjects Mrss H1ldegarde Stolteben added a course IH Advertising and Salesmanshlp to her schedule A regular class ln Debate was lnstltuted under the d1rect1on of Syl McCauley debate coach A class xn Dramatlc Productlon supervlsed by M155 Edra Walter took the place of lla Speech As a spur tow ard better scholasuc records the Natlonal Honor Socxety orlglnated the plan of presentmg a cup for a perlod of s1x weeks to the home room havmg the greatest number of students on the honor roll durmg the precedmg report perxod The Dramatrcs Department saw many changes thms year A new plan was mauguratecl that held adxantages for both the dramatxc coach and the students Those who were mterested were asked to H11 out enrollment cards at the begmnlng of the semester so that the coach could plan her work for the year Instead of the one all school play of other years three short plays one for each class gave more students a chance to show the1r abxlmes Dubuque Hxgh won first place at Iowa Clty 1n a state dramatlc productlon contest wlth a one act play, NA Mmuet U Thxs contest was sponsored for the fourth year by the Umverslty Theatre, the Extens1on DlY'1SlOH and Community Drama Commlttee of the Iowa Federauon of Women's Clubs, but thxs was the hrst time Dubuque Senlor Hlgh School had been entered Nrghr football games played an xmportant part ln this year's athletic program These games took place at the Munlcxpal Fleld As 1n prex 1ous years, each home room presented a basket at Tl18UliSglVlHg to some needv fammlv The Ya Wa Ca, asslsted by the H1 Y, had charge of the dlstrlbutlon of these baskets Some home rooms also had Chrlstmas baskets A petxtlon passed by both the House of Representatlves and the Senate admltted the H1 Y, a chapter of the local Y M C A , as a student 0I'g3I'llZ3IlOI1, thus g1VlI1g thxs club the rlght to representatron ln the Senate PAGE 9
