Kreitzer, Instructor. il-+L... + HH SENOUR ITI OTOR GOHTPHNLI st. HNTH omgznnznnn 24- HOUR SERVICE I SPEAK FOR DEMOCRACY With your permission, I shall speak of Democracy, the firm foundation of our nation. Webster's Dictionary de- fines Democracy as agovemment by the people. For some people that is the sum and substance of their knowledge - and they take all the rest for granted. But for me the very word DEMOCRACY is a powerful nine letter word that speaks for itself, letter by letter. First is the letter D. D is for defiance - willingness to resist. Our forefathers were defiant men. They resisted the unjust government that wished to enslave them, that wished to govern without representation, to tax them for a foreignor's benefit. May I too always resist if injustice threatens even one of our citizens. Second is the letter E. E means equality for all citizens. It means not whetherl am white or black, rich or poor, young or old, belong to the majority or minority group - all have equal rights under written laws. M. is the third letter. It represents the whole moral fibre that permeates a nation that recognizesGod as the source of law and order. M, therefore, stands for morality. O is the fourth letter. lt represents the opportunities that are open to all. Men are free to choose their occupa- tions, to prosper in the goods of this world, to explore the hidden treasures of science or to enter the field ofpolitics. Of course, I hardly think that I shall become president of this great nation, but Iam real proud that one of our neigh- bors, Abraham Lincoln, made it. The fifth letter, C, stands for companionship. In a democracy people have the right to organize into groups of their own choosing. They can get together freely to worship as they pleaseg They can form corporations for profitg They can form athletic leagues: Social organizations, study clubs or political organizations. All have the con- stitutional blessing of free assembly save those organizations that plot the overthrow of our government. The next letter is R, which stands for reliance. Reliance is that trust that we have in our democracy, knowing that government will do those things for us for which it was instituted. We know that in times of emergency the government will help those who are in need, as in times of great floods, or storms. Then comes the letter A . It represents the word assurance. We have definite assurance that the strong arm of law is always protecting us. We are not afraid of secret police. We know that police are for our protection. The second C in democracy means the Church. How glad we are that 168 million Americans can be true to their God, and worship as their conscience dictates. 1 believe that the church is not only a great force in preparing people fora later life, but also a great ally of democracy itselfin preparing people to live a fuller life in this world . The final letter of democracy is Y. Thisletter represents the most important ingredient ofdemocracy--namelyv YOU. Without this letter we could not have the word democracy, and without the 168 million you's we could not have this democratic nation. Do YOU perhaps say, l am not important? Remember our definition government by the people. Therefore your duty is to perpetuate this government to represent you the people. Q?- 'C x - V.-....t . Now let me respell this word: Defiance, equality, morality, oppor- r tunity, companionship, reliance, assurance, church, you. These words f spell democracy and give it meaning. For the millionswho know de- mocracy, it is truly a treasured gift, for the millions who know it not, it is truly a cherished goal. 1 ' .5 1 . -.-W A! 4-, A. This was the speech presented by Donald Patcheak, a Junior in Dubois High School, over Radio Station WITZ on Dec. 6, 1956. It was selected Donald Patcheak as the winning effort by three impartial judges and entered in the state competition.
