He was Charles Schnell, who came here from French Lick. The nine former members who were not with us in our Sophomore year were Frances Braun, Victor Cochran, joan Fromrne, Donald Hall, Richard Hemmerlein, john McGuire, Robert McGuire, Edgar Seitz and Arnos W eisheit. I Q , . . . , Clan Prophecy Woe is me Woe is me Here I have the first Saturday off in four months and look what happened to me First thing my car wouldn t start when I tried to sneak out to go fishing so I had to go and wake Henry fl-lenry is my next door neighborj and ask him to help start my car In the process we woke my wife Then the fun really began First of all I had to stay at home Second I had to fix breakfast Then my wife looked at the calendar and noticed it was April And as Spring had come late t.h1S year Oh why did Sprlng have to corne late this year of 599 I was to help clean house Giving me a break she assigned me to the attic So reluctantly I trudged up the stairs one foot after the other until I reached the top My what a nice mess of papers I 11 be able to clean them up in an hour So that means that I can sleep for at least two or three hours I had hardly dozed off to sleep my wife came up the stairs to see why everything was so quiet Well the outcome of the argument was that I was clean up the attic right away So I went to work The mess consisted mostly of old newspapers and old books So for the next two hours I looked at the funn1es I especially enjoyed Mutt and jeff Finally I drew out a rather familiar looking book Overcome by curiosity I opened it It was my old high school yearbook No wonder it looked so fa miliar Proceeding to leaf through the old book I came upon a section entitled Class Prophecies' And this is what I read I Father Time of the year 1959, while looking over the party at the new Gymnasium at Dubois High School was very much amused The class of 49 is older now but the people are still the same in their actions and features As I looked more closely in on the party I saw no one but the honorable Paul Wm Baer He was standing by the chow sampling the punch and de vouring a combination sandwich This seemed to be a very appropriate place for Paul but forgetting about his appetite he is a very well liked person He is now pastor of the church of I-laysville As I was watching Paul I saw a Mrs QI can t quite recall her last name , who used to be Miss Wilda Gehlhausen walk over to Paul They talked for a while then went over to dance It reminded me of the time when she and Paul were in the Senior Class Play They did a splendid Job Well anyway Wilda now has a Governrnent job at Washington D C and is now hav mg a three weeks vacation 12 9 I I - Q , u n . , ' , ' . . D ' ' . to It looked familiar, but yet, I had difficulty in recalling some of the faces. 1 . Y Y 1. . . Flnally I saw Geraldme Strotrnan now Hentrupj come over to get some punch She stood there for a wh1le watchmg the dancers unt1l some fellow by the name of George Neukam came up from behlnd her and tapped her on the shoulder 1 heard h1m say very d1st1nctly I-low about a dance, Gerry ju t for old tmmes sake I can stall remember at the dances at school when those two usually were dancmg partners I don t thmk they were personally 1nterested ln each other but they d1d hke to dance together and were good school day frrends Anyway, George 15 some construct1on foreman now, who is gxvlng hls fam11y a fair 11v1ng and Gerry IS a very affectionate housew1fe As I glanced toward the corner of the gyrnnasxum, I saw two couples talk mg together At a second glance I saw they were two very prosperous farmers Leroy Schnarr w1th h1s w1fe Iona Neukam and Bob Buchta wlth h1s wmfe Wilma Hall I remember when these two couples used to run around together Leroy has the b1ggest farm 1n Boone townshxp and Bob has the blggest farm down by Haysvxlle Moving my eyes to the orchestra p1t whom should I see but Charles Schnell at the p1ano That magxc touch for the p1ano keyboard had begun m school and now he 15 the second Frankie Carle I-le now has a program of h1s own over WITZ Beslde the piano stood that s1nger of the class Alva Leistner back 1n 1948 49 He and Charles were always at the p1ano slngmg and play mg dunng the noon hour at school Alva now has a Job dr1v1ng a truck for the J C Truck Lme At the front of the stage by the loud speaker I saw some funny lookxng creature w1th a false nose, and h1s pants rolled up who was puttlng on an act of some kmd I was wondermng who out of the Class of 49 could put on such a show as that After I thought It over I knew there was one person by the name of Edward Rasche 1n that class After everyone hollered yah rah Eddie I knew I was rxght He is now an excellent marksman in the Army He started h1s career by shootmg water guns mn school and he always had good txmmg, takmg am-1 when the teacher wasn t lookmg At the foot of the stage there were seated two men and their wives talking about mathematics I ll bet their wives are bored by the subject, but they act mterested When I heard the word Mathematms I knew it could be no one else but Delbert Meyer and Gene Matheis In school they were the boys that really knew then mathemaucs Delbert IS now a professor of Nathematzcs at Ind1ana Uxuversxtv I heard him say he took off at school early because he couldn t mass the party Gene is now a very prosperous store keeper in Dubois and has had great use for hzs mathematics I3 . . t . . . . U , , S . . . . . . . . . , He was singing that old favorite, Buttons and Bows which made a great hit . -, g . ' . . - , . . . , ' I . ss un . . , . ' , ' ' 0 0 Glanc1ng at the table next to thelrs I saw Eugene I-Ieeke Alexander P1eper and Robert Lee Pzeper They were all laughmg at somethmg just then and I could hardly beheve xt could be anythlng but a joke If you knew them you would beheve me Gene and Alex are two very good farmers m the surround mg terntory of Dubols In fact they are the best and blggest Robert Lee IS wcrkmg 1n the factory at jasper and IS g1v1ng h1s famxly a fme l1v1ng As I looked away from the table I saw two women dance past At f1rst glance I could see It was Evelyn Gr1eve and Mary jane Baer Both of these glrls are married now Evelyn marrled a man from Gary and now llves m the Hlghlands at Gary Mary jane became a professxonal skater and marrxed a man from West Baden Looklng toward the center of the floor I could hardly belzeve my eyes B111 Flscher was dancmg wlth Dorzs lane Math1es Know Mrs Leroy Matluesj I can remember that durmg our school days these two were pretty good fr1ends Anyway Dorxs jane IS worklng as bookkeeper m Leroy s garage and B111 F1scher has a c1ty shcker s Job at Ind1anapol1s Lookmg over the gyrnnaslurn again I dlscovered that loe Welkertl V1ctor Teder and Laverne Fnedman were absent I remember hearmg that Vmctor and joe joined the Navy I also heard that Irnogene Schnell had followed Vlctor and a gzrl from French Llck had followed joe, and that they were both now marrzed Laverne Friedman fulfilled her ambltion to become a nurse She is now a nurse at the Evansville Hospxtal and moving rxght up in rank She was probably on duty tonight or she would have been here As the party came to an end I concluded that the Class of 49 was no different from any other class The class says they have no future but when the txme comes they all end up to be worthwhmle c1t1z.ens of themr country And so Father Time turns over another leaf and What IS that a footstep I hear 'P It IS It IS my wife commg up the steps And say, I am supposed to have thxs mess cleaned up I had better act as if I were busy QEd1tor s Note The above IS Chapter 17 from the book Why Young Men Should Not Marry by the tri authors George Neukam, Wilda Gehlhausen, and Delbert Meyer Q I4 . - .
