Friday night the Spirit was abounding as the football team prepared to wamp Hanna and the volleyball squad was ready to walk over the Greybull Buffs. This was a very successful September Homecoming for DHS. Both teams gained victories! Our football squad downed Hanna 32-28, and the Lady Rams beat an undefeated Greybull team. 'i After six weeks of intensive rehearsal, the cast, crew, and director of the DHS Drama Department presented three one-act plays for the public. The high school auditorium was the setting for the November 13 and 14 performances. Breaking Up Is Hard To Do by Dennis Shee, The Who and Inside Out by Michael Seanlar were produced for full-house, receptive audiences. Following the production, the Drama Club members took a short break before beginning rehearsal for the State Theatre Festival. The group competed Dec. 4- 5 in Riverton. Scott Nishwitz, our one-man stage crew, brought home the Golden Screw Award for best stage crew! Stacey Oard was awarded Honorable Mention and Amanda Carter was chosen for the All-State Cast. According to Director, Ms. Flanagan, the Fall season was a tremendous success! MM U.N. After many mornings and evenings of preparation, six DHS students were off to Laramie to participate in the Model United Nations. The October 23 event took place at the University of Wyoming. Andy Carter, Kent Cole, Jennifer Nelson, Tom Hinerman, Scott Nishwitz and Dustin Ralston began the study of their simulations in mid September and during the next few weeks, spent more than 20 hours of their free time in preparation. Andy, Kent and Scott represented the Japanese government responding to a simulated North Korean attack against South Korea, while the interests of China were represented by Dustin, Jennifer and Tom in a simulated South African incursion into Angola. The resolutions drafted by both groups showed a solid grasp of the positions of the other nations involved, according to Mr. Zecher, as well as an ability to devise alternative strategies in response to rapidly changing conditions. 14 Though Model U.N. is not a competition, Mr. Zecher commended DHS students for a performance that was among the best of the schools participating. Members were (1) Back: Mr. Zecher (Advisor) Tom Hinerman. Dustin Ralston, Jennifer Nelson. Front: Kent Cole, Scott Nishwitz. Andy Cdrter. (2) Dustin Ralston found in his natural habitat. (4) The Spanish classes caroled through the halls. (5) Mr. Bryant and school personnel greeted the public at an Open House which followed the Christmas Program. 3 15 DHS and DMS students participated in a school-wide History Day competition. The students were required to present an entry as a part of their regular Social Studies class requirements and also as a trial-run in preparation for Regional History Day in Riverton, according to Mr. Zecher. The Dubois students won a number of awards at regionals which enabled them to compete at State History Day. DHS students going to State History Day in Laramie in May included Chad Bottcher, Kent Cole, Dustin Ralston, Stacey Oard, Kelly Marrou, Traci Thompson, Andy Carter, Rena Johnson, Kara Ruff, Kristi Leseberg, Jennifer Nelson, Tena Rice, Tom Hinerman, Scott Nishwitz, Brad Jaeckel and Jared Jeffs. Dustin Ralston received a superior second place rating for his research paper entitled Dunoir TieHacking which qualified him for a trip to Maryland in June to represent Wyoming at national competition. According to Mr. Zecher, the Middle School brought new enthusiasm to the History Day tradition this year and students are now eagerly anticipating next year's round of competitions. 2 1 So, what do you know about Genet- ics, Jared? Beter have Chad and Kent explain their project. 2. Dusty Ralston is off to National History Day in Maryland! 3. Cool dude. Brad! Bus rides make you resort to all kinds of stuff. 4. The concert was one of the best ever as students demonstrated their expertise on the various instru- ments. Reverend Lynn Wright was a guest performer, singing a song from his latest recording, Sweetwater. Rev. Wright composed the piece himself. The Middle School singers who sang for the legislature at the state capitol, provided background music for the number. The officers along with Scott Nish- witz and Brad Jaeckel. attended the Wyoming Association of Stu- dent Councils convention in Ther- mopolis. The delegation stayed at the Big Horn Basin Children's Home because of lack of motel space in Thermop. The students were commended for their ex- emplary behavior during the con- vention. Other activities sponsored by the Student Council included Home- coming and Spirit week events as well as supplying the school Christmas tree. We try to devise ways to encourage and ac- knowledge those who excel scholastically. We have started the academic letter award and we put signs on lockers of all those on the Honor Roll. We are currently trying to get a plaque for presi- dents of the Student Council and N.H.S. and a traveling banner to hang in the hall listing the most students from any one class on the Honor Roll every quarter. — Mrs. Tolar i 1 O K. Hoiioit £ocieft ScJutlaxiLip LuJeulif CLawetfK Qvuite, 29 Amici Staff Compiling the history of a school year is an awesome task! Twelve students (most first-time staffers) plus one relatively inexperienced advisor accepted the chal- lenge and gave many before and after school hours to produce an annual which will serve as a written and pictorial account of 1987-88. The staff sold over $3,000 worth of advertising, sold the book itself, and maintained two pop machines to entirely finance the publication. Instruction gained at the WHSAA Journalism Workshop in Evanston during October was valuable, teaching us techniques on layout, copy, and photography. Our theme, cover design, and contents were chosen after much brainstorming in the fall. January became very hectic as the first deadline approached ... that hec- tic pace lasted through our final deadline following graduation. So, here we go again with YOUR ANNUAL, a book which taught us a lot and provided many fun-filled, exhausting, sometimes frustrating, but often reward- ing hours. -'88 RAM Staff Mrs. Ballinger, Advisor Stacey Oard, Editor Connie Kurasz Jennifer Nelson Kristi Leseberg-Rose Traci Thompson Amanda Carter Kelly Marrou Kara Ruff Andy Carter Lance McBride Scott Nishwitz Rena Johnson 30 Raui-Pt: aqei Six students comprise the Journalism staff which meets as a class daily. The paper has made lots of progress since last fall. At the WHS A A convention in Evanston in October, the RAM-Pages earned a Bronze Merit Award and a special citation for being self-supporting. We have a new format due to our being printed and distributed with the local town newspaper, the Dubois Frontier. The students still do the lay-out, but in the Frontier's office. Students take pictures and the Frontier staff develops them. Our circulation has increased from about 200 to over 500. -Ms. Flanagan 1 Mrs Ballinger and Ms Flanagan join their 9 annual staff members and 3 journalism students during the WHSAA Convention in Evanston in October 2 Stacey relaxes between workshops Is it soft enough for you? 3 Journalism class (Back) Jared Jeffs, Ole Johnson, Karl Lehmann (Front) Bonnie Bowles. Fund raisers this year included the showing of a 3-D movie and some conces- sions. Thanks to D-Club funds, a television was installed in the Ram activity bus. According to the coaches, the T.V. enables a more comfortable trip plus gives the teams the opportunity to learn by viewing game tapes. Athletics are important to the lives of DHS students and mem- bers of the D-Club have worked hard to earn their membership. Attendance at the meetings was high and much input was received from underclassmen. This strong showing was encouraging and is an indication S.A.D.D. will continue to be a strong organization at Dubois High School. A S.A.D.D. rally featuring Tex Yearout, increased the awareness of the purposes of S.A.D.D. The assembly was attended by all Middle and High School students. The post prom Casino night was well attended. A total of $1,622 in cash and prizes was donated. Students had a great time thanks to the S.A.D.D. organization and the generous townspeople. The progress that was made and the tradi- tion that was started by these boys will carry on to future Ram football teams. The '87 team was led by three seniors who will be difficult to replace and is- sues a challenge to the under classmen to not only fill these positions, but to emerge as positive team leaders. The future of Ram football looks bright, providing the players are willing to dedicate themselves to serious off-season work and preparation. - Coach Mees 8 17 Coackk CotMtK The season began in Dubois with an 8-team tournament. The Lady Rams took 3rd. Only 12 of the 14 players had started on varsity be- fore. yet the group worked dili- gently to perfect skills and adjust- ed well to a new coaching staff. A 6-8 record ended the varsity conference season with the high- light being a 15-13, 10-15, 15-11 Homecoming win over Greybull! A 13-1 record was earned by the JV team - the best in the confer- ence! Coodtk CciMJVl Despite a two-win season, Dubois basketball saw a sea- son filled with excitement and overall improvement. The Rams remained competitive all season and challenged the opponents each night, and gained respect as the season progressed. We will miss our three seniors: Kent Cole, Jay Wells, and Ed Winters; however, the '87-'88 Rams displayed several talented underclassmen that will hopefully bring a real basketball tradition to DHS. The 87-88 Rams were a pleasure to coach. I wish the seniors luck in their future endeavors and challenge oth- ers to bring a championship to D.H.S. - Coach Mees s 41 Coackk Cemex The girls basketball team played 16 games; 14 conference and two non-conference. The team record was 3-11 conference and 4-12 overall. We entered the regional tournament tied with the 6th seed, and were eliminated in two games. Many found the competition tough and learned that hard work in practice is essential for success. The team developed and kept a posi- tive attitude throughout the year. Two of the nine wrestlers placed at the Re- gional Tournament and advanced to State. Jared Jeffs placed first at Regionals and fourth at State. Jeremy Britton was first at Regionals and third at State. The future years of Dubois Rams Wres- tling look bright because of those who are willing to dedicate themselves to the sport. -Coach Ballinger 44 45 Coadtk Ceum The 1988 Track Season was a season filled with improvement. Several athletes reached person- al bests and set several new school records. Tena Rice finished her career with two new school records in the 100 and 300 meter hurdle races. Tom Hinerman broke the 300 me- ter hurdle record and Kent Cole broke the 100 meter record. The '88 RAM was designed by the DHS Annual staff under the direction of our advisor, Mrs. Bal- linger. Josten's Printing and Publishing Company published our book. Special thanks go to Mr. Tolar and Mr. Christensen for assisting us with our cover art. We also thank the photography class. Ram Pages staff, Dubois Frontier, Jem Photography, Stanley Studio, and Lehman Studio for supplying some negatives and pictures. Over $3,000 was earned through ad sales and we appreciate the many advertisers who supported our school to make this publication pos- sible. Gathering pictures, typing copy, laying out pages, selling ads, printing pictures, and all other facets of putting the '88 RAM together were done outside the regular school day. The cooperation of activity sponsors, all students, parents, and school personnel helped make this book a treasured keepsake. Thank you all for your support! We hope you enjoy the book! —Stacey, Jennifer, Connie, Lance, Kristi, Rena, Kara, Andy, Scott, Traci, Kelly, Amanda SUNDOWNER TAXIDERMY Life Time Guarantee On All Work W W jr Award Winning Mounts y wf Fast, Reliable Service 104 E.
