Cline The 1976 yearbook is dedicated with loving respect and admiration to Ervin Cline, who gives much more to us than he ever asks in return. He gives not only of his time; he can be found working Saturdays, Sundays, and until after mid- night many nights. Often he spends his own money on equipment, etc., for his classes. He also gives of himself to each and every student he teaches. Each person is an in- dividual to Dr. Cline, and he treats them as such. Ervin Cline grew up in Colorado, and after a stint in the service, he returned there to go to college. He has taught young people all the way from junior college through high school and junior high. He is always willing to try something new and at the present time he is working with an elementary stu- dent. The Science program that he and Mr. Manley have developed for our school is unique and it is gaining statewide recognition. Some of the programs he has in- itiated are Aeronautics, Behavior Biology, Oceanography, and Meteorology. The Science room has taken on a new look since the advent of Dr. Cline. Plants, animals, and science paraphernalia fill the room and receive Dr. Cline's special tender loving care. He also finds time to sponsor extracurricular activities. He is the Senior class sponsor and has also sponsored class tournaments in the school. I I hope that every student in the Dubois School can say along with me, It is a privilege to know Ervin Cline.” I know that I am proud to be his friend. Mervin Lindsey - Principal Administration First, I should like to heartily congratulate the sponsor and the staff for their dedication and their many hours of labor in the production of this record of the 1975-76 school year. Too often many of us do not consider the difficulties which are en- countered by the members of the annual staff in creating a pic- torial history of the school year. Second, I wish the best of everything to the class of 1976. May each of you achieve your own personal goal. Third, I wish to thank each and every pupil, each and every staff member, each and every board member and each and every parent for his or her contribution in making this another memorable year. Superintendent Board Of Trustees Cynthia Boyhan. Walter Bell, Jr.. Roberta Milton, Leslie Stagner. Bob Grubb. John Story. “Stand Your Ground . . . If They Mean to Have a War, Let It Begin Here. ” Capt. John Parker 1 Capt. John Parker uttered those words as the colonial militia under his command prepared to meet the British troops at Lexington. Those works and the painting—Spirit of '76—exemplify the dedication and determination of the American patriots in their fight for independence. The colonies had organized to express their grievances in an effort to resolve the differences within the framework of the Empire. Several of the colonial legislatures had instructed their delegates to the Con- tinental Congress in Philadelphia to oppose any move toward in- dependence. The movement for independence was gaining strength and following the publication of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, which argued for colonial sovereignty, a resolution was adopted and a committee of five appointed to draft a declaration of independence. 2 General Washington, who had been appointed commander-in-chief of American forces by the Second Continental Congress, was a brilliant military strategist. It was his decision to take his Continentals across the Delaware River on Christmas night which resulted in the first ma- jor colonial victory. That victory at Trenton over Hessian mercenaries gave the ragged army renewed vigor. Supported chiefly through the printing of Continental currency, the colonial army also went through the personal fortunes of many American patriots—among them Washington. Jefferson. Richard Henry Lee and John Adams. These fortunes were donated to the cause of liberty—a cause supported by about one-third of the American population which was near 2,000,000. Another one-third remained loyal to the English crown and the remainder were apathetic. Despite many defeats, the colonies managed to keep an army in the field as a symbol of American resistance, to guarantee a negotiated rather than dictated peace. 3 “ . . Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!” Patrick Henry 3 Following the victory at Yorktown. Washington refused the offer of his troops to become king and returned to Philadelphia to aid with the establishment of a permanent government for the new republic—a loose alliance of sovereign states held together by the Articles of Confederation. An envoy composed of Benjamin Franklin. John Adams and John Jay was sent to negotiate with the British. It was not until 1783 that the peace agreement, known as the Treaty of Paris, was signed, guaranteeing the sovereignty of the United States of America. The Articles of Confederation, despite many weaknesses, served to un- ify the states until 1787 when a special convention was held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia to revise them. The meeting was attended by fifty-five of the most-prominent men of the day. Twenty- nine of the delegates representing a majority of the states met on May 25 and decided to draft an entirely new constitution rather than am- mend the Articles of Confederation. The meeting then became known as the Constitutional Convention. 4 The men who assembled for the Constitutional Convention were an illustrious group with nearly every delegate a person of prominence in his home state. A large majority favored a strong central government. After four months of debate, on September 17, 1787, the new constitu- tion was completed. In a little more than four months, six states had ratified the new constitution. Despite the good beginning, the fight for ratification was bitter and it was not until September 13, 1788, that the necessary two-thirds majority of the states had approved the docu- ment and Congress could call for states to choose their electors and congressmen. Several of the statos had ratified the constitution with the provision that it would be amended. Thus, as one of its first official acts under the new constitution, the Congress added the first ten amendments known as the Bill of Rights. Washington was un- animously elected President and a new nation was launched on a course of democracy. TOP ROW: Alyce Bell. First Grade; Ervin. Cline. Science; R. J. Kost, Math; William Eastman. Kost Coach Joe Fiedler The Dubois High School football team record this year does not tell the true story of our team. We had thirteen players; the majority of which were freshmen and sophomores with no experience and very little size. But our players developed into winners. They worked hard in practices (the first Dubois team to go through double practices) and also played very hard in every game. We were behind in every game, but we never quit and always played with great PRIDE. The Dubois RAMS are a team to be proud of, and they will be a Championship team in the future. These were overhand serves, dives and rolls. They worked many hours on offense patterns and now have the skills to build a strong team. Regionals surprised us—as our losses were very narrow losses. Dubois Rams Girls Basketball The first year of coaching at Dubois High School was not only a pleasure but a pleasant experience. We worked hard and strived for one goal—to achieve the championship of District and State. Winning 8 and losing 8 in the season produced the attitude it would take to attain the goal. Unfortunately, we met some good teams and received Fourth Place in District. Next year looks and hopes to be a promising one for the Girls Ram’s of Dubois High School. —Coach Kost Recognition DeeDee Atchley ...................................High Season Scorer All Tournament Team Cindy Stevens Jodi Albright . We learned. At no time did student support or enthusiasm dwindle. With a couple of excep- tions, team spirit and zeal remained high. Of- ficials and opposing coaches remarked about the courtesy and sportsmanship displayed by a team which was consistently losing. Now we must learn to win, to get back on the winning bracket, with the same poise and graciousness we displayed in losing in the past.
