'44 4- il U They gaye a play, 'twas a fearful thing: lint it certainly did make old Dublin ring. Ilut they got by 'twas sufficient, And the teachers told them they were efficient. lint now they are Seniors, Look out below , What they hayen't learned yet isn't to know. They certainly make a good example, For on the Freshmen now they trample. The teachers say they are a good class 1Although sometimes they are green as grassl. lint then the faculty likes to flatter, And the Seniorswwell, it doesn't matter. Now it is time this eulogy ended, Or else my reader will be quite winded. As the poet said: 'Tis doneg 'tis finished , And I am sure your patience is quite diminished ln the future let us hope, dear reader, That our class will always he called the leader. -I , .Swv si -' ce Hass Will D10 4 If. Located on High School and Cam- den Street, I found a very interesting' colony whose aetions I determined to note. This eolony was eomposed of eleyen families which varied in size and numbers, as well as other eliaraeteristics. As years passed on the ehildren of eaeh family grew to maturity. and left their home, wliieh was Dublin High School. They left behind them as marks of their ambition yarious things which they accomplished during their residence 'in D. H. S. Many of the children of the different families have gone out into the world, and through their aehieyements have cast rays of glory upon their mother. The most remarkable of these families seemed to be the youngest. It was possibly the largest of the eleyen, and each member so unusual in his individuality that I think best to give you the p.rsuinneI of the elass of 1921, as they first began their niareh oyer the rugged way to an education. CLASS IloLI. 15110. Iiillie BIef'ampbelI, Paul Prim, Jim Iiritton. Paul Smith, Ifraneis t arpenter. lloy Ilayis, Early Sparks, Willie Hay Liles, Leyita Varter, Eudora .Iac-Iison, Ileulah White, Lela Mae Leatherwood. Gladys llarrod, Loraine Flemming, Ileulah Morgan. Cliffa .lean Linn, Hattie Isluth Christie, Gladys Thomas and Louise Iidmonds. The neighbors were especially interested in this family, and watched with particular interest the growth and development of it. After haying passed through the many trials and tortures of exams. for seyen years, during which time another building was added, they began their eareer in High School. Ordinarily, first year residents in High School are not paid mueh attention. but this family was so thrifty that eyen the upper elass aristoerats taristoerats by having been there Iongeri were forced to sit up and take notice. Some had weakened and fall: n by the wayside, so this family now eon- sisted of the following members: Vorrinne Oyers, Veeilia Fast. Estelle Gibbs, La Hue Keith. I-luth tlillireath. Annie Lois Iflasley, Herthold Daley. -losie llell Smith, Gladys Ilarrod. Leland Lowe, Ilenery Smith, Thomas Harris, George C'hristie, Ilufus Iligginbotliam, tlpal Sparkes, Herndon Mabry, Iluby Frump, Willie Yirdell, Ilenton Moore. Paul Prim, Early Sparks, Ollis Walden. Ida Hazel Atlee, May Aderhold and Louise Edmonds. I will attempt to tell what some who came part of the way have done: Herndon Mabry remained rx part of this family until the tenth grade, when she sought higher quarters and went to Fort Worth. I don't know whether it was George Christie's ambition to get more money or that he had so much already that he had to get in a bank to take Care of it, but. at any rate he became a banker. The class of '22 liked Rufus Higginhotham so well that this particular family finally consented for them to adopt him and they were so proud of him that they made him president of their household. Uerthold Daley, with her heart sct on being a movie star, decided she could perform better in t'alifornia. Fate was against them, for ill health decreed that Thelma McLaughlin should not enlioy being one of our family, but the members remember her still and are glad she is almost now well. La Hue Keith was fatally wounded by Dan Cupid, and they had to give her up to become the wife of our honored football coach, Mr, VV. P. Hal- mark, Jr. Annie Lois Easley was having such a good time that she refused to leave the family. The family announced the loss of Mable Howell, who moved away and has since married. Gladys Harrod liked High School so well that she decided to stay another year. The family hated to give Paul Prim up, but he moved to Mineral VVells. The angel of death cast her shadows of sorrow over the family whin She took Forinne Overs away in August, 1920. Cecilia East and Estelle Gibbs become so absorbed in trying to intro- duce Society into High School, that they were not aware that it was mov- in! time for this family. Erskine Williams. better know as Erkie, was as bright as his hair, but his father being a preacher, he was forced to divorce himself from his family, who were reluctant to see him go. -X ... Cer. Faculty Conunclrums by the Juniors I The first is a fair lady's name Sung by a poet of fortune and fame- A golden apple, a long, bloody strife- Strange way indeed to win a wife. The second adorns the pine tree high in the air, The spreading chestnut tree with cooling shade and rare A dead language, you say? Not much: she speaks it and writes it each day. A character so solid and sound That it makes a jolly good sport all around. Il I know a lady who can smile And hear her lessons all the while, And really I think it quite clever That sunbeams and archives go so well together. And then it's fascinating too To have a teacher who is never sad or blue. And it's no wonder we can crave To read of kings and queens and knights and warriors brave Such is the delightful lot We are always Johnny on the spot. Her name suggests adventure, pluck and grit And Daniel Boone immortalized it. kb 5 . gm, ., 1-t. if .,. . '. .ff I, sm f tw. And no doctor or lawyer or merchant or chief Shall lure him away without being a thief. You may talk of poetry, music or art, But Science got him, and he knows it by heart. The first is the name of a prophet, a sage, saer. Who tells us of storms and gales - And when and what to fear. Letters four of the last name is what we wish to be called Whether at home, at school or abroad in stately halls. The last four with the first divested Form the name of an insect much detested. IV Gentle in manner, calm and serene, Patiently she labors to instill a gleamg Softest glances and raven hair, Oft have I seen a red geranium there. When rolkd in splendid gowns of somber hue Where could there be found a truer blue? The first name begins with an interliection And ends in a sign of fatigue. Two syllables in the second-one the name of a girl. The other an invention very much in need. XF I eouldn't find a rhyme to suit her name, So put it down as just her game To keep us guessing with all the rest Of what her dreams, and what she thinks of life at best: And then we speak to her in mother tongue so dear, She warbles high Vastilian in at-cents swtet and clear. But when the work is o'er and the lessons done She hikes to the goals for sport and fun. And this we know, if indeed she were not there How sadly we should miss her joy and cheer. Z For a time there seemed rough sailing, but we poured over our Algebra and wrestled with our Latin and Science till the wee sma' hours, winning raonfe degree of praise from our teachers as good beginners. The work was hard, but we did not forget occasional pleasures. A spe- cial one was a carnival which we, with the help of the Sophs, gave com- plimentary to the Juniors and Seniors. Cowboys mingled with Colonial dames: dark-eyed sentritas consulted the fortune-tellirs: and street ven- dors went around calling their wares. Such was the jolly crowd that par- took freely of red lemonade throughout the evening. The crowning event of this year was Armistice Day. At eleven o'clock we joined the ward school and marched through the city, feeling glad in our hearts that a great war had closed. The shadow that clouded our high school career had passed. With the beginning of our Soph. year came Bliss Tutwiler, with all her entrgy and enterprise for sports, and under her direction a basketball team was organized, with lflva Thurman as captain. We found that Miss Tutwiler was not only interested in sports, but in History and Spanish as well. n A number ol' our class had dropped out, and a few new ones had come in, but it could be told that we were the same crowd. Our first game was with our old opponent, Stephenville High School. We wert beaten by a high margin, but the team work displayed by our men gave us great encouragement for the coming games, Our next game was with Hico, the score being 13-0 in their favor, our men showing decided improvement over the preceding game. Our next two games were with Gorman High, with scores of 13-6 and 1-1-O in our favor. On Thanks ivino' day we ilaved our last game, at Breckenridge. G K . IT' It resulted in a defeat for our team. This was due in part to the absence of our coach, Mr. Hallmark, whose presence seemed to have magic charms on the players, and to the fact that two of our best players were unable to participate in the game. In spite of several defeats, our boys deserved much credit for their de- termination in bu'ilding a real football team for D. H. S. Theirs has the distinction of being the first team to continue playing until Thanksgiving. With the splendid material left from this year ours will be a winning team next year. Orien T. Evans .. At the front sit the Freshies, the freshest ot' all, And ot' course they are not very wise: But after a while they come out straight and tall And give us a shocking surprise. Behind them the Sophomores, a wiser class, But no more wise than fools at best, Making numerous blunders and falls, Vnconscious they are worse than the rest. Next, the Juniors sit plat-idly in their place, A band ot' studious boys and girls. Doing their best to win in the race That will bring them much -icy. Last, not least in importance, but in size, The Seniors sit hoping May will soon come and pass by For then their High School work will be over And the books laid aside without a sigh. ln the study hall each pupil strives to do his best They sit side by side each day and Ot' each one's destiny no one can guess.
