Innovation — Key Word Of 69 Speech-Drama Program Repetition is often good, but at times it destroys originality and creativity. When this occurs, INNOVATION is needed. INNOVATION has been a key word used in the vernacular of this year’s speech and drama program at D.H.S. Pantomines, afterdinner speech banquets, heckling speeches, debates, play production and one-act plays have added to the versatility sought in this phase of the English curriculum. Future expansion of the speech and drama curriculum is a desired outcome as the speech and drama department ardently strives for INNOVATION. ! i Phyllis Flynn and Vanessa Brown learn that speech class has outside benefits such as speech banquets. Left with only one district starter to defend the “New River title”, prospects for another fine season appeared extremely discouraging for the Duke football team, but with the leadership of a handful of seniors (8), the Dukes proved that they would be hard to embarrass. By mid-season, the Dukes began to form into a good football team reaching their peak when they upset undefeated Wytheville. With many talented underclassmen on the squad, the Dukes view the future with optimism. The squad was a young and inexperienced club but had high hopes and a good fighting spirit. The team had only two returning senior lettermen, Manious Black and Fred Stanley. Other non-lettermen seniors were Jack Hall, Richard Lewis, and Cecil Wolford. In addition to the above, this year’s team consists of juniors Bobby Hanks, Mike Armbrister, Mike Lee, Elroy Eaves, Preston Beamer, sophomores Richard Austin, Kim Repass, Stuart Kelly, and freshman, Nicky Carden who broke into the squad as a starter. Height and inexperience were the two biggest problems facing the team. The team posted two wins and three loses going into the Christmas holidays and prospects look good for the team making the tournament this year. Varsity Basketball 1968-69 First row — B. Hanks, N. Most of the boys had been playing baseball for three straight years and had been working toward that goal. The team was able to reach this plateau because of hard work and a very good attitude toward all individuals connected with the team. To show the team’s spirit, an example of their playing may be in order. Early in the season they were beaten by C’burg by a score of 5-4. When they met C’burg later in the season it was no contest. Dublin beat C’burg in the second encounter by a score of 9-1. In the New River District tournament, Dublin defeated Hillsville. Dublin then defeated Radford for the District Crown by a score of 8-3 on the Bobcats’ home field. Both tournament wins were played away from home, but the Dukes like all good teams were able to defeat the opponents on their home field. District Champs In 1968 158 First Row - J. Whitlock, H.
