(Continued on page 144) Senior Class Prophecy It was 1992, 30 years since the Class of ' 62 left Dublin High School, and a letter from Ed Simpson, now a noted author, was calling me back for a grand reunion with my classmates. I boarded a rocket and shortly landed at the Vaughn Naval Airport at Dublin, which was named for Steve Vaughn, now an Admiral in the Navy. I noticed that Dublin had grown quite a bit sincel left, and I decided that I would tour Dublin before going to the reunion. Downtown, the first building I noticed was the Western Auto, but owner and manager, Ronnie Alexander, had already left for the reunion. Next door, the huge building of the Dublin Daily housed several offices and I decided to in- vestigate those. The first floor housed the news- paper offices and office of the editor, who I later found out was Carole Jo Chandler. The next floor had doctors’ offices and on the doors were names as Dr. Alfred Anderson Ratcliffe (out of which the receptionist, Gaynell Morris, was carrying a patient). Dr. Roswell Cox, Dr. Michael Z. Johns- ton, and Dr. C. Leon Morris. On the next floor, I saw Dan Wilburn, C.P. A.; Doug McGhee, Plumb- ing; Sam Graham, Contractor; Betty Estes, Con- tractor; and the law firm of Allison, Allison, McDonald and Richardson, which was composed of Dale Allison, Carolyn Allison, Jackie Mc- Donald, and Phil Richardson. On the way out of the building, I saw Howard Jennings, editor of the Southwest Times, go storm- ing into the office of Carole Chandler. While I was waiting around to see Howard, I decided to takeatourofthenewspaper office, and I was very glad that I did because at the main press I noticed Arnold Duncan, Haven McCoy, Eric Litteral, and Kenneth Reed trying to pull David Roope from the press. I learned later he leaned over to correct a misspelled word and shop manager, Billy Riddle, accidentally turned the press on. At the desks, I saw such names as David Chumbley and William Boyd, Sports Writers; Charlotte Phipps and Brenda Gilbert, Fashion Editors; Patricia Hylton, Lovelorn Editor; Ava Torrence, Political Writer; C. L. Kin- cer. Cartoon Editor; Billy Chinault, Farm News Editor; Merrill Sifford and Jimmy Coleman, Busi- ness Managers; and Betty Hubble, Advertising Manager. I stepped outside into the sunlight just in time to see Policeman Kay Campbell pull motorcyclist, CarlDeHart, who was doing 160 through the mid- dle of town. Housewives Shirley Cain, Clara Chrisley, Lois Akers, Scarlett Furrow, and Iris Rupe were rushing into Celia Caldwell ' s beauty shop to get their hair done at the special low price offered on homecoming day. I noticed Dublin now had a night club with the name Norman ' s on the billboard and I found out later that it was Norman Morris ' s, owner and manager. In lights, I saw that another familiar person, Stanley Lawson, now a famous comic, was ap- pearing at Norman ' s. Next door was the Martin Bus Service and owner, Roger Martin, was fussing at John Jackson for being late while Olen Smythers, James Webb, Dell Hall, and Luther Henley took lessons in driving the new jet bus from salesman, Franklin Mills. I noticed the clock at the Trussler Bank, (named for President, Brenda Trussler) that it was almost time for the reunion to begin, and I had not eaten yet. I rushed into Ma McCoy ' s diner meeting Myrtle McCoy, owner, at the front door in a somewhat undignified position of setting the clock above the door while standing on a chair. After we both got up with the help of Elaine Quesenberrv and Barbara French, who were wait- resses, I apologized to Miss McCoy and then went on to order. I found myself sitting beside David Addington who looked rather discouraged because I found out laterhis newest record sold only three copies. Hehad bought two and his mother had bought one to play in the bowling alley. I tried to cheer him up but finding I was unsuccessful, I left and started on the way to Dublin High School. On the way up Giles Avenue, I passed the Dublin Sports Arena and noticed several race car drivers that I knew- -Ronnie Alley in his Ford, David Hancock in his Pontiac, Sonny Smith, and Johnny Butler. Ernest Nester drove the pace- setting oldsmobile, and Martha Hamblin, a Nash Rambler. I also noticed Janice Mutter trying to get her Chevrolet to the pits because of transmission trouble. I stopped off at the Dublin Model School to find the director, Linda Hash; Lauraetta McCraw, Peggy McCraw, Laura Jane Midkiff, and Nita Moore modeling sportswear for a few tired house- wives. I recognized a few as Patricia Otey, Linda Hodge, Frances Killen, Joyce Arnold, Bonnie Lovern, Mary Warden and Nita Craig. Before going to the school, I decided to go look at the football stadium and there I found coach Bill Bolling trying to get his Duke team ready to meet their biggest rival Friday night. Fathers Roy Davis, Bobby Harkrader, Marvin Harler, Ranny O ' Dell, Howard Stephens, and Jerry Tickle were over in the corner of the field watching their sons while Eddie Wayne was trying to revive his son from a block by Coach Bolling. I went on up to the school and met the rest ofthe coaching staff calling Dr. Sherian Lancaster on the office phone. Basketball Coach, Danny Davis, was telling Baseball Coach, Bobby Dicker- son, that Wrestling Coach, Jerry Tucker, was ex- Senior Class Prophecy aggerating when he said that Gordon Reams ' son had thrown Woodson Spraker out the gym window in a judo exhibition by mistake. I left the locker room, going to the gym and met Mary Catherine Farris, Girls’ Basketball Coach, talking to Teresa Whittaker about her daughter being too short to play basketball since she was only 6 1 . I went upstairs to find a girls’ basketball game in action. Proud mothers watching their daughters play were Jayne Farmer, Judy Harkrader. Phyllis Linkous, Ramona Paris, PeggyTickle, and Lois Nester. Shirley Goforth was trying to instruct her new cheerleaders to jump and mothers Betty Tickle, Susan Mathena, Julia Meredith, and Dixie Lawson were proudly watching their daughters giggle when Shirley missed a jump and landed in a rather pre- carious position on the gym floor. I decided to go down to the office and met the Principal, Tom Graham, rushing out of the office to put out a fire in the Teachers ' lounge. I found a few familiar faces at the desks in the office. Linda Boothe was stuffing the teacher’s mailboxes while Darlene Nicewander was trying to separate the mail and Wanda Quesenberry was trying to get the electric typewriter to stop making mistakes. I heard some commotion in the hall and stepped out to find Imogene Haines fussing at Merijoyce Collins for giving her son an F in 9th grade science. Other members of the science department were watching and dreading the time Imogene’s son would be in their classes. Ruth Ann Sloop, Physics teacher; C. W. Dulaney, Chemistry teacher; and Edith Viers, Biology teacher were trying to figure a way to get Merijoyce off the hook. The other teachers were coming in now, and I noticed Trula Kelly carrying a small brief- case into 101 to meet her Junior English class. Patsy Roope was at the desk in 102 trying to get her demonstration slide rule to slide. I heard a commotion from the band room and turned the corner just in time to see Band Director, Mary Kate Greene, throw Chorus Director, Patsy Mc- Peak, out for tyring to sing The Hallelujah Chorus while the band played Maple Leaves Forever . I found that wasn’t the end of the excitement in the band room as I saw Walter Dobyns pull the last of his gray hair while Bobby Herndon, trombone player, • and Avria Hall, trumpeter, tried to pull Larry Hash’s fingers from the bass fiddle strings after they slipped when he went to sleep in the middle of Walter’s solo. I stepped out in the hall and met Ellen Alli- son, Spanish teacher, and James Dunnigan, Gov- ernment teacher, arguing about which country had the best government. James was protesting that a bull fight didn’t seem very democratic to him and Ellen said it was simpler than going through Congress. I went upstairs and saw Janice Eller trying to tell her class how to make an oo and all the brilliant shorthand students just laughed every time she said it. I saw Bonnie French teaching a Senior English class that it wasn’t polite to say Billy Shakes- peare and Wanda Jones teaching her Home Ec. students to make beds. Other teachers were Lotus Phillips, Judy Southern, Rochelle Warden, Sandra Turner, and Helen Quesenberry. They all seemed to be trying to prove a point to the young boneheads , as I heard Sandra put it. At first I couldn’t believe it when I saw Bill Chrisley sitting in a class, but upon further ob- servation! found that he wasn’t a teacher but still a student and along with him was Joyce Bratton. I went outside and John MacLeod alrnost ran over me as he went down the road doing roadwork for a track meet. John, I understand, is a track star now because of the training he received running from a certain girl in high school. And, by the way, Carolyn Wheeler is a professional trainer of trackmen now. Near the bandroom entrance, Martha Wilson was drilling her new team of Dukettes, and Betty Boothe, Brenda McCam bridge, Elizabeth Bowman, and Nancy Ann Phillips were watching their daughters drop their batons just like their instruc- tor. I was stunned at first to see movie equipment and cameramen running around on the front lawn but upon approaching Producer Martha Jane Mc- MulUn, I found they were filming Mrs. B. Finishes High School , staring Jeanette Hill. I also found out that Miss McMullins ' company had made a musical starring Sandra Moran. I talked to Production Engineer Charlotte Watson and Susie Tickle, Prompter, on the way in to join my classmates of the Class of ' 62, but something told me I wasn ' t going to be surprised about anyone’s profession. Curtis Lawson 1 1 ' The Class of ' 62 presented the annualJunior-Seniorbanquet in honor of the seniors in May, 1961.
