To us who were members of the student body and faculty, this first year was a challenge. Our challenge was this — First to establish for our school a reputation, one of which our community might be proud and one to which future school students might aspire; to lay a foundation upon which they might build, and to take an appre- ciable advantage of the many opportunities that our new situation of- fered. It is the purpose of this yearbook to depict in spirit and pictures the beautiful new building, of which we are so proud ; the student body, and its activities; and to remind the students of the happy hours together during this first year at the new Dublin High School. DEDICATION On behalf of the student body the staff wishes to dedicate the 1954 edition of Maple Leaves to Mr. Fred Reynolds, our principal. Mr. Rey- nolds has been a real friend to each of us, and has won our affection and confidence during the year. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for his genuine interest, his encouragement, his leadership, and his inspiration. We feel that Mr. Reynolds has had a large part in pro- viding many fine opportunities and in making possible a better quality of education. The 1953-54 school year has been a new beginning and also a landmark year in that we have expanded our horizons and are on our way to greater achievements. We were zooming along in our rocket ship when we look- ed down and saw earth, and Dublin High School. Seeing our old home of many good times, we began thinking of our classmates and what they were doing now. As we looked closer we saw a roaring crowd at a foot- ball game, and who should be playing on the All-American team but Dick Morgan, John Donnelly, Bill Moore, Bill Turman, “Rebels” Nester, and Reggie Hawley. Looking closely at the cheerleaders we saw Bobbie Keis- ter yelling with her old spirit. Our glances wandered to the crowd where we saw Betty Huddleston, Patsy Wilson, Cecille Covey, Joyce Bond, Ma- rie Butts, Mildred O’Dell, and Iva Gay Lyons — all enjoying hot dogs and “big orange drinks.” Seeing the Empire State Building we realized that we were now over New York City. At a toy shop on Fifth Avenue we saw Jim Baker buy- ing an electric train for Jim, Jr., from a very patient salesgirl, Janet Mor- ris. With the use of our super-sonic telescope we were able to see David Sheffey painting life-sized portraits of his lovely models, Ina Mae Hyl- ton, Jean McNeil, and Lois Tickle. Looking through the window of a large office building we recognized Katherine Cooper, Christine Galli- more, Novella Harler, Joan Hudson, and Doris Sifford taking dictation from their big executive bosses. By closer view we saw that these bosses were Clyde Suavely, John Phillips, Marshall Dagenhart, and James Thorn- ton. The president of this organization, The Jetmobile Co., Inc., was Tommy Lawton. His private secretary was Shirley Dodson who was getting 120 words a minute in shorthand! In this same building was Carolyn Cooke, editor of the “Atomic Streak,” who was getting the latest edition to the press. On her staff were Lucille Cox, as news editor, with Donna French and Jean Foutz as society editors. Roving reporters were Danny Booth and Carl Allison who always had “noses for news.” r Passing by the Futurama Theater we saw the names of Patty Looney and Lowell Hayes who are the stars of the current Broadway hit, “North Atlantic.” As we looked at the billboard we saw that another one of our old classmates, Sherwin Holt, will be appearing soon with the Firestone Orchestra (now conducted by our old friend Gary Tolbert). The pianist for this production was Emma Pearl Smith. As we looked away from the billboard we saw a long, red Jetmobile convertible drive up and Ronny Simpson, the newest singing rage among the bobby-soxers, hopped out to meet his eager fans. Tired of the bright glitter and milLng crowds we looked back again at Dublin High. Peeping into the office of the principal we were aston- ished to see Bill Rogerson, with his feet on the desk and puffing on a king-size cigar, talking over the coming election for the president of the U. S. with head coach Herbert King. (Or is it Hubert?) On the lapel of Mr. Rogerson’s coat was a pin which said, “Don’t Be Silly, Vote For Lil- ly.” Yes, Margaret is at it again. Her worthy opponent is Lynwood Matherly. Peering into 107 we saw in Mrs. Meadow’s place, Betty Mc- Craw teaching “Macbeth” to Benny Compton, Donald Dalton, and Mon- roe McMillian. In the home economics department we found Elsie Wheel- ing, Betty Nicewander, and Shirley Woodyard discussing a formal wed- ding with a class of wide-eyed eighth graders. In the library we found the head librarian, Frances Gordon, instructing her assistants, Eleanor — 32 — CLASS PROPHECY Jamison, Emily Semones, Virginia Scott, Jean Duncan, and Ann Nes- ter. Looking into the gym we saw a bunch of hot and tired girls gath- ered around their instructors, Inez Tolbert and Mary Jane Cooper, who were just about to announce the new girls basketball team. Let’s see if we recognize any of them . . . yes, there’s Joyce Dalton, Betty Mae Gleas- on, Irene McCambridge, and Ruby Palmer. Mildred Bolt is delighted to find that she is again head scorekeeper. Smelling a tempting meal, we looked into the lunch room. We found Garnie Dishon and Donald Sumner, who were agriculture teachers, dis- cussing the dry weather with Hubert King. (Or is it Herbert?) who is teaching advanced geometry. Looking in the line we recognized Maxine Hollingsworth, Betty Sheppard, and Betty Farmer, who have decided to come and look over D.H.S. to renew old memories. They were surprised to see that the cashier was Jean Franklin. Flying over the Fairlawn community, we saw Mrs. Elinor Morgan and Mrs. Katherine Bavless talking over the new teeth of their adorable babies. Hearing them talk we learned that some of our other classmates were married — among them Anna Lee Pitts, LaFerne McDaniel, Janice Fleenor, Phyllis Linkous, and Frances Wood. We found out that Shir- ley Stilwell was married and had twins, but the surprise came when we learned that Peggy Farmer had triplets!!! As we looked through Radford we saw a newsboy selling his papers on the corner of Norwood Street. The headlines read, “Donald Reece, new governor of Virginia.” In the same election Jim Hall became the new mayor of Melburn. It began to strain our eyes to look so far behind us so, resting our eyes, we looked directly below us where we saw a cloud of dust. Won- dering what it was we picked up our telescopes and peered through them. Why, we were in Indianapolis at the races. Flying around the track in their flashy rods were Albert Montgomery, Alvin Deck, and Edward Montgomery. Seated in the grandstands were Buddy Cox and Doug Cul- lip, editors-in-chief of “Hot Rod” magazine. Hearing a voice yell “Lights! Camera! Action!” we knew we were over the glamour city, Hollywood. The famous director, Bill Waterworth, was having a re-take of a love scene from “Atomic Love.” Starring in this movie was the Oscar winner, our old classmate, Emogene Roseberry. Passing by a toothpaste factory we saw Royce Akers, the boy with the Colgate smile, posing for a toothpaste advertisement. As we settled back once again, we switched on our portable radio. After a moment of static v e heard the voice of Doug Linkous, a favorite disc-jockey, spinning records by Junior McGrady, the latest in the hill- billy world. Coming in for a landing, we looked at our watches and realized that we would have to catch a Aero-car to get to our studio in time for an inspection tour. For we were the famous dancing teachers, Barbara Burks and Sue Jennings. We were going to see a review of the latest dances, one of which was the Space Bug Jump! • 33 — WHOS BEST DANCERS MOST IN LOVE KATHERINE BAYLESS-RONNV SIMPSON DICK MOR6AN-EUNOR MORGAN MOST DRAMATIC BEST WORKERS PATTY LOPNEY-IOWELL HAYES INEZ TOLBERT- BILL MOORE BEST LEADERS FRANCES WOOD-ROYCE AKERS BEST DRES5ED BUDDY COA -PEGGY FARMER CUTEST MOST BASHFUL BETTY HUDDLESTON- DONALD OALTON JAMES TWOCNTOM-CfCILlE COVEY QUIETEST MOST DEPENDABLE MONROE MfMlLLAH-EM GENf R05ESEBCV JEANDONCAN GARNIE DISH0N BIGGEST NUISANCES EMILY SEMONES-FFNNVCOMPTW WHO MOSTTALENTEO SHERWIN HOLT -
