HISTORY OF DUBACH HIGH SCHOOL An educatlonal un1 dates back to the year 1898 Thls unlt cons1sted of a two room bu1ld1ng The partltlon between the rooms was removed and the rudely constructed bu11d 1ng served as a tralnmg un1t The equlpment was very meager The benches were made of two planks attached to standards Later backs were provlded and blocks as foot rests for those chlldren whose feet could not reach the floor At flrst the teacher s desk served as a desk to all the chlldre 1 but later desks were made of one long plank w1de enough to facllltate wr1t1ng The school was fln nced by the followlng rates of tu1t1on From F1rst to Thlrd Reader zncluslve Sl 50 From Fourth to Slxth Read r lncluslve SZ O0 The flrst teacher was Mrs Beulah Llndsey of Prkadelph1a Arkansas Under her superv1s1on there were forty to S1Xl.y chlldren enrolled Nhscellaneous subjects were taught whlch probably would now range from the flrst to n1nth grade The school year lasted seven months w1th a salary of slxty flve or seventy dollars a month On account of frequent attacks of lllness Mr L.1ndsey employed two subst1tute teachers Mrs Walter Stokes and Mlss L11la Hunt Dur1ng the year 1899 a commumty Church was constructed whlch proved more adaptable to the educatlonal tralnmg of ch11dren It was not advlsable to erect a bulldlng for that Sp8C1f1C purpose so by agreement the school under the supervlsxon of Mr j B Stmll a natlve of Umon Parlsh moved to the commumty Church Mr St1ll remalned prxn clpal for three year Mlss W1ll1e Ashcroft of Wznnfleld became a teacher ln the same year Dur1ng the term of 1902 03 one hundred and forty elght puplls enrolled 1n the Dubach School The success of the school so st1mulated the cltlzens of the dlstrlct that a flve m1ll tax was voted for ten years Thls tax, wlth an elght or mne month term each RATTLER 1947 pm 5 All above the Sixth Reader- ------------ - ------- --52.50
