SPORTS REVIEW FOOTBALL CROSS COUNTRY Coldiron ' s football team started their pre-season play with a win over Bassett 7-0. Two games later Ontario fell to the Falcons for the second straight year. Although almost beating both South Pasadena and La Canada, the Falcons went winless in Le ue play. Duarte placed two players on the Rio Hondo League 1st team, they were Cecil Hooks, and Glen Tenove. Honorable mentions went to Ken Shepherd, Robert Edwards, and Chris Ruiz. The cross country team led by Coach Hanley had one of its most successful seasons in many years. The team went through the pre-season with a 3-2 record Al Ashcraft went to the CIF Finals where he placed 5th in a field of 85 run- ners. The team was led by the Ashcraft Bro- thers and Marc Greene. After the Falcons went undefeated during pre- season, many people thought that they might give Duarte its first Championship in many years. But the Falcons fell to the League powers, San Marino and La Canada. WRESTLING BASKETBALL Coldiron ' s mat men regained the championship from San Marino, with a 1-14-1 in the season. Gary Zulian, Tony Valenzuela, Mark Williams, Jim Laffin, Scott Vanatter, and Lou Fanucchi be- came league champs. Jim Laffin went on to repre- sent Duarte and the Rio Hondo league in the CIF finals. Notable, this year was the Valenzuela ' s Family ' s contribution of 3 top wrestlers. A 30 game losing streak was snapped this year when Fessler ' s basketball team beat Bell Gardens in the opening League game. The following week San Marino fell to Duarte. The Falcons ended the year with a 2-8 record. Pacing the Falcons through the long season was Victor Barrie who averaged over 20 points a game. BASEBALL TRACK At the time of this writing the baseball team should fare very well. Coach Owen ' s baseball team has seven returning lettermen from last years second place team. The only weak spot on the team may be the Falcons hitting. The team has good pitching with Terry Tenove, Bob Busby, Pat Zufall, Don Goldchuck, and Dominic Hyatt. ' ' -•— can get the hitting and pitching to- gether-, the Falcons to be contenders for the leagu championship. The track teams should make a clean sweep in all three divisions this year. During Mr. Hanley ' s first year as track coach the Cee ' s won the Cham- pionship. The following year the Bee ' s and Cee ' s won the Championship. This year, with most run- ners returning, the team should win in all levels. Strong in the hurdles are Walter Jordan and Ted Myles. The distance runners are also promising with the Ashcraft Brothers, Marc Greene, Felipe Brizuela, and Don Harris. 144
