I want to congratulate all of the students for living up to this slogan. The measure of an outstanding school year must always be based on the progress we have made in the education and activities program as well as on the amount of spirit that students have shown. In all three of these areas , we have shown excellent progress and with the involvement of many parents, we are now organizing such a great school that every graduating senior can hold up his head and say I am proud that I am from Duarte High School . To the graduating class of 1972, we express our best wishes for success in their future careers. David Reiss Principal ■■■ , A Mr. Robert Walton, Work Experience Coordinator Mr. Thomas Brooks, Asst. Zolp, D. Schavers, H. Carter 141 SPORTS REVIEW FOOTBALL CROSS COUNTRY Coldiron ' s football team started their pre-season play with a win over Bassett 7-0. Two games later Ontario fell to the Falcons for the second straight year. Although almost beating both South Pasadena and La Canada, the Falcons went winless in Le ue play. Duarte placed two players on the Rio Hondo League 1st team, they were Cecil Hooks, and Glen Tenove. Honorable mentions went to Ken Shepherd, Robert Edwards, and Chris Ruiz. The cross country team led by Coach Hanley had one of its most successful seasons in many years. The team went through the pre-season with a 3-2 record Al Ashcraft went to the CIF Finals where he placed 5th in a field of 85 run- ners. The team was led by the Ashcraft Bro- thers and Marc Greene. After the Falcons went undefeated during pre- season, many people thought that they might give Duarte its first Championship in many years. But the Falcons fell to the League powers, San Marino and La Canada. WRESTLING BASKETBALL Coldiron ' s mat men regained the championship from San Marino, with a 1-14-1 in the season. Gary Zulian, Tony Valenzuela, Mark Williams, Jim Laffin, Scott Vanatter, and Lou Fanucchi be- came league champs. Jim Laffin went on to repre- sent Duarte and the Rio Hondo league in the CIF finals. Notable, this year was the Valenzuela ' s Family ' s contribution of 3 top wrestlers. A 30 game losing streak was snapped this year when Fessler ' s basketball team beat Bell Gardens in the opening League game. The following week San Marino fell to Duarte. The Falcons ended the year with a 2-8 record. Pacing the Falcons through the long season was Victor Barrie who averaged over 20 points a game. BASEBALL TRACK At the time of this writing the baseball team should fare very well. Coach Owen ' s baseball team has seven returning lettermen from last years second place team. The only weak spot on the team may be the Falcons hitting. The team has good pitching with Terry Tenove, Bob Busby, Pat Zufall, Don Goldchuck, and Dominic Hyatt. ' ' -•— can get the hitting and pitching to- gether-, the Falcons to be contenders for the leagu championship. The track teams should make a clean sweep in all three divisions this year. During Mr. Hanley ' s first year as track coach the Cee ' s won the Cham- pionship. The following year the Bee ' s and Cee ' s won the Championship. This year, with most run- ners returning, the team should win in all levels. Strong in the hurdles are Walter Jordan and Ted Myles. The distance runners are also promising with the Ashcraft Brothers, Marc Greene, Felipe Brizuela, and Don Harris. 144 !;• n ' V ' : I I f ti ' ■ ' ?. Each organization functions as a daily class offering instruction for development of basic music skills in combination with high standards in the performance area. The larger choral groups. Girls ' Glee, Mixed Chorus, Concert Choir, and Ensemble appear an- nually in the Christmas Concert and Spring Con- cert. The programs usually feature selected so- loists, a Ladies ' Ensemble, and the Triple Trio. Throughout the year the Ensemble sings for various community groups and organizations. This group has been a distinguished representa- tive for Duarte High School in past years and has received commendation and praise. All students who elect courses in vocal music seek to attain a high level of competency. Top left- Mixed Choir, Mid. Left- Tri Trio, Bottom left- Ensemble, Top right- Girls ' Glee, Bottom right- Choir ■falMMN ■iPP : WIND ORCHESTRA The Band and Wind Orchestra are often confused. Both are musical groups but the Wind Orchestra deals with concert music and performances. This year the Wind Orchestra performed at the Los Angeles County Fair, a formal Christmas Concert, a Spring Concert at Clifton Jr. High School Audi- torium and a Pops Concert here at D. H. S. This year for the first time they competed in a Festival. They were in competition with other schools in the San Gabriel Valley. In a competi- tion like this a group must play a piece of music they ' ve prepared, a piece of music selected from a limited and selective list and a piece of music given to them by the judges to play on the spur of the moment. The group is judged on the three pieces for their intonation, interpretation, tone quality and accuracy. The Wind Orchestra this year has proven to be a most successful group. ic.; SOPHOMORE FRESHMEN CHEERLEADERS •i ' - er T. ' K •Aibdr •5 -3 ... . , . . For the first time in recent memory, the Duarte High Newspaper looked like a newspaper. We tried this year to concern ourselves with things that D. H. S. students could relate to. We tried to dig for news that was more important than bubble- gum things most highschool news- papers have. Editorially, we tried to deal with issues that would get people to think. We tried to editorialize on more than Senior privileges and other out- dated issues. Our Sports page covered more than just results of games. We tried to get into the reasons why and even ran an article on long-liair in sports. Additionally, our feature page pre- sented results of interesting surveys and other interesting features. There was no money allocated to us by A. S. B. All the money for the paper was raised by sales, subscription, and ads. We had to work hard for the money. This year, we tried a new technique of having the members of the staff make the major decisions. The advisor, Mr. Peale, served mainly as a resource person and did an excellent job with liis extensive journalism knowledge. It was a very valuable experience. -Bernard Ohanian- 175 FALL SECRETARY Rondi Botting FALL TREASURER Carleen Ahlgrim DIRECTOR OF ACTIYITIES Kim Kelly Jim Bergum Fall Spring STUDENT GOVERNMENT FALL ELECTION COMMITTEE HOMECOMING COMMITTEE DIRECTOR OF PUBLICITY Donna Mosby Martin AMgrim Fall Spring SPRING SECRETARY Jonatha King SPRING TREASURER Mike Kennedy DIRECTOR OF PEP Lynn Johnston CONDUCT COMMITTEE ETHNIC REPRESENTATIVES SPRING ELECTION COMMITTEE STUDENT LEADERS W. t;}j FALL VICE-PRESIDENT Ritchie Wells 178 DEDICATED TO GREGOR SAMSA OR CHERYL HANNA Do not be captured by the spirit of Futility and defeatism For evil and pain are Mere holes in the world of menace O My children The mountain may seem high And the sky dark But height is relative to The size of one ' s soul And darkness is the state one is in When one ' s eyes are closed There is no need to fight your brother- Just do what you must Reacting and fighting are barriers To fulfilling yourself You will hear some say it is impossible Or even worthless But don ' t let those with The crushed souls Spread their disease to you There are many students here at Duarte High that think the problems of this campus are unique. I am convinced, through talking to students at other High Schools that most of the problems we face are also shared by these schools. Therefore negative statements about Duarte being uniquely bad are not true. About the only problem that faces our school that is not a factor to others is that of financial assistance. I am of the opinion that with student support we can remove the apathy, or the nonchalant attitude of our student body. With the present S. R. C. I think we will move more this year in a more positive direction than any other Associated Student Body.
