And then what happened? An axmouncement was made that school would begin a week late and then on ahalf-day basis, with added restrictions necessary for group safety. The period of adjustment to this routine was interrupted by the regrettable wave of polio which caused the loss of more schooltime, and fears and anxiety for your friends, your families and also your own physical well-being. lt was necessary to curtail all school activities such as dances, suppers, parties, and to postpone the opening of the basketball season, but you did organize and carry through a most successful magazine campaign. The next step was the return to full-day sessions in the school with the almost new look. The aggravations of construction with workmen in and out, no gym, no showers and lockers, no typing class - proved to be no stumbling block because progress was evident. By Christmas the picture was much brighter and things were almost back to normal, Students and teachers alike were more calm and relaxed now that the confusion was over! Reviewing conditions like these is hardly necessary except that out of this chaos some de- finite conclusions can be drawn. Young people of today are made of sterner stuff: can overcome reverses, handicaps, and frustrations without apparent scarsg can accept responsibilities in an adult manner, Never once did I hear a Senior complain or alibig you accepted conditions over which you had no control in a cheerful manner. lwill always remember the Class of 1955 for its cooperation, its loyalty, perseverance and good sportsmanship. Thank you for allowing me to share this year with you, and thanks to your parents for permitting me to share you with them. Yours sincerely, Robert B. Shafer
