xL, so COMMANDER HARLAN KENNETH ULLMAN Following graduation from the Naval Academy Cdr Harlan Kenneth ULLMAN served extensively in surface combatants His assignments at sea have included Weapons Officer USS BROUGH CDE 1481 Operations and Weapons Officer USS FORREST SHERMAN QDD 931D Executive Officer USS COURTNEY QDE 10211 and Executive Officer USS FOR REST SHERMAN He served in Vietnam with Boat Squadron ONE as Officer-in-Charge of a SWIFT-BOAT and a SWIFT- BOAT Sub-division. Additionally, Cdr. ULLMAN spent two years on exchange with the Royal Navy as OperationsfASW Officer in HMS BACCHANTE, a British frigate. Prior to joining USS DUPONT, Cdr. ULLMAN served in Washington first on the faculty of the National War College where h directed the course of instruction in military strategy and then as staff assistant for the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy in the office of the Secretary of Defense. Command- er ULLMAN did his graduate work at the Fletcher School. He is married to the former Honorable Julian M. Russell of London, England.

USS DUPONT QDD-9411 is the third ship to be named after Rear Admiral Samuel Francis DuPont, a Civil War hero. The first DUPONT was Torpedo Boat No. 7 launched in 1897 and finally stricken from the record in 1920 when she was sold. The second ship to be named DUPONT was one of the famous four-stack destroyers , QDD-155, launched in 1918. Following extensive service during World War II, she was decommissioned in 1946. The present DUPONT was first commissioned 1 July 1957 at Bath, Maine by Mrs. Henry B. DuPont, the great grandniece of Rear Admiral DuPont. In 1969, DUPONT underwent an extensive overhaul and mod- ernization to upgrade the ship's anti-submarine warfare capability. Since commissioning, DUPONT has served in both the U.S. Atlantic and Pacific Fleets and has completed eight extended deployments to the Mediterranean and two to Southeast Asia. DUPONT has also seen duty in the North Atlantic as a member of the Standing Naval Forces Atlan- tic In 1978, DUPONT completed a circumnavigation of South America as part of the UNITAS XIX Task Force. During this cruise, DUPONT visited twenty-eight ports of call and transited the Beagle Channel, following the route of Charles Darwin, and the Panama Canal. For meritorious service while deployed to Southeast Asia, DUPONT was awarded the Navy Meritorious Unit Award. DUPONT also dis- plays the Purple Heart Medal on her bridge in commemoration of eight of her sailors who were wounded while the ship was in Southeast Asia.
