The first DUPONT was Torpedo Boat No. 7 launched in 1897 and finally stricken from the record in 1920 when she was sold. The second ship to be named DUPONT was one of the famous four-stack destroyers, CDD-1529, launched in 1918. Following exten- sive service during World War ll, she was decommissioned in 1946. The present DUPONT was first commissioned 1 July 1957 at Bath, Maine by Mrs. Henry B. DUPONT, the great grandniece of Rear Admiral DUPONT. ln 1969 DUPONT underwent an ex- ensive overhaul and modernization to upgrade the ship's antisubmarine warfare capability. Since commissioning, DUPONT has served in both the U.S. Atlantic and 'Pacific Fleets and has completed eight extended deployments to the Mediterranean and two to Southeast Asia. DU- PONT has also seen duty in the North Atlantic as a member of the Standing Naval Forces At- lantic. For meritorious service while deployed to Southeast Asia, DUPONT was awarded the Navy Meritorious Unit Award.'DUPONT also displays the Purple Heart Medal on her bridge in com- memoration of eight of her sailors who were wounded while the ship was in Southeast Asia. . -- - , V V ,, Y , I. . CARBONE, USN, of Fairmont, West Virginia was commissioned in 1959 after graduation from Fairmont State College. He earned a Master of Science De- gree in Management from the Naval Post- graduate School in Monterey, California in 1966. Since commissioning, CDR CARBONE has served tours of duty in USS SOLEY CDD 7075 as EMO and CIC Officer, as Executive Officer USS STALWART CMSO 4935, as Opera- tions Officer USS SEMMES CDDG 183, as Ex- ecutive Officer and Commanding Officer USS DUNCAN CDD 8745 and as Chief Staff Officer Destroyer Squadron Three. He has also ser- ved as AAW instructor at Dam Neck, Virginia, as Special Assistant to the Director of Enlist- ed Distribution in the Bureau of Naval Per- sonnel and as Assistant Director for Enlisted Recruiting Operations at the Navy Recruiting Command Headquarters, Washington, D.C. CDR CARBONE reported to DUPONT after a year of study at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University, Washington, D.C. CDR CARBONE is married to the former Lois Simons.
