CARPENTER Communications Officer Destroyer Squadron THIRTY-SIX was first established 1 July 1956. The squadron was primarily organized for antisubmarine warfare, being composed of six escort de- stroyers CGearing class DDE'sJ. The first overseas deploy- ment of the squadron was a North Atlantic cruise original- ly scheduled to consist of ASW exercise with NATO coun- tries in the North Atlantic. The North Atlantic cruise was interrupted when the squadron was ordered to the Medi- terranean to augment the U.S. SIXTH Fleet during the November 1956 Suez crises. Destroyer Squadron THIRTY-SIX was on a routine SIXTH Fleet deployment in the Mediterranean during the next Middle East crisis which culminated by the U.S. Marines landing in Lebanon in July 1958. . In February 1962, the squadron participated in Pro- ject MERCURY, during which Colonel GLENN success- fully completed the United States' first orbital flight. In October 1962,- DESRON THIRTY-SIX sailed for Cuba and assisted in the quarantine operation of Cuba in accor- dance with the proclamation of President John F. KEN- NEDY along with continued operations relating to crises in CYPNRUS and the Dominican Republic. DESRON THIR- TY-SIX entered the Pacific Ocean in September 1968 and again in August 1972 to augment the U.S. SEVENTH Fleet for operations in Southeast Asia. ' On 4 April 1978, DESRON THIRTY-SIX was reestab- lished utilizing personnel from the dis-established DES- RON SIX staff.
