CARPENTER Communications Officer Destroyer Squadron THIRTY-SIX was first established 1 July 1956. The squadron was primarily organized for antisubmarine warfare, being composed of six escort de- stroyers CGearing class DDE'sJ. The first overseas deploy- ment of the squadron was a North Atlantic cruise original- ly scheduled to consist of ASW exercise with NATO coun- tries in the North Atlantic. The North Atlantic cruise was interrupted when the squadron was ordered to the Medi- terranean to augment the U.S. SIXTH Fleet during the November 1956 Suez crises. Destroyer Squadron THIRTY-SIX was on a routine SIXTH Fleet deployment in the Mediterranean during the next Middle East crisis which culminated by the U.S. Marines landing in Lebanon in July 1958. . In February 1962, the squadron participated in Pro- ject MERCURY, during which Colonel GLENN success- fully completed the United States' first orbital flight. In October 1962,- DESRON THIRTY-SIX sailed for Cuba and assisted in the quarantine operation of Cuba in accor- dance with the proclamation of President John F. KEN- NEDY along with continued operations relating to crises in CYPNRUS and the Dominican Republic. DESRON THIR- TY-SIX entered the Pacific Ocean in September 1968 and again in August 1972 to augment the U.S. SEVENTH Fleet for operations in Southeast Asia. ' On 4 April 1978, DESRON THIRTY-SIX was reestab- lished utilizing personnel from the dis-established DES- RON SIX staff. Thirty-Six Captain G.M. Carter Captain Gerald M. CARTER, Jr., USN is a native of Charleston, S.C. He received his commission upon graduation from the ,U.S. Naval Academy in June 1954. Assigned initially to duty in USS R.A. OWENS CDDE 8273, Captain CARTER served as Assistant Gunnery Officer and Operations Officer. ln May 1956, he reported for duty as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander Destroyer Flotilla FOUR. From March 1958 until April 1959, Captain CARTER served as Commanding Officer, USS BRATTLEBORO CEPCER 8523. Following a tour of duty as Assistant Lieutenant Assignment Officer in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Cap- tain CARTER was ordered to USS DAHLGREN CDLG 123 to be that ship's first OperationsiOfficer. In October 1962, Captain CARTER re- turnedfto USS R. A. OWENS CDD 8273 as Executive Officer, perform- ing additional duty as Commanding Officer during OWEN'S 1964 mod- ernization. Following completion ofthe Command and Staff Course at the Naval War College in June 1965, Captain CARTER served as Ad- ministrative Assistant and Aide to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations. He commanded USS BRIDGET CDE 10243 from August 1967 until July 1968. Completing an assignment as Assistant Joint Secretary, Headquarters, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam in Septem- ber 1969, Captain CARTER then commanded USS LYNDE MC COR- MICK CDDG 83 until September 1971. Captain CARTER was awarded a M.S. Degree in Management by the Naval Postgraduate School in December 1972. Returning to Washing- ton in early 1973, he served successively as Political-Military Af- fairs Officer in the Department of State, Executive Officer to the Assist- ant Secretary of Defense Clnternational Security Affairs3 and Military Assistant-to the Deputy Secretary of Defense. Captain CARTER as- sumed command of Destroyer Squadron SIX in August 1977, Com mander Destroyer Squadron SIX was redesignated as Commander De- stroyer Squadron THIRTY SIX on 4 April 1978. Captain CARTER is mar- ried to the former Mary Patricia Overstreet of Savannah, Georgia. They have a son, Gerald M.
