The present DUPONT was first commissioned in July 1957 and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets, completing six deployments to the Mediterranean and two to Southeast Asiag In 1969, DUPONT was decommissioned for one year while undergoing an extensive overhaul and modernization period designed primarily to upgrade the ship's antisubmarine warfare capabilities. After recommissioning in May 1970, DUPONT has served for five months in the Mediterranean and has also seen extensive service in the Caribbean and Atlantic areas, participating in numerous exercises and special operational assignments 1 In March 1971 DUPONT became a unit of the Norfolk-based Destroyer Squadron TWENTY- SIX, the Navy's Mod Squad , so called because the ships are commanded and staffed by officers one grade junior to those normally assigned these billets in other ships of the fleet. Once again, on December 1, 1972, DUPONT deployed to the Mediterranean. During her seven months of service with the SIXTH Fleet, DUPONT participated in numerous exercises and good-will visits to many Mediterranean ports.
