As Radarmen we managed to get involved in just about everything. Our job: collection, evalu- ation, display, and dissemination of information. As a matter of fact, the only other place on a Navy ship where information is as readily available is the salad bar on the Mess Decks. In preparation for the cruise there were many things to be done. Among these were pubs to be corrected, read and re- read, charts to be ordered and placed within quick and easy reach and training for all hands. A highly proficient and coordinated team had to be constructed almost from scratch. Underway! Only a few weeks remained until we reached our assigned area. Were we ready? By the time we reached the amazing city of NPO , we had molded a precision gunfire support machine. With tense anticipation, we took our station off the beautiful, mysterious, and un- wg 0 f , .uv , l -bf if , .J ' ,f-ff f:'ff'f'Q ! 'iw' W Y, f mf W.-,:.,j .f,Sf,g gf, . fwc if ff' ' .,,. . San Diego, Calif. Alpine, New Jersey DC Division was one of the busiest groups on the ship during the WestRac deployment. In ad- dition to their own work load, the Radiomen served as communicators for the embarked staff. Under the able leadership of RMC Kelnhofer, the Radiomen handled over two thousand messages a month and still managed to keep the radio shack operating smoothly and efficiently. Chief Crawford's Signal Gang was kept busy processing over 1500 visual messages and ex- changing traffic with over 50 ships. They left Norfolk with only two qualified operators and through long hours and hard work managed to qualify an additional two. In spite of inexperienced personnel, long hours, aging, and obsolescent gear and frequent alter-ations, OC Division produced an excellent record and returned wiser for the experience.
