F e Iwcfory rai The 1955-56 season saw our Panthers win eighteen and lose six. W'ith our record of seven wins and two losses in league play we ended the season i11 a three way tie for second place. The season's greatest thrills came during the Illinois Tech Tournament. Hlinning five straight games The Panthers became tourney champions lor the third time in four years. Completing his third year as head basketball coach is the leader of this fine team, Coach .lim Brown. The season's best games were victories in overtime periods against Moline, Hyde Park, and Lindblom: and the wins over perennially strong teams Dunbar, Crane Tech and Roosevelt ol' Gary. 1Ve scored 100 points or more in three games culminating in a 117 point barrage against Farragut to set a record which has since been broken. The tea1n's keenest disappointment was the loss ol' a hard fought game to Tilden 71-70. Leading by a slim margin during most of the game, the Panthers were unsuccessful in staying ofl the rally ol an in- spired Tilden team. The year's poorest showing was made against Taft in the play-off game which we lost 73-61. The 1955-56 Panthers boasted several outstanding individual per' formers. The star in our midst was McKinley Cowsen, an excellent all-around player who was acclaimed most valuable player in the llli- nois Tech Tournament. Clifford 1Vhite was a speedy, alert floor lead' er whose loss at mid-year hurt the fortunes of the Panthers. Best competitors after February were Luther Turner, a senior who has def veloped at DuSable into a gifted shooter, and Louis Bond whose ac- curate eye and effective defensive play should make him one of the city's best players next year.
