DEDICATION 3,2499? 5... :5 We, the Annual Staff of 1958-1959, dedicate this annual to Mrs. Peggy Welch as a small token of our admiration and appreciation. Her tireless efforts and desire for perfection have been an inspiration to each of us. THE PRINCIPAL t'One or the maximum pleasures of life is derived from reminiscing into our past. We are particularily concerned about remembering our friends and the rich experiences that we shared with our friends. As the vapor of life lifts With the passing of time each of us will explore once again the hidden memories of these four years at DuPont High School. No rich- er recollection Will be found than those afforded by the peering into this the history of your delightful years as a student at DuPont High. May the peace of life which sutpasseth all under- standing be yours and surely such peace will be yours, if the wisdom of God is your companion. MRS. Industrial Arts CLASS HISTORY History has been established this year! How fortunate we are to be graduating the same year that man has made at- tempts to reach the moon. Who knows but what one of our class will be among those to make the first trip to the moon. As we remrnisce years from now over those fun-packed days of high school, which are now history, we could never forget that first day we entered as green Freshmen , scared stiff. Of course we all looked fashionable that day called Freshman Day , remember? How could we forget those male cuties donned so petitely in feminine attire! Our Freshman sponsors, Miss Jackson, Miss Osborne, Mrs. Welch, Mrs. Worley, and Mr. Bates, so ably helped us through that year of confusion. Doyle Claiborne was elected President. The Class Superlatives in the Who's Who Elec- tion were Julia Shaw, Fredina Hart, Ray Cooper, and Doyle Claiborne. As the year came to a close, tragedy struck in the passing of one of our finest classmates, Milton Eddinsi We became more confident our next year, even though we were known as ltsilly Sophomores. Donnie Poole was elected President, and our class Was recognized in the field of sports as Ray Cooper joined the varsity squad. Sydney Sherwood was elected cheerleader, and Frances Patton represented our school as one of the delegates to the S. A. S. C. Convention held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Frances Patton, Fredina Hart, Donnie Poole, and Eugene Franklin were elected Class Superlatives. Both basketball teams were District and Regional Champs. As the year closed we anticipated the coming year when we would be upperclassmen. This was almost too good to be true! This all-important year marked one of our most exciting experiences. Donnie Poole was reaelected as our class Presi- dent. Fredina Hart was chosen from our class as one of the delegates to attend the S. A. S. C. Convention in Arlington, Virginia. Annette Crowell and Betty Davis joined Sydney as cheerleaders. uA Broom for the Bride was the title of our Junior Play produced to raise money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. The banquet theme was The Confederate Ball' with delicious food served plantation style. Donnie Poole crowned Diane Smith, Belle of the Ball. Our contribution to sports was something to be proud of. Ray Cooper set a state high school record in the high hurdles at the State Track Meet. Ray, Billy Gregory, and Alton Jenkins were members of the varsity football squad. After a successful football season, basketball was the next goal. The girls and boys were N. I. L. Champs, District Champs, and the boys captured Region honors, While the girls were Runners-up. Dolores Sanders and Fredina Hart were attendants to the homecoming queen. At last! That long awaited moment when we were classified as sophisticated Seniors. What a wonderful feeling. to be on the threshold of a life ahead, but sad to be leaving four wonderful years behind that we cherish in our memories. Doyle Claiborne was elected to pound the gavel. The officers of the Student Body were President, Eugene Franklin; Vice President, Donnie Poole; Secretary, Linda Duke; Treasurer, Doris Apple; Girl Sgt.-ataArms, Betty Davis; Boy Sgt.- at-Arms, Jesse Hill; and Historian, Fredina Hart. Kelley Wright was editor of the Leaves of Hickory , and Frances Patton edited the Crimson Chronicle. The delegates this year to the S.A.S.C. Convention held in Jacksonville, Florida were Eugene Franklin and Linda Duke. Kelley Wright served as President of the Beta Club. Again our class was well-represented in the sports activities. Ray Cooper was captain of the football team and Buddy Martin alternate-captain. Other members of the team were Jimmy Moore, Mike Pryor, T om Bottorff, Alton Jenkins, Ralph Bass, and Billy Gregory. At the close of the season Ray was named on the AA All-City team. Anita Smith and Joyce Bullington were senior homecoming attendants, and Fredina Hart was crowned queen by Ray and Buddy. Janice McAlister, Mary Baggett, Julia Shaw, Anita Smith, and Patsy Clark were members of the Girls basketball team. Janice and Mary served as co-captains. Donnie Poole, Wayne Russ, Kelley Wright, and Jesse Hill, were members of the Boys' team. And now with tear-filled eyes we remember those fun-packed days, some of. elation, others of depression. Graduation day will live in our hearts as this closes the last chapter in this phase of our lives. It comes forewarned; it comes in a definite pattern. Yet it comes as a mild shock to all that attend its rebirth. Participants enter robed in scarlet gowns; march to their chairs As though they were a choir summoned to sing hymns of mourning at the passing of a friend. Their friends and loved-ones stand at attention as they take their rehearsed places. Time pays no respect to this great occasion. Stillness reigns victorious over a hundred souls. Memories distill in translucent tears that dominate moments of remorse. Weep no more. Let not thy soul weep. There has been no death, only A transmigration of childhood. The scarlet cloak represents your efforts, my elders. You have guided me, trained me to choose right from wrong. You have proved faithful to me. But now I must turn elsewhere for aid. I must use what you have taught me. In a way that only I can choose. Weep not this night my faithful friend, But say a prayer for me that I might represent you well in all things. Frances Patton ALTON JENKINS KENNETH McPEAK C97 ' ' - . JULIA SHAW FREDINA HART EUGENE FRANKLIN FRANCES PATTON PATTY UHLES LINDA PULLEY DAVID TAYLOR CLASS PROPHECY The premier of Donnie Poole's latest cinemascope spectacular, Loves of a Leatherneck , based on the adventurous life of Master Sergeant David L. Kirby, has drawn many celebrities to the Jewel Theatre, owned by Clint Watts, here on Broadway tonight. As we try to make our way through the crowd, we see Jim McAlister, famed comedian, interviewing each arrival. This important social event is also being televised by station WHO, with Jimmy Cook and Jimmy Drake manning the cameras. Let's just cross the street here and...oops! Those hotrodder's almost got us. Wasnlt that David Dillon, Tommy Breeden, and Johnny Skelly driving those three cars? We can't be sure, for they're out of sight now, but officer Frank Cowherd will soon catch them and give them a few pointers on safe driving. Well, let's go onehere's a space we can slip into. A big limousine has just pulled up and Eugene Franklin, famous surgeon and horticulturist, known for his black orchid, steps out. With him is Professor Alton Jenkins, who has only recently returned from a trip to the moon. They have been to a meeting of the Successful Scientists of America, where Dr. Frances Patton gave a stir- ring speech. Judy Lineberry is president of this organization. We notice Josephine Knight, reporter for the New York Cronicle, and Kenneth McPeak, photographer, getting all the details of this affair. As we wait for another Cat to arrive, we can't help admiring the attractive marquee which was put up by Wayne Russ and George Powell. We see that Eugene Collins is scenery director, and Mike Pryor, Anita Smith and Julia Shaw are dance supervisors for the movie. Another car drives up, chauffeured by Jerry Ross, and Annette Crowell, Sandra Sexton and Patsy Clark step out. These three glamorous startlets can currently be seen in the comedy, Playboys Prefer Blondes , produced by Gary Hayes, and directed by Tom Bottorff. Janice McAlister, Jim's sister, is now taking over the interview, while Jim grabs a bite to eat, at Jesse Hill's select restaurant. Jan and Jim recently backed Shirley Brown Robinson on one of the top ten records, which is being played by Bookie Foster, the nation's favorite disc jockey. Sylvia Hennessee and Barbara Crisp are now being interviewed. They ate the co-authors of that best-sellet book How to Get Your Man in Three Easy Lessons. As we wait for the show to start, a glance across the street shows us The Sisters , a fashionable women's shop, co- owned by Doris Apple and Dolores Sanders. Doris, Judy Carter, and Joanne Williams model clgthes here'. Sandra Corley, their advertisement manager, and Linda Pulley, their business manager, are greatly ICSPOUSIble for the shop's success. Next door to it is Bonnie Becker's bakery. Bonnie, with the aid of Carolyn Denton, Norma Clemmons and Virginia Rager, turns out delicious pastries, and caters to the parties of the socialites of this area, Dorothy Simmonds and Elizabeth Richards. As they return from the business district, we wave to Patty Uhles, Virginia Simmons, and Ora Flatt, who are secre- taries to several big executives. Among them are Kelley Wright, Donald Elkins, Wayne Ladd and Lynn Midgett. Perhaps we'd better get back to the theater. It's been rumored that some of the members of the All-American foot- ball team are expected, and here they are now-Ray Cooper, Billy Gregory, and Buddy Martin. With them is Sydney Sherwood, who was elected cheerleader for the team. Doyle Claiborne and Jim Moore, two of New York's most dashing bachelors, can hardly keep the girls away. Three autograph seekers, Pat Stout, Linda Duke and Betty Overstreet have been causing riots all evening. Some television stars are now arriving: William Jenkins and Howard Eddins from the Grand 01' Up-Roar country music show, Nancy Peal, who demonstrates her favorite recipes on Kitchen Matinee, the Hayes twins, Glenda and Lenda, Who do home permanent advertisements, and Elmer Brown of the Fisherman's Guide program. I believe the program is about to start, so let's give our ticket to Betty Davis, the cute ticket girl, and maybe we'll have time to buy something to eat from Ronnie Ferrell at his refreshment bar. Rebecca Raymer, Minnie Reeves, Brenda Scott, and Jane Sutton, the usherettes, Will show,us to our seats. Eugene Cartet and his orchestra will entertain us with a few numbers before the show starts. The more famous members of this orchestra are Bobby Scott, Ray Stinson and Tommy Crosslin. It is now only a few minutes before the movie is shown, and everyone is anxiously waiting. But first, we see the curtains part, and Ralph Bass steps out. Ladies and Gentlemen , he is saying, I hope that you will enjoy this production, and I believe you Will, but before it starts, I'd like to make an announcement on behalf of Sergeant Kirby. He has asked that I dedicate this movie to all of his old friends at DuPont High School back at Old Hickory, Tennessee. He says he has noted many of them in the audience. Could you all please stand? Well, what a surprise this is! Over there we see Mary Baggett and Wilma Jackson. Mary now coaches the nation's top girls' basketball team, and Wilma is the head nurse at one of the biggest hospitals in the country. And looke there in the back are Lewis Malone and Billy and Bobby Snell with their scout troops. This movie should be especially interesting to them. Why, I believe everyone here is DuPont alumni! James Ford and David Taylor-Who'd ever think that they would go from paper delivery routes to editors of the two biggest newspapers in New York! And don't Calver Rollins and Robert Fleming look distinguished. But lookethe house lights are being dimmed, and the movie is starting tMiller Goodman, Joe Gammon and Ralph Ray are running the projectorsl. , NOW everyone's attention is drawn toward the screen. The list of the cast is flashed upon the screen, and We see that Lewis Hammers, Jimmy Craddock, Jimmy Williams and Willard Rader play David's old buddies; Fredina Hart the understanding nurse; Patsy Davis, Ftedinais wise-cracking assistant; Charles Harper, the snappy lieutenant; and Charles Bibb, the cheerful cook. This premier has certainly turned out to be something for us to remember, but let's sit back and relax now, and enjoy the movie. We can all get together and reminisce later at the Swank Hotel! Boy, the time has flown. In just a few more years now We'll be almost grown! They call us silly sophomores And were never more correct. But after all, in high school, What else would they expect? With hopes for the future, We hold our heads up high. We'll never live this year again. . . . Our junior year is nigh. With all our memories of last year, We look forward to the rest. My papa sends me here to school To try to learn the Golden Rule. Every day I take Phys. Ed. And try to soak into my head, All the rules of each game Although none of them are the same. I study subjects that are hard for me, If it weren't for the teacher, I couldn't see. English is hard and Latin is sad But it takes all of these to make me a grad. I study Science and Algebra and all the rest But lunch period is the one I like best. Although they say I am very green I think I have a pretty good old bean. Phillip Coleman HM HHH H l M whuu-u'p 5?
