CLASS HISTORY VVell here I am walking up to get my diploma w hlch certifies my graduation from Du Pont Hlgh Iye en Joyed so much these past four years Oh excuse me I didn t mtroduce myself I am the Senior Llass of 1991 All of me IS not here tonight I was once robust and bubbllng oyer with students but now some of them are separated from me for N21I'lOllS reasons Part of them got married some just qult and some left be cause they were called by the Armed SCFXICCS of the Umted States Im not a class that always dwells on the past but let me just grye you a resume of my high school experience I remember how the first day I was a bit nery ous not knowlng what to expect from thls cozy looking build mg which I now faced It cast a shadow on part of the lawn as the morning sun rose that radiant Septem ber day ln 1947 Mfhen the bell rang part of mv group was eager to get inside to see what was 1n store while the other part hesitated not knowing what to thmk Fmally both parts compromised and before I knew ll I was on my way ln the roaming bulldmg called Du Pont Hlgh Mr Ronald E Brmkley was the principal and Mlss Emma ean Flowers was my spon sor My president was Kenneth Bell as I got under way in what was to be the greatest four years of my 1 e I remember how I contrlbuted a lot of boys to the Junlor varsity football and basketball teams and I believe I had some on the baseball and tenms and golf teams I was notified that I was to haye a party and boy did I enjoy lt' I had neyer seen anything like this before Parties only four classes physical events but oh how I hated that 1n1t1at1on Boy fhose Semors thought they owned me' lVhy they tried to treat me l1ke a slave but I just grinned and passed on knowing that some dav I would be grown also One of the best parts of the year was the mid term t6Sl schedule I could come and take a test and then have plenty of leisure tlme to spend as I saw fit Oh and how I enjoyed voting for IVhos Who IVell finally final exams came and before I knew it I had completed my first year 1n high school During the summer vacatlon I recelyed an annual which reviewed the year completely I enloved the vacatlon but I was happy when I began the second year at Du Pont My mckname was changed from the Freshman Greenle of 1947 48 to the Silly Sopho more Mr Brmkley was stlll principal and Miss Flowers was agaln my sponsor but this year I called her Miss Emma mstead of Miss Flow ers I had Knox VVr1ght as my president and placed an eyen larger number of boys on the YHTIOUS ball teams 'VVhy I had four glrls on the varslty squad' This IS the year the boys were the State Runners up m basketball which made me proud of the team s accompllshments Soon I had another party and met new frlends I carried one less book the tests seemed a little harder and some of my grades dropped down a bit Well be fore long I got my second Bulldog annual and oh d1d I get the flattery My goodness I don t believe I have ever seen as much Once again the superlatrves were elected It wasnt long until I found my Sophomore year comlng to a close and it passed much faster than the Freshman year Soon I found myself resting 1n the shade of the old apple tree hldlng from the une July and August sun Then came September 1949 I was a umor and I acqulred as a nlckname the Jolly UIIIOI' I was Jolly too because I knew many more people than I knew two years ago when I was a Freshman This is the year I had to play host to the Seniors at the unlor Senior banquet In addition to this I had another Class party the thlrd for me slnce I had been at Du Pont and man oh man dld I cash ln on the sports department' Not bragglng but I practlcally furmshed the team with students from my class ln eyery sport tool Tlme rolled around agaln for the selectlon of our superlatlyes Oh yes Knox IVr1ght won the nomlnatlon and was president again and NI1ss Flowers was still my sponsor This year we called her just plain Emma By the way th1s IS the year my class plcked out their rings I had a new principal this yen He was Mr lmmy Edwards who was welcomed 1nto the fold and ll didnt take him long to get acquainted w1th me and the other classes It wasn t long unt1l I recelyed my third annual and again ll was filled with notes and Sl s Tow ard the litter pall of the year I had whole bunches of students runnlng for Student Body Olfl ces 1 remember that Billy McKinney was elected as the president with many other of my students on the Council They didn t get too much of a chance to get the ball rolling as the end of the year rolled around Next year I was to be a Sophlstlcated Senior Ivell next year came and I found the burden of the school resting on my shoulders the Freshmen coming to me for advice and the entlre school looklng up to me and waiting for me to set the example I felt a keener sense of responslblllty this year as I realized that if I didn t do the work ll wouldn t be done Knox Mfrxght took the office of president for the third con SCCUIIVC year and Blllv McKinney who was ylce president for the last two years took office as the President of the Student Body Nlr Edwards was my principal again and Miss Flowers still my sponsor but we didnt call her Nfiss Flowers Nllss Emma Emma or ey en Emma ean but Rosebud This year my class put out the first prlnted paper 1n the hlstory of the school Doug Xfanmng and 'hlYld XVest were the captalns of the grid teams while McKmney and -Xkln led the cagers through a successful season Again I furnished most of the squad for ey ery sport Thls year I really sent a whole bunch of bovs to the tournaments The un1ors were hosts to us this year as we both cele brated the unlor Semor banquet Seyeral other partles were planned throughout the vear in order to make our last year the happlest year eyer Oh I forgot to mention that our basketball team went to the district finals for the 4th consecutlye time S you see this was really a blg year -is a matter of fact this year I got my rings and boy w as I proud of them' Then came the baccalaureate services and class night Thev brought back so many memories and now graduation night I am now recelylng my diplomas and big tears roll down mv cheeks as I slng FAREWEI L TO TI-IEE FAREWEI I TO THEE Our golden days are coming to an end But we shall hope for brighter days to come XVhen frlends shall meet with friends Bv TEMP SPARKMAN Y f .
