Foreword For the theme of the 1959 DUPONTIAN, I have chosen Outer Space. A few years ago you would have thought of outer space merely as something you would have read about in a fiction book. Now that fiction has turned into fact. As you leaf through the pages of the yearbook, you will see DuPont invaded by little people from another world. They go through the daily activities with the students and into our halls of learning. Through their eyes, perhaps you will view many events of the year which ordinarily might seem un- important. To travel in a rocket ship is an adventure that will be enjoyed by only a privileged few. Life is an adventure to be shared by all. After graduation, some of us will attend college while others will immediately begin their life's work. No matter which fields you choose to enter, each is full of hopes and dreams waiting to come true. Be ready to take your stand in these new fields that are being opened each day to the student who is ready with determination and ambition. 2 T gf 9 2 DEDICATION FACULTY CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISING ADVERTISERS INDEX Contents Ze Za 7-Ummm ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE SENIOR CLASS OF DUPONT HIGH SCHOOL IN BELLE, WEST VIRGINIA 4 gmc of M57 In Dedication 5 ' A liliw , . , , VL, . , fa- Y 1533 I . , i -5:ifzfQ,.1sf. Her untiring efforts in behalf of her seniors will long be gratefully remem- bered. 6 , ,W r.l. ,... . - , ,PRI NCKPA 0 T0 You R LEADER K 'K Faculty Our Principal The theme for the 1959 DuPontian cer- tainly is a timely one. Outer Space today is a scientific expression-ten years ago it was the name of a comic book. I wonder if our student body is familiar with the termi- nology, as it might be used to apply to pre- sent school life and future adult living? Shall I translate a few common terms? LAUNCHING PAD Success in school and life is tied so closely to home environ- ment. The family that shares the joys and problems of every-day living, will send the child through school with a strong probabil- ity of no miss-fires in life. Are you doing your share to create this type of launching pad? BOOSTER STAGES In the process of growth, we pass through several stages in personality. In our childish days we are likely to blast-off at parental control. These tantrums disappear in teen days to give proper direction to adult thrust into life. Are your Booster Stages normal or have you failed to progress past stage one of imma- turity and self-centeredness? ROCKET PROPELLANT The ultimate objective in scientific power is solid fuel. If you are ready for a DuPontian Yearbook, your driving force should be recognizable. It must be a solid desire to amount to some- thing. Ambition is a powerful propellant. Do you have this solid --as jive would ask? SATELLITE A body in earth's orbit. All of our educational glory, make a flashy splurge and soon burn out. Will life's prob- lems burn up your future? TRANSMISSION OF DATA The avowed objective of scientific forces in our United States is not War but Peace. We hope the product of DuPont High will be firmly con- structed in moral fiber and bound together in learning eagerness. They shall go forth into space to gather useful gems that will be re- turned to swell the great mass of knowledge called life. Are you ready for outer space? lr I 4 Ill r A ,pg ' ft L f 5 5 .Md Guidance and experience qualify our Dean of Boys, MR. HARRY DOUGLAS, to help the man of the future get on the right track in his high school. Solving problems of school and home life is not the only job of the dean. Schedule changes, a boy in trouble and taking care of absences are all included in his busy routine. Throughout the schoolday, he is always ready to lend a helping hand. Our Deans Seated behind the desk, over which many varied and curious conversations take place, is our dean, VIOLET CAMPBELL. Walk into her office and you will never find her idle. A few of her many tasks around DuPont are the arranging of students schedules, coun- seling girls on every subject from matrimony to Mendelssohn, or loaning money to a girl who just discovered there is a ballgame and she has no change. 9 Secretary and Help Above-Mrs. Scherer takes time out from her busy schedule to smile for the DuPontian photographer. Her duties include taking care of transcripts, getting out announcement sheets, and tending to the bookstore. Below-These girls come to the aid of Mrs. Scherer by running errands, typing and help- ing in filing. They are: Seated-Joann Garrison, Janet Stone, Esther Miley. Standing- Stephanie Bucky, Rose Fleshman, Sue Holtsclaw, Asbury. They are: Johnna Jackson, Myr- iam Hitchcock, Mildred Hopkins, Nancy Atkins, and Barbara Wilton. Below-These girls work together to help make Mr. Douglas' job more pleasant. Their duties are about the same as other office assistants. They are: Eugenia Berrier, Sara Whitten, Gardia Taylor, Carrol Wolfe, and Mary Cooke. ll Twila Brown--Fairmont State College, B.S. Morris H a r v e y College, M.A. Marshall College, 7th Grade English, Quill and Scroll Department In the following pages of this faculty section you will meet the teachers of DuPont. This year the DuPontian has ar- ranged the faculty in subject division. All teachers, English, Math, Commer- cial Arts, Science, Physical Educa- tion, Home Economics, History, Mu- sic, and Manual Training, have been placed together with a class picture. Seniors may study Macbeth while an eighth grader may be learning the parts of speech. The science student may be launching into the new space age. Preparing for a well rounded edu- cation and personality are all a part of the school life, and'these teachers are all vitally needed. What is a house wife without the knowledge that she may gain in a home economics class and how would a student prepare for college without math, English and all of the other subjects that are taught by our teachers. PANTHERS ROLL OVER SOUTH CHARLESTON The Panthers opening game this season PANTHERS BOW TO MONTGOMERY DuPont ran into some difficulties against Montgomery, losing a fumble riddled contest by a score of 26-13. A Panther fumble set up Montgomery's first score by Gary Ballard, giv- ing the Greyhounds an early lead. However, Blake's pass to Robinson, and Wiseman's extra point made the score 7-6. This wasn't for long though as Jim Wills' score put Montgomery ahead again and this time to stay. Second half scores for the Greyhounds came on runs by Wills and Dick Taylor. The first two scores came on 63 and 25 yard scampers by Chauncey Robinson, both in the first quarter. Charles Blake passed 31 yds. to Robinson for the other Hrst half' Panther tally. Scoring for South Charleston were Michaux and Combs. At intermission the Panthers led 18-14. Rob- inson continued his scoring in the last half on a 21 yard pass play from Blake and Wiseman booted the extra point. Combs scored again for the Black Eagles to make the final score 25-20. Welch 1205 charges upfield gaining yardage before Elkview closes in. DUPONT TIES DUNBAR DuPont traveled to Dunbar and surprised a highly-touted Bulldog team with a hard fought 19-19 contest. Chauncey Robinson plunged over from the one for the Panther's first score. Dunbar then scored' two straight touchdowns, both by Dave Santrock, to take an early lead. Before halftime, however, Blake's 34 yard pass to Robinson put the Panthers back in the game, making the score 13-12. In the third period, the Bulldogs again shot into the lead on a score by Jim Kay. A Blake to Deardorff pass play assured the Panthers of a tie game. DUPONT ROMPS ELK HERD The Panthers of DuPont had very little trouble in registering their fourth and final win of the season over a helpless Elkview team on the home field. Getting off to a rousing start on two Chancey Robinson scores and a Blake to Benny Welch pass, the Panthers coasted to a 40-0 triumph. Kelly opened up the second half by returning an Elkview kick- ofi' 88 yards. With the Panthers leading 27-0, the Elk Herd made their only threat of the game, driving to the 10 yard line of DuPont. A stubborn Panther line, however, refused to yield a score. Kelly raced 80 and 10 yards to end the game's scoring. St. Albans defenders charge in as Kelly 1345 cuts upfield R17 .
