QS lf' Mind Mrs. Clifton Scherer has taken over the job of school secretary. There are many tasks that have to be performed by this petite lady. Taking care of school records, filing, and having charge of the book stores keeps her busy throughout the day. Mary Whitlock, Susie Kidd, Lora Harless, Karen Franklin, Nancy Meadows, Nancy Dean, Sandra Johnson, and Connie Hitchcock are all oiiice assistants in the principal's office. They help Mrs. Scherer keep the office in tip-top condition. These future secretaries find that publishing and distributing the announcement and absence sheets, answering the phone, keeping the files in order, and running errands are only a few of the duties to be performed by a secretary. 9

Our Principal Dear DuPontian: n For the past forty years, I have had an intimate contact with teen-agers. I have en- joyed what I fondly wish to recall as a sym- pathetic and guiding role with this age of youth. Upon being informed that the theme of your 1958 DuPontian was The Modern Teen- Ager, I had a quick flashback over the years. The word modern disturbed me. At the age of 15 I was a modern teen-ager. Where do these present-day kids get that title? I suppose each batch of fresh teens has as- sumed they are the modern youngsters, with the new language, and original clothing styles. With the rapidly changing picture in scientific and geographical events, the present high schooler is far in advance, in most ways, to the older moderns of the Ford Model T and snow picture TV. Yet, in each generation of modern teen- agers, one perpetual common cry has been raised-Juvenile Delinquency. I firmly be- lieve, that for every juvenile hoodlum there 8 are hundreds of boys and girls doing real work in classrooms, for every thrill seeking youth giving anguish and tears to parents there are those thousands of youngsters gaining scholarships and social graces. For- mer moderns may not have known all the words to The Star Spangled Banner, but wherever our national anthem was played, in Korea, on Salerno Beach, or at Belleau Woods, our American boys gave those at home a great swelling pride in their modern teen-agers. Today, they may need a gentle nudge to enroll, and interested assistance, to conquer those more challenging, scientific courses in Math and Science. But with com- petent and understanding instruction they will come through with flying colors in com- petition with the forced-feeding tactics used on the hapless Soviet youth. I have the highest faith in the young people who now walk our halls, just as I am very proud of our past modern teen-agers who are now fine citizen members of the Du- Pont High Alumni.

Deans Prove Most Helpful MRS. VIOLET CAMPBELL, Dean of girls, has a busy schedule to fulfill. It includes giving advice and being counselor to the girls. She seems to always be around to lend a helping hand when it is needed. Her guidance is always welcomed and appreciated. The office assistants who aid Mrs. Campbell in her daily tasks are Gardia Taylor, Barbara Haddad, Julia Hitchcock, and Sandra Lancaster. Some of their routines are filing, writing excuses, and general office work. The deans' office keeps Mrs. Campbell and these girls busy throughout the day performing their duties and assisting both new and old students. 10
