It is a com- plete record of your school year, therefore, we have chosen The Modern Teenager as the theme for the 1958 DU PONTIAN. In you, the teenagers of today, lies the future of our country and the world. What you are today and the goal you are working for plays an import- ant part in the building of a nation. Whether your ambition is to be a scientist, teacher, doctor, or whether you plan to enter the business field, you are an important factor, and you must realize this to succeed and attain the goal you are seeking. So, students of DuPont High, you help hold the future of the world in your hands. To make your world a better one, study hard and try to achieve all the knowledge you can and make your school days the best you can for yourself and others. 2 QR S ff DEDICATION .................... 6 FACULTY .......................... 7 CLASSES ..............,............. 17 ORGANIZATIONS .....,...... 69 ACTIVITIES ....,,....,.......,.,. 99 ATHLETICS ....,.............,... 111 ADVERTISING ................ 125 ADVERTISERS INDEX .... 153 C wwf' :-W wrwwxw- t Qwmvx 1 S x S Wi, ,W 1 . GARDNER Student, soldier, chemist, teacher and father of two lively boys-this would serve to give you a capsule picture of Mr. Billy F. Gardner to whom the DuPontian is dedicated by the Class of 1958. We feel that Mr. Gardner truly deserves this honor since he is an alumnus of DuPont High School and, naturally, has a vital interest in all things pertaining to our school. His work does not stop with the classroom, for he is busily engaged with the Hi-Y Club and handling the finance for all school events as well. For his contribution to our school and our community, we proudly dedicate this issue of The DuPontian. 6 Faculty Our Principal Dear DuPontian: n For the past forty years, I have had an intimate contact with teen-agers. I have en- joyed what I fondly wish to recall as a sym- pathetic and guiding role with this age of youth. Upon being informed that the theme of your 1958 DuPontian was The Modern Teen- Ager, I had a quick flashback over the years. The word modern disturbed me. At the age of 15 I was a modern teen-ager. Where do these present-day kids get that title? I suppose each batch of fresh teens has as- sumed they are the modern youngsters, with the new language, and original clothing styles. With the rapidly changing picture in scientific and geographical events, the present high schooler is far in advance, in most ways, to the older moderns of the Ford Model T and snow picture TV. Yet, in each generation of modern teen- agers, one perpetual common cry has been raised-Juvenile Delinquency. I firmly be- lieve, that for every juvenile hoodlum there 8 are hundreds of boys and girls doing real work in classrooms, for every thrill seeking youth giving anguish and tears to parents there are those thousands of youngsters gaining scholarships and social graces. For- mer moderns may not have known all the words to The Star Spangled Banner, but wherever our national anthem was played, in Korea, on Salerno Beach, or at Belleau Woods, our American boys gave those at home a great swelling pride in their modern teen-agers. Today, they may need a gentle nudge to enroll, and interested assistance, to conquer those more challenging, scientific courses in Math and Science. But with com- petent and understanding instruction they will come through with flying colors in com- petition with the forced-feeding tactics used on the hapless Soviet youth. I have the highest faith in the young people who now walk our halls, just as I am very proud of our past modern teen-agers who are now fine citizen members of the Du- Pont High Alumni. QS lf' Mind Mrs. Clifton Scherer has taken over the job of school secretary. There are many tasks that have to be performed by this petite lady. Taking care of school records, filing, and having charge of the book stores keeps her busy throughout the day. Mary Whitlock, Susie Kidd, Lora Harless, Karen Franklin, Nancy Meadows, Nancy Dean, Sandra Johnson, and Connie Hitchcock are all oiiice assistants in the principal's office. They help Mrs. Scherer keep the office in tip-top condition. These future secretaries find that publishing and distributing the announcement and absence sheets, answering the phone, keeping the files in order, and running errands are only a few of the duties to be performed by a secretary. 9 Deans Prove Most Helpful MRS. VIOLET CAMPBELL, Dean of girls, has a busy schedule to fulfill. It includes giving advice and being counselor to the girls. She seems to always be around to lend a helping hand when it is needed. Her guidance is always welcomed and appreciated. The office assistants who aid Mrs. Campbell in her daily tasks are Gardia Taylor, Barbara Haddad, Julia Hitchcock, and Sandra Lancaster. Some of their routines are filing, writing excuses, and general office work. The deans' office keeps Mrs. Campbell and these girls busy throughout the day performing their duties and assisting both new and old students. 10 In Giving Advice and Guidance .xit l The Dean of Boys, MR. HARRY DOUGLAS, is a familiar person to the boys at DuPont. Not only does he help the boys with their school problems, but he is willing to give advice on any personal problems that may be bothering them. X fz., ..., 1 : Mr. Douglas is very fortunate in having these girls to assist him in any work he may have to do. They are Bonnie Dawson, Genia Berrier, Sara Norman, Linda Lancaster, and Johnna Lynn Jackson. Some of the girls' routine duties are filing, answering the phone, writing out absence and tardy excuses, and running errands. As you can see, being an oflice assistant is no easy job. ll Victor Asself Tom Boss-ie Erma Brooke Twila Brown Violet Deem Campbell Faculty Victor Asseff: B.S. They also contribute their free time at Christmas in helping with filling the gift baskets. Seated are Earl McCartney, Earl Barker, and Coy Fultz. Standing are Irving Brown, Grover Melton, E. W. Peterson, and Delmus Bowe. The camera managed to catch Ellis Hunley, Noah Phillips, Jack Nutter, Ed Brown, and Melvin Brown, head custodian, during one of the few times they are not busy dust- ing, sweeping, and cleaning the halls and classrooms. These people are all well-known figures around the school. I6 V 1 gg ia' A Q 'Q sf J 1462934 Q yr ,mi W 1 A 'W' ffwwe MH '.f iyfie fff . It seems that the righteous citizens of Dodge City want to run Kitty and her dancing girls out of town, but Mr. Dillon and Chester are trying to persuade her to stay. The presentation was produced and directed by the senior class under the super- vision of Mary Dempsey and Wilma Seabolt. Judy Hoffman, Brenda Sullivan, Kay Winfree, and Carol Travis added some beauty and color to the Senior Assembly in their fancy costumes. They played the parts of dance hall girls in the western skit presented by the members of the senior class. 40 ,JPL t W . n 'S Q K AO as F' . , H he Li f-P J L1-A Cr. 1' ZA is tl- yi ' l 1 I. 1 I X ' Qjfff ,argl I Il- nv 5 -1 ,-- AL , i'I. we C A N I A' 1 z ,. 1'- rn 7. 7: ,L If - ft fr f-' - ,, W U . , tl A WA I ' 1,4 75 in ' A is 'g -P I I D 1 'bn ,4 1 . These lovely la- dies and many others added more beauty to the decorations and theme of the Prom which was Fantasyland. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the fes- tivities of Fantasyland and the delightful music of the Colonel's orchestra. Nancy Meadows, Billy Blanton, Judy Thompson, Fantasyland Paris Hudnall, Diane Campbell, and Tommy Gay survey the decorations and the other students while seated at their table, which was reserved for them earlier that evening. Before entering the dance, these stud- ents, Wilma Seabolt, Charles Hall, Carol Travis, Larry Valentine, Judy Hoffman, and Dickie Holliday shown at the bottom had to present I. D. cards. Mr. Garrity and Mr. Gillum greet the students as they check their identification. sth' Theme of Prom Some of the music that Nancy Meadows, Billy Blanton, Diane Campbell, Tommy Gay, and others danced to were Stardust and Nearness to you. As the music floated throughout the dec- orated room of flowers, it seemed to entrance the couples into the Land of Fantasy. Jimmy Cook and Kay Winfree seem to be having such an enjoyable time at the Prom that they could dance all night, while behind them Larry Edwards, with his date, seems to be seriously considering the idea himself. Perhaps it is the combination of good music, beautiful decorations, and lovely girls that gives them such a dreamy feeling. Richard Holliday and Judy Hoffman pre- sent some fancy steps to the tune, Jim Dan- dy, one of the many songs played by the orchestra that memorable evening. The beautiful decorations seen in the background were arranged by the Junior Class earlier that day. Bottom Left-Mr. Wendling, a rep- resentative from General Motors, gave a special scientific assembly in March. These new members, Patricia White, Jean Ad- kins, Eddie Powers, Nancy Mead- ows, Johnna Jackson, and Nancy Rice, were selected on the basis of character, scholarship, service, and leadership. Top--Fred Sapp, Howard Landers, Roger Riddle, John Dixon, and Gary Frame participated in the annual Band Minstrel by giving a rendition of their version of the Can Can. Mid- dle-Helping' with the Gift Baskets are Nancy Rice, Jean Adkins, Wilma Seabolt, and John Siders. To raise money for this good-will drive, a spe- cial assembly was produced by the Sophomore Class. Shown obviously en- joying the cold day and the snowball fight are Jim Cooke, La rry Ledsome, Cotton H u n t e r, Brenda Sullivan, J a n et Thomas, C o n n i e Hitchcock, Kay Winfree, Karen Markham, and Monte Dillon. Brenda Sullivan is showing Mr. Carson and Mrs. Jean Smithers the portrait of her- seif and the two comic strip characters, Steve Roper and Mike Nomad. The portrait was drawn and presented to Brenda after she was chosen Miss Kanawha Majorette' by Bill Overguard, creator of the comic strip, Steve Roper. Mr. Carson is the band di- rector and Mrs. Smithers is the dance instructor for the majorette corp. Memories These seven young la- dies, Pribble Schoolcraft. Rosemary Allen, Helen Hiner, Lora Cotter, Nancy Meadows, Wilma Seabolt, and Kay Winfree, were chosen by the Senior Class to compete for the coveted title of Miss Du- Pont. They are anxiously awaiting the final decision of the Dul'ont-Clendenin Homecoming Game, to be told later that night. 1.1 Q to Ni gl! 'L C x p 5' 1957 - 58 Standing in the center are Larry Blackburn and Nancy Leadmon, who were chosen king and queen of the Junior Carnival. Other candidates were Bill lleardortf, Sandra Lee, Janet Stone, Mike Al- bert, Kay Garten, Frank Ad- kins, Gardia Taylor, Nellie Shoemaker, and Mike Wolfe. All the candidates are mem- bers of the .lunior Class. I Brenda Leadmon, Kay Win- free, Jo Ann Davis, and Sue Brown smile for the judges as they dance to Blue Skies, Steam Heat, and Fancy Pants. They and the other major- ettes work on their routines weeks ahead of time in prepar- ation for this big night of the 1957 Kanawha Majorette Festi- val in Charleston. Dul'ont had two big winners in the Festival. Brenda Sulli- van, who was chosen Miss Kanawha Majorette, and Lar- ry Lawson, third place winner in the boys' twirling contest. Richard Holliday and Tom- my Holbrook are shown here as they participate in the Band's annual Minstrel. The entire band takes part in the minstrel. Lawson was Mas- ter of Ceremonies. Some of the outstanding entertain- ment was a routine by the majorettes, comedy by the endmen consisting of chicken throwing, egg-throwing, and biting a cat's tail. The theme of the Minstrel was Robert E. Lee. The show took place on the deck of this imaginary Mississippi show- boat. LITHOGRAPHED BY JONES PRINTING COMFAN' cI-IAnLEs'roN. WEST VIRGINIA
