The purpose of a diary is to keep a complete record of the day's events in writing. The purpose of a yearbook is much the same - a record of the school year in pictures and writing. Therefore, I have chosen as the theme for the 1957 DuPontian, The Diary. ' The teenage girl illustrated on the division pages throughout the book represents you. Her activities, her dreams, and her ambitions are much the same as yours. To the underclassmen who have future years at DuPont, study. hard and get the most enjoy- ment you can out of each day, so that each year may be the best yet. Finally, to the seniors, whose record is nearly complete as far as DuPont is concerned, may the future pages of your life be filled with results from the determination and ambitions expressed in the pages of this - your yearbook. 2 '8.8.l-I X 'T Dedlcatlon Faculty Classes Orgamzatlons ACIIVIIIES Athletics Adv ertlsmg Advert user s Index ,. DOUGLAS To Mr. Harry B. Douglas, teacher, coach, and now Dean of Boys of DuPont High School, the Senior Class and Staff of The DuPontian are pleased to dedicate this edition of the Annual. For his guidance and building of fine manhood and good sportsmanship during his career as coach, we are grateful, and we are equally grateful for his eternal interest in the boys and girls of our school. We feel quite fortunate to have him in the Dean's office. Here is wishing you many more happy years at DuPont High School. 6 Pl! 'T- 5 IIILEI -1'-':' ' 2 3 III! I, ls Cui' Principa Dear Diary: Should I buy my school an- nual, the DuPontian, this year '? Dear Pupil: Should you? You lucky fel- low! Bend an ear! Your Yearbook is the history of the years educational and social activities at DuPont Iligh, told completely in story and picture. It is a personal record of you, your gal, and your pal. As a source for proof of graduation, of extracurricular services, rewards for academic honors, your annual is indisputable evidence. And those pictures of pony tails and crew cuts will be something to bring out to amuse grandchildren when babysitting. It will be a renewed pleasure each time it comes off the shelf. To you who spent hours of labor and days of fear of that deadline, this will be an extra pleasure. The day the Bulletin announces the DuPontian is out, few of the crowd will remember to toss you staff- e1's a nice job. But one can feel in the pride and excitement of the rush for autographs, a silent satisfaction in a job well done. So pupils, staff, and adviser, believe me, the record you have etched on paper, will be a lasting remembrance of the few blue days, but the many, many happy hours in the halls and fields of Du- Pont. Sell the old farmplace! Let the house burn down!! But save that 1957 Du- Pontianlll 'M-an The job of our school secretary, Mrs. Margie Lobuts, is a very hectic one. Among her duties are those of keeping the books and making out transfers for students who are moving. She is also in charge of the used and new book store. Mrs. Lobuts, along with her assistants, keep the office humming amid a myriad of tasks. The office assistants pictured below are Lora Cotter, Phyllane Collins, Juanita Dixon, Wilma Seabolt, Nancy Meadows, Mary Douglas, Betty Jarrett, and Karen Beck- ett. The announcement and absence sheets are published and distributed by these girls, files are kept in order, and phone calls are received. They volunteer their time and receive no academic credit. 9 Deans of Dupont Perform Various Duties sg Our dean of girls, MRS. VIOLET CAMPBELL, seated behind the desk that almost every girl at DuPont has stood before, at one time or another, for advice and guidance. Through her many years as dean, she has earned the respect of hundreds of girls who look to her as a friend and counselor, Who can help in solving their everyday problems. These are some of the girls who assist Mrs. Campbell by running errands, answering the telephone, writing tardy and absence excuses, and helping new students to enroll. They are Stella Durham, Barbara Asher, Thelma Eggleston, Glenna Ambrose, and Kathy Runyon. 10 Mr. Douglas has many efficient helpers in his first year as dean. Shown above do- ing typing and general office work are Nancy Meadows, Carole Berrier, Judy Stevens, Becky Rhea, and Mitzie Whitten. Occupying a new position at DuPont this year is MR. HARRY DOUGLAS, dean of boys. After spending eighteen years as coach at DuPont, Mr. Douglas has become a well qualified and experienced man in dealing with boys and their problems. It is the hope of the students that his face will become as familiar in Room 115 as it was for so many years on the football field. 1 4 ll i- ' R ? Wilma was chosen in her junior year to get experience for the task ahead of her next year. Learning to use proportion scales, determining amount of copy to be used, writing copy, and arranging layouts, are among the preparation for editor. Business matters were kept well in hand by Business Manager, Jean Faulkner and Assistant Business Manager, Judy Blake. They gave the girls on the subscription staff homerooms in which to solicit subscriptions. Theirs was the intricate job of keeping all DuPontian finances in order. Much time was spent at school activities this year by our DuPontian photographer, John Sleeman and his two assistants, Carl Sizemore and Aubrey Cormany, snapping the pictures that were to be used in this edition. There are many intricate parts of a camera that these boys must know how to adjust for the perfect picture. Some of the Student Council's promotions include the operating of the school supply store, providing a chair committee for assemblies, sponsoring the Christmas Gift Basket Program and the TB X-Ray cam- paign. They were also responsible for lockcr clean-up and American Education Week activities. A student handbook, The Guidepostf' and the student direct- ory, The Panther Roll Call, were major publications issued during 1956-57. The predominating project of the Stu- dent Council was to complete the land- scaping project which was started several years ago. The project was co-ordinated by the council and supported by the entire school. One representative from each Junior and Senior High homeroom was chosen to attend regular Monday morning meetings and inform his homeroom of the business transacted there. The active committees who took care of special phases in Student Council work were the Building and Grounds, Program, Citizenship, Lost and Found, Social, Ways and Means, Public Relation, and Publicity committees. He start- ed his career at Oceana High School in the fall of 1929 after his graduation from Davis and Elkins College that same year. When Mr. Douglas stepped down after the current football season, the ranks of the Old Guard in West Vir- ginia coaching was reduced to only three or four who have had 25 years of service. ll? Gene Harmon C735 makes good yardage as Jerry Mcllaniels blocks out Barhoursville defender. DUPONT DEFEATS BLACK EAGLES On October 12, the Panthers traveled to South Charleston where they won their opener, a thriller, 14-13. DuPont made the first score midway in the second quarter, but the Eagles wasted no time making a touch- down before the intermission and again in the second half. With just minutes to go in the game, Bob Stanley went 26 yards around right end to tie the game. Charles Smailes kicked the pigskin through the up- rights, making the score 14-13 in DuPont's favor. PIRATES ROUTE DUPONT DuPont went down in defeat for the first time to a strong Barboursville team 20-O. A cloudburst before the game made the play- ing pretty rough. The Panthers, controlling the ball very little, found it tough to score with the pigskin staying in the possession of Barboursville for nearly three quarters. DuPont didn't start clicking until the final period when fullback Harlan Flowers ripped off some nice gains, but the clock halted the Panthers on the 14. Irish 27-7 on September 21. DuPont scored early in the game as Bob Stanley went 18 yards around left end for the touchdown. Charles Smailes and Joe Gregg both scored during the first half to make it 18-0. March- ing 45 yards in the third period, DuPont got its fourth and final touchdown when Gene Harmon went around left end from eight yards out. PANTHERS FALL TO NITRO The Panthers found the going pretty rough as they come out on the short end of the score 27-0 at Nitro. Doing most of the damage for the Wildcats was Bob Linders who made most of Nitro's yardage. DuPont was hampered due to injuries of several players. Nitro had 10 first downs to Du- Pont's 9. MONTGOMERY SURPRISES DUPONT On October 5 the Montgomery Grey- hounds traveled to DuPont to beat the home team 28-0. Montgomery scored twice in the first period, once in the second period, and again in the final stanza. Pat Mulligan and his pinpoint passing provided for the down- fall of the Panthers. Gene Harmon C733 and several unidentified lan thers stop Catholic ball carrier. Neal Halstead hits the secondary against Cath- olic as Frank Pontier CHD is about to make the tackle. Dl'PONT IS CRUSHED BY ST. ALBANS DuPont played host, and a good one at that, to the strong-studded defending State Champs of 1955. From the moment Danny Alexander took Jerry lVIcDaniel's opening kickoff 86 yards to score, it was mostly the lied Diagon's game. t'l,l'INDENlN SQUEEZES BY DUPONT The Vlendenin C'ardinals played host to IJuP4znt on October 19. Clendenin saw the light first as they scored in the closing min- utes of the first half. DuPont, giving the favored Cards all they could handle, pushed over a touchdown in the fourth period. Bob Stanlry made the lone tally. DUNBAR TIES DUPONT DuPont journeyed to Dunbar to be tied by a favored Bulldog eleven. The Panthers got off to a good start as Eugene Harmon dashed 631 yards on the second scrimmage play of the game. Joe Gregg on a one yard mark scored IJul'onts second tally. DuPont went into the halftime with a 13-6 lead but the Charles Smailes C503 breaks loose for a long gain against St. Albans. Bill Fleck and Gene Harmon smotherna Mont gomery ball carrier as Jerry Mcllaniels C60 rushes in. Bulldogs hammered away during the second half. The Panthers allowed them one touch- down to tie the game 13-13. HERD THUMPS PA NTHERS On October 31 DuPont played host to the Elk Herd of Elkview. DuPont received the opening kickoff and on the third play from scrimmage Elkview intercepted a Du- Pont pass and quickly scored putting them ahead for keeps. It wasn't until the last period that, through the maneuvering of Gene Harmon, Bob Stanley, Joe Gregg, and Jerry McDaniels, the Panthers scored. DUPONT IS TOPPED BY PIONEERS In the final game of the season for both teams, DuPont lost the Battle of the Bridge to arch-rival East Bank 26-O at Cal- vert Field. After a scoreless first period East Bank tallied two touchdowns before the intermission and two more during the third stanza. The rugged Pioneer line held Du- Pont to 99 yards.
