We searched deep into the dark corners of our minds and came up with the intriguing title, Fairyland, as the theme for the 1956 DuPontian. As we peek into Fairyland, we shall see the enchanted castle - DuPont High School - and all of the little creatures and elves - students at work and play - busily engaged in a never ending round of activities. We shall share their hopes, their dreams, their accomplishments. Quickly let us look into the magic ball before this cyclorama of events passes into oblivion and the land of yesterday. 2 il? -ea X 1 X I 2 W M X 4:1 A Dedication ....,. DILLER The Senior Class of 1956 wishes to dedicate this issue of The DuPontian to Mr. Harry M. Diller, who has become a definite part of the tradition of DuPont High School. Although his actual class work is spent with boys in his shop, nevertheless, both boys and girls and faculty alike call on Mr. Fix-it for.help with everything from a major repair job to a broken shoe heel. For this and for his willing guidance, we gratefully salute our friend, Mr. Diller. 4 Room 29 Q 5' if ,Q 'iw is ul fW Fa lty Qur Principal In doing a bit of writing for the year- book that has as its theme, Fairyland, one runs into quite a problem. I wish to present a strong feeling that the present-day school has more wonders than any fairy would have whispered to your parents in the happy days of the past quarter century. Our students take for granted things that their parents doubted were practical. I am no Grand- Dad, yet I can recall when the radio was a crude playtoy. A set of earphones dangled from one's ears, while you twisted some dials to get the most awful squeals and yowlings, with a splattering of music and voices. Some opined it would never catch on. Nowadays, in your study of Com- munication and Transportation, more Fairy Doings are discovered. Dad and Mother did their courting under the watchful eye of The Man in the Moon. If the Fairies continue to weave their magic spell over engineering design, your children may be doing their sparking on Mars and honeymooning on the Moon. 6 The wife has been freed by the magic wand of electricity that washes and dries, scrubs and fries, kills germs and flies. All her drudgery goes down the drain. So it goes in the Fairyland of everyday affairs. What about those other sprites that infilter our dreams and pester our aspir- ations? Most faculty members deplore the daydreaming student. But who is to say that the occasional out-of-bounds attention is not the same dreams of youth that brought Lindbergh into the air, and Edison to light the world. Always, the thoughts of Youth are long, long thoughts. And the good Fairy that guides the thinkers of our high school boys and girls will be quite happy when she totals the score for today's DuPont High. We believe they have learned that a Fairyland is wonderful, but only those who combine hard work with dreams will be able to live it again and again in the passing years with pride as well as pleasure. Mr. E. F. Garrity Principal of DuPont High School Secretary Marjorie Lobuts Top-This petite blonde, whom you may think is one of the students when you pass her in the hall, is our school secretary - a very efficient one, too, we might add. Mrs. liobuts has quite 21 job taking care of school records, transcripts, bookstore sales, two daily announcement sheets, and the financial books. liottom-There are eight office assistants that Mrs. Lobuts describes in one sentence, They are courteous, attractive, efficient, and helpful. The girls pictured are Rebecca Munneke, lluth Spradlin, Barbara Blanton, and Nancy Boseley. 7 K. ki v . KZ l f nj K , Counse ors at Hand XMCVW Lip A fa 5 l DEAN FRANK BLACK Lunch! The only time Mr. Black can take from his regu- lar duties in an average day to relax. During this time he can forget about the boys who skipped Study Hall last period or the fight on the school grounds he had to break up. But there is a better side to his job. There are those who come to him for sound advice about their future, or prob- lems of the present. Even though he is a busy man, the results of his time and effort are admired by everyone. DEAN VIOLET CAMPBELL Our Dean of Girls has many jobs inside of one. Her work takes care of the girl who sud- denly discovers that she has forgotten her money for the T.B. X-Ray or pay movie as well as the girl who looks to her for the motherly advice she can't get at home. Even though her office occupies but a small space on the first floor, her tasks are certainly not limited to this space. The girls at DuPont High School are appreciative of this job well done. A -L--H 3- F0 Nam-y Dent, Vai-olyn Deardorff, Nancy Kuhn, Anna Ruth Sterne, and Glenna Ambrose :wt as Mrs. Czimplwlls right arm. These girls are always there to help carry out her many chores. They are kept busy answering the telephone, typing, looking up schedules, and running errands. The drains' office may be small, but it houses a large number of girls, all who work torn-ther to assist thi- deans in every way possible. Some of these busy girls are Wanda Young, Mary Givens, Wanda Kessler, Edith Taylor, and Shirley Hill. 9 a Lljfl LX fb-5' VUL 0- lybi Ck., ' A'l'lvk.Li,- S1 1 , N' J . The Student Council started a landscape project to improve the school campus, which will take about five years to complete. They were also active in the co-govern- ment Safe Driving Program with Jane Price and Gary Spencer participating in panels. The Student Council proclaimed February 6-10 Twirp Week. Its purpose was to give the girls the opportunity to perform common courtesies and duties the boys usually do, such as asking for dates, and carrying their books. Lyceum programs, a polio movie, and the T.B. X-Rays were also sponsored by the Council. They partitioned the Student Coun- cil room into sections, filled forty-five Gift Baskets, and served refreshments at faculty meetings and to the players after basketball games. SR. Chorus Presents Perhaps the most important activ- ity of the Senior High Mixed Chorus this year was The Sunbonnet Girl, an operetta, presented March 16. It was the story of Susan Clifton, an orphan, who was left in the hands of a penny-pinching couple. When a music contest was conducted in the Village, Sue entered, after a good deal of trouble, and won the scholarship. Carol Parry played the leading role as The Sunbonnet Girl. Six students represented DuPont in the State Chorus held at the Munici- pal Auditorium in Charleston, April 6. Participants were chosen from vo- cal students in high schools through- out the state. C. during the Cherry Blossom Festival. Through the financial and moral support of the Du- Pont High School Boosters Club, ninety-two band members and eight chaperones made the four-day trip in three chartered Grey- hound busses. Besides participating in the National Cherry Blossom Parade, band mem- bers visited various places of interest and had their picture taken on the steps of the Capitol. The band and majorettes took part in the Kanawha County Majorette Festival. Under the able leadership of Miss Biddy Keeney, majorette captain, and Miss Maralu King, assistant majorette captain, the majorettes 76 brought back the participation trophy. Sid- ney Atkins was third place winner in the Miss Kanawha Majoretten contest and Dora Thorn won first place among the girl twirl- ers in Kanawha County. On December 9, the band held its annual minstrel, proceeds going toward sending the band to Huntington for the state band festi- val in the spring. The interlocutor again this year was Keith Clarke. Supplying the comedy were the endmen, Tom Mason, Gary Spencer, Tommy Holbrook, Richard Holliday, Glen Taylor, and Carl Dabney. The majorettes were very convincing with their performance of the Baby Sister Blues, while Richard Jarrett and Gordon Casto staged a hair raising wrestling match. Butch Deardorff was the only returning letterman. Lack of height was the determining factor in the Cubs losing so many games. They lost six games by one or two points. Butch was the high point man for the sea- son with 119 points, followed by Sammy Martin with 89 and Buddy Akers with 73. Jimmy Berkhouse, Mike Albert, and Chuck Sword played outstanding defensive ball. The Cubs will be Without any lettermen re- turning next season, but several boys have had a good bit of experience and the prospects for more height looks good. Coach Giannakis is to be commended for the good job he did his first year at DuPont. 120 DuPont 28 ..rie.......i.........r.ee.......r South Chas. 46 DuPont 30 ....... ,,,...,..i.,,.... Cedar Grove 46 lleardorlf scores against South Charleston Swords drives in for a lay-up Dornick takes a set shot The DuPont Cubs took an impressive victory over their biggest rival, Midway, in the last few seconds of the game with the final score of 21-19. No one doubted who the winner would be since Midway so far was un- defeated, and D u P o n t had not won a game. Rivalry is very keen be- tween the schools. This is one game in which both the junior and senior high students get to attend. Midway beat DuPont last year by one point, and it looked as if they would do it again. Then Bill Deardorff made cheers ring through the whole school, when he made two free th1'ows and the Cubs won by two points.
