BELLE, WEST VIRGINIA cvzeaaafzcl WE, THE STAFF of the 1953 DuPontian, have chosen Building for the Future as the theme for this edition of the annual. The main reason for the selection of our theme was the fact that the years we spend in school are the building years of our lives. This year, a new annex was started on DuPont High School to alter the crowded conditions in the school. When the construction is completed, there will be four new classrooms and an all-purpose utility room. Bot- tom row: Leo Abston, Roger Williams, Tom Stamper. it it it The DuPontian, 1953 Good Season 0 THE PANTHERS, first game at South Charleston saw the Panthers drop their contest 13 to 0. A DuPont drive was stopped when Chittum intercepted Halstead's pass and set the Black Eagles' first touchdown. Their second touchdown came when Stamperis punt was blocked by S.C.,s end, who picked up the pigskin and scored. The extra point was good and the score stood 13 to 0. The Panthers' first home game was against Barbours- ville. In the first half the two teams battled up and down the field with neither team scoring. In the second half the Pirates scored twice in each of the remaining periods. Their first came when McKeown,s pass was intercepted and ran back to the Panthers, 30 yard stripe and in two plays, the Pirates went over for the score. Their second TD came on a 65 yard drive. After this touchdown the Panthers broke into the scoring column with a 39 yard TD pass from Whitlock to Crowder. Barboursville fin- ished the scoring in the last quarter with two TD,s. Final score: Barboursville, 245 DuPont, 6. The Panthers stopped their losing streak the next week when they met Charleston Catholic. A Panther drive was stopped on the Irish 8, but they came right back on a 70 yard drive with Williams scoring and the score was 6 to 0 at half-time. The Irish came back in the third quarter to score on a 70 yard drive. The score stood 7 to 6 in favor of Catholic until in the fourth quarter DuPont received a punt on its 39. Whitlock took it from there to the 35, where Williams scored his second TD. The extra point was no good and the game ended 12 to 7. The following Saturday afternoon, the Panthers were handed a 20 to 7 drubbing by Nitro. The Panthers' only TD came in the first period when Lett broke through for the score. A DuPont fumble was recovered by Nitro to set up their initial TD. In the third period the Wildcats marched 62 yards for a TD. In the final period, Stamper was the victim of a bad pass from cen- ter and was tackled behind the line for a safety. Later a Whitlock pass was intercepted and returned for the final tally of the game. The Montgomery Greyhounds invaded the next week only to be beaten 19 to 7. The Panthers scored in the first quarter on a pass from Stamper to Lett and again in the second quarter on another pass from Stamper to Whitlock. n the second half McKeown scored on a quar- terback sneak. The only Greyhound TD came in the last The DuPontian, 1953 period from 4 yards out and the score remained 19 to 7, favor the Panthers. The Panthers ran their winning streak to two wins when they played host to St. Albans. The Panthers dominated all play in the game winning 21 to 0. The Panthers took the kickoff and in a 58 yard drive Lett went over for the touchdown. In the second quarter they were given two points on a safety. The first time the Panthers got their hands on the ball in the second half they drove 67 yards with Whitlock going over for the score. Lett added the game's only extra point. The last score came when Ron Whitlock took the ball on a quarterback keep play and ran 80 yards for a thrilling climax to the scoring. The Panthers had an uphill battle all the way to defeat Clendenin and win their third straight. Clendenin took advantage of a short kickoff that was covered by a Clendenin player on the 39 yard line of DuPont. They scored from the 39 and their extra point was good. In the second period Stamper was hit while trying to pass and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Clendenin who turned it into a TD and extra point. The Panthers took the following kickoff and drove 71 yards with Lett scoring both the TD and extra point. In the third quar- ter the Panthers moved the pigskin 52 yards with reserve Belcher going over to score. The Panthers' last chance came in the last quarter where DuPont took the ball from its own S6 and with 50 seconds left in the game Lett scored the winning points. McKeown scored the extra point and the game ended 20 to 14. The Dunbar Bulldogs got even the next week by de- feating DuPont 14 to 0. Both Dunbar TD's came from passes, once in the first quarter and once in the second. They kicked both extra points. The next week the Panthers played Collins High School of Oak Hill, and beat them 12 to 7. DuPont took the kickoff and on the first play of the game from scrimmage, McKeown raced 48 yards for the first TD. In the second period the Red Devils got their first score by passing the oval across the goal line. In the third quarter McKeown made his second TD by returning an Oak Hill punt 55 yards for the winning points. The Panthers' traditional rival, the East Bank Pion- eers gave the Panthers a 25 to 0 drubbing to end the football season as far as the Panthers were concerned. This loss gave the Panthers a respectable 5 and 5 record.
