The Clipper stalT choose to picture this book in a musical setting because music suggests joy and happiness. Certainly the events depicted and described in this book were occasions that rank high on our Hit Parade of memories. We have endeavored to set forth on these pages some of the excitement and activity which was a part of every day life at DuBois High School. Our efforts would have been fruitless if we had not received much cooperation and inspiration from so many sources. Principal E. J. Mansell and the faculty gave us valuable aid in preparing this annual. VVe are indebted particularly to Howard Swisher, coordinator of the Clipperg to Miss Bertha VVheelock, art adviserg VVilliam Gratton, senior section advisory and to Donald Houck, sponsor of the solicitors. Our thanks go the technicians of the Gray Printing Company and to Ray Steinberg we are grateful for expert assistance in photography. Our sincerest gratitude goes to the many people who helped in any way, large or small, in producing the 1955 Clipper. VVe hope you enjoy it. We'll remember: Our terrific football team that lost only one game all year, the opener with Altoona-Gene Nlikelonis, our D.H.S. Express, who was named to the all-state first team for the second year by both the AP. and U.P. and named on the All-American fifth team-that our own Duke Burkholder was selected coach of the year--the pep rallies and send-ofifs which were led by our effervescent cheerleaders-the D made of white carnations presented to our school by the Punxsy cheerleaders. Our smart and talented band that presented such entertaining shows at football games and concerts-also the special instrumental group that played at basketball games and wrestling matches-the district band that was held at Reedsville, Pa., with Betty l.aBorde, Ginger Mottorn, Florence Pringle, Gayle Maier, Ronny Thomas, Bill Clark, Bud Thunberg, and Terry Plyler representing D.H.S. That the school received a face-lifting during the summer months: also new shrubbery and a new lawn was planted-that on the inside of the building, Principal E. j. Mansell's ofiice was renovated-that Mrs. Dorothy fupp joined the teaching staff and Samuel Gibson returned after his leave of absence-that Avis Hetrick replaced Norma Reister as secretary in the office. Our dances and parties held in the gym, hoe- down of the year was the Sadie Hawkins party-- room 16 won first prize for their Christmas decorations-Christmas vacation, then back to Seniors conducted campaigns for council semester exams. That Hi-Varieties took place at a dude ranch -Doxie Garski represented our school at the Flaming Foliage Festival-that the basket- ball squad, wrestling squad, and cheerleaders journeyed to Amityville, New Yorkvthat Ruth Dungey was our apple baking queen. That room 17, a money-mad mob, led in the charity drivesfthat Margaret Brubaker, Dee Curry, and Doxie Garski went to the State Student Council Convention in William Gratton's new red Buick, Penny four student council sent representatives to the first All-State Student Council Summer VVorkshop at Pennsyl- vania State University-that hillbilly music was played over the PA.-that the vocal concerts, plays, and assemblies were great. Those cool assignments, reports, exams, and term papers-that the boys' locker room was moved where the girls' locker room used to be- that crazy, mixed-up day when the tornado hit DuBois and we didn't know whether school was in session or not. Milton Brubaker won the state championship in the 138 lb. class in the finals at Pennsylvania State University-Robin Crytser and Ed Borrelli were district champs, Tom Carlson and jim Garski were runners-up in the district matches held in DuBois-Gene Mikelonis was named to the district basketball first team, AI Ranieri and Bill Rearick to the second, and Tom Allshouse received honorable mention. Then, the Coronation of Doxie Garski and Tom Carlson-finally, the Prom, Move-lfp Day, and graduation, concluding a wonderful year. officers and had chest X-rays during the year. BEAVER BAN Variety and excellent performances greeted football fans as the crack Beaver Band again displayed its talents to enthusiastic audiences. The Story of Cowboy joe, XYoman's VVork ls Never Done, Farewell to Mike, and the Veterans' Day program provided a wide range of entertainment to meet the individual tastes of each fan. Providing pep did not end at the close of the football season. A twelve piece swing band added to the spirit at basketball games and wrestling matches during the winter. Several of the Beaver musicians played for various civic groups. During the Christmas season, the band contributed a brass and wood- wind caroling group to the community. The Beaver Band performed at two concerts. Popular music, classical numbers, religious pieces and marches were played for appreciative audiences. Dance band provided the music for various dances for the school and for out of school groups. Selections in Hi-Varieties were also the work ol the dance band plus a few other musicians. Eight seniors were chosen to represent D.H.S. at district band, held at Reedsville in April. Band was not all work. Participating in Band Day at Pennsylvania State l'niversity was a highlight of the season. Also two picnics were enjoyed and a lavish banquet was given for the band, majorettes, and cheerleaders by the Beaver Band Club. From rags to riches SOCIAL LIFE Impeccahle, informal, and glamorous are adjectives that characterize the social events of the year. Dignity and splendor marked the coronation of Doxie Garskie as Miss D.H.S. and Tom farlson as Mr. IJ.H.S. on April 20. Lovely ladies clad in decorous gowns of pastel shades along with gentlemen in formal mascu- line attire assisted at the crown- ing of these two outstanding students who were selected by the student hotly for their service to the school. Against a glamorous and color- ful background, the juniors were host at the junior prom on May 13. A large gathering of students and friends enjoyed dancing. refreshments, and the sociahility of the occasion. Gaiety and informality reigned at the Sadie Hawkins party on Xovember 19, 1954. Decked in Dog Patch linery, the students swung their partners and enjoyed appropriate shen- nanigans. Prizes were awarded to Diane lfiscus and joe Kosilma and to Varol Nlcllonald and .lim Suplizio. Several groups in matching ensetnlmles were given group awards. fs? The junior prom, when the present seniors were host, was a thrilling occasion for all. After everyone left for home or social engage- ments following the game, these boys went to work again, taking down the canvas and storing held equipment until the next game. james Carns was the sponsor of this group. Through all kinds of weather the safety patrol boys were on duty to aid in parking cars at school events. They were under the sponsor- ship of Frank Malasky. In addition to the duties performed at football games, the parking lot was lined by the patrol before each school event. Courtesy, coolness, and speed were require- ments for the stadium ushers. These boys, under the direction of Paul Miller, had to seat the huge crowds that occupied the reserved seats at football games. Guard Bill Rearick early grabbed a scoring lead which he boosted to 17 before the final whistle. DuBois downed Philipsburg 70-46 on December 14, 1954. Rearick C109 and Al Ranieri 4169 broke into double digit scoring, but the results speak well for the rest of the team. Johnsonburg dealt the Beavers a 44-42 defeat in a heart-breaker. Gene Mikelonis' 13 points was the only bright spot in an otherwise dark evening. Beaver spirits again soared with the out- come of the St. Marys game, 57-35. This was the last ltltle-up game before District IX league play began. The great Kane Wolf died fighting when he tllel the DuBois Beaver. The 60-59 victory made all other teams in the league realize the llawkinettes was a team to watch. Clearfield gained a roaring 73-47 victory over DuBois. The Beavers held their own until hall' time when the superior height of the Bisons was too much for the Beavers. A thrilling 72-41 victory over Punxsy added lu the Black and lYhite's laurels. Mike added 23 points to his scoring record, high for the evening. Rearick scored 18. A second clash with Philipsburg resulted in an 80-40 victory for DuBois. The Nlountaineers were no match for the skill of the Beaver hard- woodmen. Amityville took the Beavers 65-54. In the second half, the DuBois five seemed to suffer from loss of pep. They were hitting the hoop for only 2072, all evening. Hard on the nerves but worth a few chewed fingernails was the 63-62 win over Brookville. Gene had another good night, scoring 27. Bradford's 69-49 win over the Beavers was a bitter pill to swallow. It was one of those nights for the Beavers. Nothing clicked. The Beavers trailed the first quarter, but they had the stuff to gain a second victory over the Punxsutawney Vhucks. The score was 66-56. Rearick, Tom Allshouse, and Ranieri each had 15 points. DuBois turned the table on Bradford with a tally ol 65-61. Things looked bad for a few seconds after Rearick fouled-out, but Nlikelonis sank four quick points for the victory. The Clearfield jinx still plagued the Beavers, this time on our own court.
