Nancy also was one of the two juniors selected to attend Miss D. H. S. at the Coronation. VVe had no musicians in the D. H. S. Band, but we did contribute Ruth Ann Wlalburn and Edith Thompson, two peppy lasses, as majorettes. These two girls could be seen strutting before the band and taking part in the band shows at half time during football games. Half time shows by the band reminds us of football and football recalls the undefeated, untied football season we had this year. Earl ROOM 19 Room 19's officers, pictured left to right, include Earl XYray, secretary, Mary Lou Spicher, president, and Donna Sykes, vice president. VVray was our contribution to the success of the team last fall. Earl also was a varsity member of the basketball squad. Les Zartman was a Black and XYhite wrestler from our room. Les was doing exceptionally well until injuries curtailed his wrestling activities. Any musical endeavor generally found Betty Trezise present, but most of Betty l.ou's ability was spent playing flute in Beaver Band. In the sale of activity tickets and Clippers our room ranked near the top. Pleasant memories of the days we spent as juniors with Mr. Paul Coront in Room 19 will be recalled many times by all of us. vv ggi- Members standing are Bob NValker and Fred Shenkle. Basketball was the favorite sport among our boys. Bill Rearick and Butch Raneri were on the varsity basketball squad and l.ynn Ruhl did an excellent job on the unior varsity. Sound minds and sound bodies are compatible. Vlith this as a guide the DuBois Area Joint High School has a well planned health and safety program. Each student receives a thorough medical examination in his junior year and a check up in his sophomore and senior years. Dental inspections are conducted periodi- ca y. Intelligent and careful driving is taught in the safety driving course that is a requirement for every junior. Passing a road driving test conducted by state police is needed for credit in this course. Protective equipment is standard for all sports. Health classes are required for each senior. Training in the care of the body is received here. A full and varied program of physical education is part of the school program for all students. Precedent was broken when the student council formulated plans to have a Mr. D. H. S. rule at the Coronation Ball along with Miss D. H. S. For the past eighteen years it has been customary to reserve this honor for some girl who has served her school well. The big sister and big brother idea was another new project of the council this year. New students at D. H. S. were given a big brother or sister who introduced the new students to the faculty and other students and helped them become adjusted in school. The Hoe-Down, something new in party ideas, had guests from outside of school present. This was the lirst event besides the prom where outsiders were guests. Other parties sponsored by the council were the get- acquainted party for sophomores and new students, the Sadie Hawkins party and the Christmas party and carol sing. The council supervised all elections, conducted a slave day and presided at assemblies. President Ren Showers of the councilg Susan Mansell, secretaryg and Shirley Kiehl were accompanied by William Gratton to the state meeting of student councils at Forty Fort in October. The entire membership of the council attended the Central County Convention of Student Councils at State College in April. Snappy precision, classy, smooth and even the best ever were adjectives frequently used to describe the Beaver Band this year. l'nder the able direction of Mr. Kenneth Bonsall, the band performed regularly at half time during the football season at both home and away games. Their demonstrations ranged from comedy routines such as Theres Une in livery Band to the more serious presentation on Club which feted the band and their guests will ever remain as a happy memory. Two concerts, one in March and the other in May, brought the l952-53 season to a close. These concerts were arranged to please the extremes in musical taste. Selections included ranged from Deep Blue through Vi'aggery For lYoodwinds to the. classical l2roica to the religious ln a Garden. Different sections Armistice Day at Punxsutawney. DuBois showed a lack of polishing and height but lost by a close score of 40-51. Johnsonburg handed a defeat to the Beaver's on Dec. 5, with a decisive 39-61 score. The cagers from the paper city were taller and got off to a faster opening. For the opener at home DuBois entertained Ridgway on Dec. 9. The visitors went over the Beaver's, 62-42, but the floormen were beginning to show better form. First victory came at Reynoldsville on Dec. 12. The game was close all the way to the last quarter. Then the Beaver's turned on the heat and racked up a decisive 64-49 victory. Second win for DuBois came when they journeyed to Philipshurg on Dec. 16 and stole a close one from the Mountaineers, 48-49. The Black and White won hack a victory from johnsonhurg on Dee. 18 by a 48-43 score. .lohnsonhurg was previously undefeated, but by good rebounding and shooting the Beaver's took them. Reynoldsville turned the table on jan. 6 when they handed the Beaver's a 53-70 up-set. The victors were very agressive all the way. This was quite a set hack for the Beaver's who had just won three in a row. The Red Raiders topped the Beaver's 50-39 on jan. 9. The Brookville cagers just couIdn't he stopped. This was the first of the two games Brookville took from DuBois during the season. The Beaver's were overwhelmed at Altoona on jan. 13. The Mountaineers from the railroad center had a slight lead throughout the game, but in the last few minutes they pulled ahead fast to take a 50-36 victory. The County Seaters rolled over the Beaver's at Vlearfield on jan. 16 by a 70-39 score. The DuBois team got off to a fairly good start, but fizzled under the pressure of the experienced Bisons, A faster Chuck team outscored the Beaver's, 73-49, on Punxsy's floor on jan. 23.
