October is that way: wild, unable to make up its mind. One day is midsummer, then comes spring or winter. Itas a fickle friend. It's the month of flaming maples and our old British friend Colin Jackson. It's the last day to drop classes and the beginning of rue. More good intentions are ruined in October than January ever sees. Sometime during the month the KA,s will be leading the campus in something - beer busts if nothing else, but usually athletics. The Mirror complained about poor student turnout for the inauguration. October must always prove out. GREEKS: AN EXPLANATION Blue jeans, grafitti shirts and keg beer are not the essence of Greekdom at Drury Col- lege. It is true that casual dress and good times are characteristics tamong othersj used to create an image of the fraternity man or the sorority woman - these are sterotyped images which frequently make Greeks un- popular with independents and administra- tions. , Greek Life, though, has meaning beyond the nearest T-shirt sale or disco bar. Fraternities have been a part of Drury Col- lege almost from the beginning in 1873. Even then they were sterotyped, symbolizing aris- tocratic prestige and idealism to others. But no one could deny that they set standards of conduct with an authority unmatched by oth- er campus groups: they influence. The Greeks' have always been involved in philanthropic projects: softball games, lolli- pop sales, fashion shows, settlement houses - many national causes are their pet pro- jects. Scholarship is also much stressed by Greeks: each organization sets a minimum grade requirement and awards are given to groups and individuals with high grade point averages. The Greeks have been criticized, distrusted- by those blind to their objectives and positive aspects. Yet the Greek system today is as strong as ever at DC. Greeks serve youths' great needs for fel- lowship. It is this fellowship which gives rise to strong, important, life-long friendships. Greeks are great. . . Linda Fendler, Editor llfifilikirlkilfilillliilikilfllfikilikifikik The InterFraternity Council and the Pan- hellenic Council are organizations which Greeks and the College sponsor. They are instruments of self-governance. They pro- mote self-study and self-help in solving prob- lems peculiar to the Greek system. -'f,'-1-v-m., N-1-uf'--p-.-f..v,-vv-1.-. .,- -.-- - S f Y , 5 Wi mi , .kyx-Af..-. S.. Our res- olutions must often pass through a hierarchy of faculty, administration, and trustees. Often Senate represents the students in just a token way - a vote on curriculum change for example. But even a token vote is an improvement over past practice. The Senate, for the most part, has the re- spect of the faculty. Many of their decisions do not need student approval, but yet they always bring their plans and decisions before the Senate. The opportunity to learn has been consis- '1 5' T 5- t3ulf' tently present in Senate. Our responsibilities are perhaps our best learning experiences. Senators gain a new respect for themselves and their school. Their responsibilities gener- ate a self-confidence which becomes invalu- able in later life. This has been the best Senate I've ever been associated with: they have taken respon- sible action many times - the increase in student fees, for example - and always after thorough study. Senator attendance has been above 95'Z:. Rick Smith, as Vice President, has done more than his share of work. I have sincerely tried to represent student attitudes, wishes, values to faculty and ad- ministration. Mirror and his pretty A.Ed. IN THE BEGINNING WAS - Some hack writer once said What's in a word? In the case of The Mirror: every- thing. Some wise old Drury professor 92-93 years ago probably said, Let it mirror the myriad activities at Drury College. It's done that through the years BUT it's also done much more. It has been the labora- tory experience to go along with the theory and wisdom of many fine journalism teachers such as Lois Wimberley. Through its pages have paraded the brain-children of some of our finest national and regional journalists. It has been diligent in its efforts to provide campus news. It has been the conscience of Drury - and that has demanded truculence and morality. It has sometimes provided strong models for the reluctant family that has been Drury. Drury College, The Mirroris a good reflec- tion on you.
