Virgle Fredrick, senior guard, was awarded the Most Valuable Player award. Beaten by Drury were such highly regarded teams as Morris Harvey, Eastern Michigan University, and Tennessee CA 84 U State University. Returning lettermen were Virgle Frederick Cco-captainb, Charlie Walker, Steve Hutchinson Cco-captainj, Roland Shultz, Ray Lavender, and Rick Caffey. John Weston, a senior trans- fer student, played a starting position. Prior to the opening of the season, the Panthers had won 51 of 56 league contests. And the Panthers are on their way to N.A.I.A. . Boasting a 13-1 conference record, Drury claimed a third straight M.C.A.U. loop title under Coach Bill Harding. Culver-Stockton College was in second place among the seven schools included in the conference in Missouri and lowa. After that victory the Panthers were seated the number one squad in Missouri District 16. The other teams ranked were second, Missouri Southern of Joplin, third, Rockhurst of Kansas City, and fourth, Culver-Stockton. Down went Culver and Missouri Southern with th e encouragement of maximum capacity crowds in the Drury fieldhouse. The Panthers were acclaimed District Champions. The reward earned was a trip to the Kansas City National N .A.I.A. Tournament, in which the best teams from across the nation compete. Four other squads also appearing in the Na- tionals have been previously defeated by the Pan- thers. Drury entered with an overall record of 28-6. en-..........................-.....-- Steve Hutchinson and Virgle Fredrick, senior co-captains of the team are ending a basketball ca- reer this season. Both men have received recogni- tion of their contributions to the athletic program when they were added to the Basketball Hall of Fame which was begun last year by Gail Fredrick, a past record-breaker. Virgle Fredrick, in his sophomore year re- ceived an invitation from the Olympics. Both Steve and Virgle have attained conference and district honors.
