FINIILAY -Dr. James F. Findlay has served as Drury's guide clown Drury Lane for over ten years. His unfailing wisdom and his intense interest in student's problems have been an inspiration as we have trudged down' the long and sometimes arduous pat-h of Drury education. His administration has seen an era of progress never before equalled-the growth of Drury Col- lege from a local institution to a college of nation-wide scope. Because of his constant efforts for the betterment of the college and because he has never lost touch with the students he so faithfully serves, this yearbook is dedicated to Dr. J. The first floor of the build- ing, the College Exchange, commonly known as the CX, serves everything from coffee to chocolate malts and ham- burgers. Mr. Ted Heinze is the manager of the CX. Upstairs is the Student Union Lounge, a spacious room with comfortable furniture, a piano, radio phonograph, and a smooth dance floor. It is here students meet to talk, dance, play bridge, listen to records or study.- All Student Union activities are controlled by a Board of Governors, composed of six students and the Director of the Union. The six fields of the Student Union are repre- sented by these six students. 'Mary Lou Deuchler, Recreationg Susie Holland, Serviceg Pat Perkins, Houseg Dan Dievaney, Socialg Jack Haymes, Pub- licity. and Tom Ford, Entertainment. Mrs. Charles O'Con- nell is the director of the Student Union. During the past year, the Student Union sponsored four all-school dances, all of which were great successes. There was square dancing every Thursday night and supper dancing each Tuesday. There were bridge lessons twice a week, dis- cussion groups each Wednesday and also a movie program which presented good movies about once a month. The Stu- dent Union boasts of a collection of 1400 classical records besides 100 or more popular records for dancing.. It sub- scribes to four out-of-town newspapers and six national maga- zines. The Student Union is truly a place of recreation, guid- ance, and learning. It is little wonder that its friendly at- mosphere makes it the most popular spot on the campus. 1', 'Y' N RCJUGERS . The sixty-five members, under the very capable direction of Professor A. A, Rockwell, presented their first formal concert of the year on December 1 in the SHS auditorium. A little on the lighter side was the third annual Concert in Swing which was given March 2 to an enthusiastic full house at the High School auditorium. Between concerts the band is kept busy playing for all college functions and recording for the fourth straight year through the facilities of a local radio station. It has a 15- minute weekly recorded radio program. In the early spring the band made a five-day tour of neighboring cities. The closing concert of the year was the third annual twilight series entitled Concerts Under the Maples which was presented in May. i 3 Aw... lite 71? 5 Left to rizht-Wayne Johnson, Rozella McDonald, Roland Robertson, Ralph Jones. The remainder of the tournaments, volleyball, basket- ball and softball, showed more technique and skill on the part of the players than in previous years. The character of the games was marked by great improvement as last year's v-eterans coached the 1950 rookeys. Each of these tournaments terminated in an All-Star-Runner-Up game. The most important prin- ciple is non-discrimination in the consideration of prospec- tve members. Any regularly enrolled student, regardless of race or religion, may be considered for membership on his own merits. Officially approved by the 'Student Affairs Committee on November 1-6, the group began active participation in campus activities. Their team of runners placed second in the annual Turkey Trot V DIKES began to prepare for Intramural Basketball and by the Christmas Holidays had won two and lost two in the - A bracket, and had won one and lost one game in the B bracket. The fraternity is planning a program for convocation and a float to be entered in the Homecoming Parade, February 18. The DIKE Fraternity and DIKE policy are here to stay, and Drury wishes them well. The Kappa Alpha Order was founded by four young ex- Confederate soldiers in 1865 at Washington College, later Washington and Lee University. The president of the col- lege at that time was the great leader, Robert E. Lee. It was under his leadership, character, and Christian mind that the ideals of chivalry and love of God was instituted into the Kappa Alpha Order. Although Lee was never a member of the order, he is considered its spiritual founder and all chapters today celebrate his birthday, January 19. The Kappa Alpha Order now consists of 72 chapters. Their colors are crimson and old gold. The flowers are the red rose and the magnolia blossom. Beta Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha was organized on Drury Campus in 1906. It was the first national social fra- ternity on the campus and has aided many young men during their four-year college life at Drury. Kappa Alpha members have been outstanding in the many activities offered at Drury this year. Sigma Phi Epsilon has grown steadily since that date and today ranks ninth in leadership and size among the nation's nationals. With over 100 chapters in the United States and negotiations under way for establishment of chapters in Canada, Sigma Phi Epsilon will be embodying in practice what its motto says by word: Holy Friendship Forever. The Sig 'Ep heart of pearls and diamonds, complemented by American Beauty roses and violets, and colors of purple and red, comprise the insignia of the fraternity. The Pegis Club was organized on February 27, 1949, by initiation ceremonies at Columbia, Missouri. In initiating these 16 men and making them members-at-large of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Missouri Alpha paved the way for the ceremonies of May 14, 1949, at which Missouri Delta of Sigma Phi Epsilon received its charter and thus became a full-fledged member of the Drury Greek Family.
