It develops insight and inspiration. It breeds ambition and enthusiasm. It incites to bold endeavor and heroic achievement. College opens the eyes to many worlds of knowledge and adventure. Laboratory and library, microscope and telescope reveal universes, old and new. But one of the finest offerings of the College to youth is friend- ships. On the College Campus, as nowhere else in the world, are born royal comradeships. Here, with no selfish interest, with neither mercenary nor political motive, but with perfect naturalness and spontaneity, are formed friendships, loyal and strong. Here, men and women, in wholesome companionship, together dream dreams and see visions. Here, unified by common interests and welded by Common aspirations, they build friendships as lasting as life itself. Among the varied gifts of the College, may Drury give to all her sons and daughters the rich endowment of choice friendships. THOMAS W. NADAL. WEISER Drury college should be justly proud that it has as its coach, Albert L. Weiser. He is a man who is liked by all for his great character and the unique way of accomplishing things which he undertakes. To no other factor can We contribute the excellent spirit and success of the team in the past few years except the untiring work of our coach. The greatest basketball teams in recent years have been turned out since Coach Weiser came to Drury in the fall of 1928. In other branches of athletics he has produced teams that are a credit to himself and the school. All the honors that he or his teams have obtained are certainly none too good for such a man as Coach Weiser. It is generally conceded that there has never been a coach at Drury college who has held the admiration of the entire student body as has Coach Weiser. We are sincerely hoping that Drury college will have Coach Weiser in the future. Page 7 3 ll use ' :sire li- 1931 3-4.4 Cheer leader XVILLIAM WEBB- better known as Bill,,' led Drury boosters through basketball and football seasons of pep and enthusiasm, reviving much of the old Drury Spirit. Without Bill, several of those extra-period basketball games might have ended with the Panthers holding the short-end of the score. The curly-headed little cheer-leader kept the spirits of, not only loyal Druryites in the bleachers, but those fighting on the court and gridiron, at the highest point. I DAQ QIX SO ' IESTEIQ, .1 193 , FRED LONG JOHN RICE With only four lettermen in school from last year, interest was sadly lacking in track. As a result, there were no dual meets scheduled, and all thoughts were given to intra-mural track. Paul Ray and Ernest Harris showed up particularly well and won the right to go to the state meet. Ray placed second in the discus and Harris was fourth in the two mile. The lettermen pictured here are men who have proved their worth in the past years. Fred Long, dashes, John Rice, quarter mile, Harold Stoneman, distance runs, and Jerry Handley, hurdles. HAROLD STONEMAN JERRY I-IANDLEY Page 84 so ' ESTIZIQD 1 193 ,-1.-.i.i.. .., Golf The great interest in golf in the city and the school alike prompted Coach Weiser to put out a call for candidates for a school golf team. After a thiry-six hole tourna- ment, Tom Woodruff, Dick Farrington, Garrett Hogg and Bob Nadal were chosen to represent Drury. A dual meet was held with Rolla, the Drury men being nosed out after a hard battle by the score of six and one-half to five and one-half points, on the course at Rolla. Then came the state meet. Woodruff and Farrington were chosen as entries. After thirty-six holes of trying medal play, the local boys won the championship. Woodruff was second to the medalist, Elliot of Westminster, with a score of 83-84, while Farrington had 93-89. Tennis Drury boasts of two of the most consistent tennis players in the conference, Bob Hyder and Harry Kime. The boys had tough luck this year, however, losing out to Rolla in the dual meet, and were beaten in their efforts to win at the State meet in May. With the four excellent courts, which Drury students now have access to, tennis should become a growing sport, and will without doubt in a few years be one of the major sports of the school. N 1 N v SCU' ESTIEIQ 93 Intramural Drury's intramurals have reached a most critical state. Complications have developed with varsity sports and some of the organiations on the campus took little interest in intramurals as they were conducted this year. A championship trophy for the greatest number of points scored in all the athletics, such as won by Delta Gamma Chi fraternity last season, was not given this year. Individual banners for the winners in each branch were given instead. Sigma Nu fraternity had things most its way this year, winning the awards for track and baseball, and losing the basketball championship to Theta Kappa Nu in a big upset. There was little interest in basketball. Theta Kappa Nu with Wheeler, Kime and Wilhoit leading the way, sprang an upset and defeated the Sigma Nu outfit by the score of I2-TI in the deciding game. The Sigma Nus, led by Sam Roberts, who accounted for twenty points single-handed, had a wrlkaway in track, scoring forty- three points, to their closest competitor, Kappa Alpha, who scored twenty-nine. Other organizations made only one official entry, and this because it was necessary to be eligible for baseball. The baseball tournament advanced to the second round with Theta Kappa Nu meeting the Independents and the Delta Gamma Chis tangling with Sigma Nu. Theta Kappa Nu and Sigma Nu, emerged victorious, by the respective scores of 14-6 and 7-5. Again these two frats tangled for a championship, this time the Sigma Nus winning, 15-IL As said before, intramural athletics have reached a climax. Although all con- cerned have not been putting their best efforts towards a successful organization, here's to better and more extensive intramurals next year! it Y 5 Page 86 ,X IQ X X ,ML -, Xi' .Y .W Wx A - 0 X Q 'ii-'IT XYFN w- 2 1. 1 . .. STARTLING NEW EVIDENCE INTRODUCED BY ATTORNEY SWIFTY DURST IN DIVORCE Picture Taken in Heart-Breakers Cabin Causes Big Furor-e in Co-urtg Only Handley Is Unperturbed New evidence was introduced today in the divorce suit of David Robertson against his wife, the former Naydene Cain, when Swifty Durst, attorney for the plaintiff, produced before the court a picture he took one evening during one of Mrs. Robertson's Wild escapades. I'm framed, the hysterical young woman screamed when the picture was shown the court. Not yet, but you soon will be, David spoke up grimly. The Picture Swifty Took Mr. Durst alleged that Naydene frequently was attendant at wild parties in Jerry Handley's cabin and declared that the picture should provc the charge con- clusively. He intimated that the presence of Willard Tucker and Norma Rhea Reeves was enough to prove the affairs wild ones not fit for any innocent married woman to attend unless chaperoned by at least half a dozen spinster aunts. When I slipped in with my camera, Swifty told the court, they were in a clinch. I had to separate them to take the picture. I wanted one decent enough to show the court, the dapper little attorney added modestly. Miss Reeves, who has been star witness for the defense, had had a flushed face ever since the trial began. Jerry Handley, her man-about-town, described by Swifty as a horncbreaker', and snake in the parlor, slept through the morning session. The judge twice warned him that his snoring must cease or he would be arrested for contempt of court. The debonair Mr. Tucker seemed slightly bored with the whole affair. Mr. Robertson asks restoration of his maiden name and a violin lesson every week as alimony. s0U'wlisTrl2 ,,,-,.,L,....-..-.i..i--. Shucks! Most of the other fellows made their hours oke. Perhaps the fact that you cut gov 28 times might have influenced Meador against you, but how anyone could flunk French! . . . I'11 bet you feel like smashing me for not writing sooner, but Spud Fadner insisted that we get in so much work that I had about two hours sleep the week before last and I've been catching up. Well, I had my first final yesterday. One down and six to go. But you don't care anything about all that, especially when there's news. Boy oh boy! Did we have some election this year. In the first place, the faculty got some haywire idea QI don't think anybody in school but joe Nadal understood it, and he didn,t like itj about the elections. They were going to do away with combines. It's about as easy to do away with combines as it is to believe that Drury will last two more years. Anyway, it was pretty much of a walk-away for the Kappa Theta Delta Pi's, at least in the two lower classes. But here's the dirt: The Sigma Nus crawled out of grass long enough to put the double x on the Delta Chi's in the matter of student body president. Well, you can't blame the boys up at 1360 for telling the snakes to go to, can you? And guess who was elected. Well, it was a fellow that'd been out of school the year before Qby faculty request, maybej. Heh, heh! There's the usual amount of puppy love on the campus. Bob Nadal and Sam Rob- erts are still chasing Evelyn Appleby. There are some that say Bob is THE B. F., but Sam has his following, too. Harold Wheeler has been chasing Thelma Rice around for quite awhile for maybe it's the other wayj. Jack Daniel and Thelma James are also carrying on the tradition. Morris West still thinks that none of the girls on the campus are quite good enough. The Theta Nus had their usual house party this year. Nothing much happened to dilute the spirits Did you hear the news about the faculty exodus? About nine teachers are taking indefinite vacations from Drury work next year. Welll miss ,em .... Dr. Wald is going to a position as dean of his Alma Mater. Nice, eh what? The Delta Chis are carrying on in the usual way. They haven't yet inveigled any national into offering them a bid. They must've felt cheap when the Tau Gams stepped into the national ranks. Well, old pal, I'l1 see you at S. T. C. this summer. I gotta make up for what Squir- rel's goin' to do to me. . . Page 147 Fixx S 0 ' :situ 193 Among tho Greeks IN WHICH IS WI-IISPERED SOME SENSE AND SOME NONSENSE Things have been rather quiet along fraternity row this year Qthat is, comparatively soj. With three of our Greek-letter organizations esconced in their new homes, scandal has been barred from the doors. The other five are just naturally good anyway. The Sigma Nus made a pretty rotten haul in rushing this year. Some say it was because Doc Freeman broke his jaw in early football practice, and didn't have a chance to say anything. The boys did achieve a diplomatic success in Bob Nadal, a social success in Garrett Hogg and a scholastic success in-well, let it go. The Delta Gamma Chis spent the year rushing around the campus following camera- man King all in preparation for ten minutes entertainment at a tea dance. As to rushing, they point the finger of pride at Moist, the most they ever took in at once. The Kappa Alpha boys had a rather hard time of it this year. Yeh! It just seemed as if they couldnit make a go of' anything. It may be that the tea served at their tea dance last spring didn't have the proper ingredients. And of those they did get-well, they lost about three of 'em after a few weeks. It seems a pity, too-just when Fuson was starting the process of education. Farrington has made a big hit with his instructors this year. I-Ie follows the social customs of calling just ever so often. I-Ie's probably afraid he'll wear his welcome OLIE. You might think we dislike the K. A.'s, but we donat. We prefer any group to the Sigma Nus. But then, so does everyone. The Theta Kappa Nus had a big year, quantitatively speaking. And, too, they had their annual house party. Our reporter was able, after a great deal of effort, to snap the picture seen on the opposite page. It was taken at Idlewild the morning after. We see next year's president, Mr. Ed Martin fEdgar to youlj, giving instructions as to gentlemanly conduct and Chesterfieldology to a group of freshman and Joe Embry. We had never believed in spiritualism before, but as A. Conan Doyle brought out, the camera sees more than the human eye. We'd hate to call any inanimate object a liar, but that looks like a halo over Joeis head. The Tri-Delts ran true to form, and pledged a number of gels they thought would do them good scholastically. That they were fooled doesnit make a great deal of differ- ence. Margaret Boyd was finally initiated, as was Daisy Edmonson. I suppose that took a great load off their minds. What hangovers they have to initiate next fall don't seem to worry them a great deal. Uncle Izaac's pawn shop Caddress unknownj had a sudden influx of bizness about the last of April. More money was loaned on articles of clothing than anything else. Our snooping photographer happened on a bunch of Tau Gams doing an exit fwhich ap- proached a Lady Godivaj. But the gals are happy. They finally scraped together enough money to go Kappa Delt and they are saving the old Tau Kappa Gamma sign to use as firewood next year. The biggest break they ever got was when their president got married. Saves a lor of embarrassment Qas to chaperones, we meanj. The Pi Phis rushed about eighteen social whizzes and two others this year and raked ,em into the chapter. In this manner, they did their bit toward winning the freshman election. Gifford and Cowell are carrying on the Pi Phi traditions of being just any man's women. After a great deal of persuasion, they showed Jarrett that sheid be in error if she wasn't in Arrow, so she came through just a little late. . . . . The Zetas seen on the opposite page have just finished singing their patronizing song, How'd You Like to Love a Z. T. A.? Winifred Cahill hasn't much room to talk after the house party, but she still sings. Our greatest grief is that Orvilla Shew- make sneaked away just as our cameraman showed up. f N byeqlvl 3' V I, ,.., VTV 2 : ,.4 I : fx 'Z .k.v . 35 f I R L XX X305 Y ' 'Z' x Dfgm , We Q V 5 A5 V7 9 v:-'-f ' ff N ,Z I i -- H J S 1 -LA j .WggA. 1.V. .yy aa XX 51lk 1 I X' Y V' I S ., 4 lvllzi if - h ' ' I ,rl ,gy F Q gp, M V X A A : 1 :I . fx ' '- ,, , ' V 7 , L Qx gl ' ' 'A w . 3 f 5 W 5 ' KSU? SCU' ESTEIQ 193 oroi n Studonfs Commoniar I BY EKHARD DRECHSLER, German Exchange Student It is nearly impossible to compare Drury or any other American liberal arts college with a German University. In Germany the common assumption is that the pursuit of knowledge is the funda- mental point in education and that the acquirement of knowledge develops personality. In America on the other hand it is thought that real knowledge can only be acquired after personality has been developed. , What system of education is better? That is a useless question. Is an apple better than a pear, or a pear better than an apple? It is just a matter of opinion. Each can make his own choice, but no one person can make a decision satisfactory for all.
