My dear Mr. Editor: Information is exceedingly desirable. The best way that I know of and the easiest way to secure information is to go to good schools and colleges. I have proven my faith by my works in that re- gard. I am a graduate of two colleges-Bethany College, West Virginia, and the Cincinnati Law School. My only son is a graduate of the Univer- sity of Missouri and the George VVashington University Law School. My only daughter was educated in one of the best private schools in Vklashington. Of course people can get information without going to school or college, but they would spend a great deal more time getting it and more work and effort. In getting information, schools and colleges are sort of labor-saving machines. I be- lieve in them. I consider it a great honor that I was made a Trustee of Drury. Your friend, tll ' rw Wh , CSCIIMYESTEIQ sdlgjxgg Q :mei K QV Rim X aj rQ,' 'A 7 4vqv gf'- ,.:. '- 'fb' ' - . .' ,.. i 1, 5- ' ,r f'S,,..... Avg! gSEQ7if9g5Cjm ' fiom WESTED illi 7 X Q--2 A Word From Drury's President One must be skeptical who can study Drury's condition and not see in its ideals, its held, and its position won and held among other institutions, a great future opening up before the college. From the beginning of its academic career it has held tenaciously to a grade of scholarship and to moral and spiritual values which after forty years are beginning to get for it an enviable reputation among educators and technical and professional schools all over the land. The fact that the number of bona fide college students has practically doubled in the last six years is proof that the institution is meeting the needs of students who live within the Held of the college. Such an increase cannot be cared for without a corresponding tax on the ability of the school to meet the needs. At the cost of a steadily increasing drain on its financial resources, the various departments of the cultural type of teaching have been able to meet demands up to this present, but in order to continue this work, aside from providing any addi- tional work, we are forced to enter into a campaign for 35001100 addi-- tional endowment which, when completed, will not only insure the present high grade of work in existing departments, but will make possible the addition of one or two more courses, such as domestic science, the need of which is apparent in the light of the number of requests received for such work. The opportunity which the college offers is in a sense to be meas- ured by the large body of Alumni who are now successfully at work in all parts of the world. To them the college looks for loyal sup- port of its scholastic and moral ideals so that the opportunity which was afforded to them as students may be offered to other young men and young women without prejudice. The Alumni have done nobly and the college is proud of them. In view of the present conditions and the efforts of all the friends of the institution to place it on a sound financial basis, we can con- fidently look forward to an increasing student body, a strengthened force of instructors, and a still larger place for the college than that which it now holds among the institutions of the state and nation. But whatever its financial progress, we hope for it at all times a steady clinging to those ideals, intellectual, moral, physical and spiritual which, more than any other one thing, have placed it in the front rank of colleges of its class. ,ffm- A IT.-im 'ra '5 .L,J...,UfiE?i ?fi?QKV'7' X Nj Tin' Halls, QRUUJ' l'icu'5 W Tu? N-KQQQAWM ' CSOIIXMESTED L oft ' -1- We at w i .ns J Football Resume The 1915 football season at Drury was not an unqualified success. The effort to schedule enough conference games in one season to give the team a chance at the state championship, hurdled the years when we had a team of championship caliber, only to succeed at a time when we had one of the weakest teams that we have had for several seasons. Although the team, handicapped by the absence of veterans, a large amount of new material, and a succession of reverses, did not win many games, it made a very creditable showing against the opponents. Opening the season with but three letter men in the lineup, the team started off auspiciously by defeating Marionville College 60-6 and Pitts- burg, Kansas, Normal 26-13. The next game with VVestminster, how- ever, marked the beginning of a long series of misfortunes which ended only with the blowing of the timekeeper's whistle at the close of the Thanksgiving Day game with Springfield Normal. Despite all adverse circumstances, the fellows on the team scrapped hard and clean and left a good basis for the 1916 team. The results of the season were as follows: October Drury 60, Marionville 6, at Springfield. October Drury 25, Pittsburg Normal 13, at Springfield. October Drury 0, NVestminster 7, at Fulton. October Drury O, VVashington U. 38, at St. Louis. November Drury 6, Rolla 26, at Springfield. November Drury 6, Willialii Jewell 16, at Kansas City. November Drury 7, Springfield Normal 15, at Springfield November Freshmen 32, Springfield High 7, at Springfield dwgegjit pie, ,,-' g,.,..,,Ufig22 ff'i?JQ'.i1E,I? 431 ' f -N J' M129 RUFFIN '16 C p 1 All M T I! NVith but one man back from the championship team of last year and with but little new material from which to choose, the outlook for a successful season at the beginning of the year looked anything but good. However, again under the coaching of Dan Nee a team was formed out of the scant material which for over half of the season made championship hopes run high. But at the beginning of the second semester, somewhat weakened by the loss of Con- nolly at forward, the team hit a slump from which it never fully recovered. This, coupled with inability to hit the basket at the necessary time, contrib- uted greatly to the defeats which the team suffered. But in defeat or victory the team displayed the Panther fight characteristic of Drury teams and never called a game lost until the Final whistle had sounded. Roberts at guard played a stellar game and was acknowledged to be the best guard in the conference. Cope, at guard, played a consistent game. XVetzcl, somewhat handicapped by his position at center, was off form this season but as a rule kept his man more than busy. Vifilson and Snavely at forward played fast, heady games, shooting baskets at times from seemingly impossible angles. Pierce, Carroll and Martin, substitutes, had but few chances to get into the game but when they did they made their presence known. Although we did not win the championship this year, we were awarded two places on the All-Missouri Intercollegiate team. The men winning this honor were Roberts as guard and W'etzel as center. ,fanuary 15. Drury -12, Pittsburg Normal l-1, at Springfield. January 20. Drury -ff-1, Maryville Normal 28, at Springfield. Out of ten games played four were victories for the Pantheresses, while the other six were lost by relatively low scores. The record of the games, how- ever, does not do credit to the playing of the team. Playing the brand of basketball that they did, they deserved better success than they had. As a rule the teams they played were bigger and more experienced, and thus had somewhat the advantage of them. It would be a hard proposition to pick any bright particular star from the six young ladies composing the team as they all played their par- ticular position decidedly well. MKQQQBWM T Choi WESTED ,T-,lillyfs Qfilmi-lil 1 M r Track Resume The track season of 1915 may be regarded as very successful. In fact, everything tended to make it so. For not only did we have practically all of the 1914 track team back, strengthened by the addition of sev- eral new men, but we also had all our meets, including a dual meet with Springfield High School, a triangular meet with Rolla School of Mines and Springfield Normal, and the State Conference meet on our own field. The first meet with Springfield High School, while easily won, served to show up the defects of the team. By the time of the Triangular meet the team had been so strengthened that after a hot con- test and a Garrison finish, the Panthers won with a total of 52 points as opposed to Rolla's 46 and Normal's 28. Hopes were raised by winning this meet for championship honors in the Conference meet. But when the meet was staged May 21-22, owing to accidents occurring to two of our best men, we had to be con- tent with second place, Xwlilliam Jewell taking First and Central Col- lege third. The prospects for a successful sea- son this year Chlay, 10161 as this goes to press, while not so good as last year, are very goodg as we have hark several point men, including' Rulilin, 21 weight man, llemetrius, za distance runner, and Garrett, a sprinter. Headed by the Student-body President, it consists of the two Deans of the College, one other faculty member, one member each from the non-fraternity men and the non-fraternity women, and a member from each fraternity and each sorority in school. Thus it is sought to give representation to every group in school. Its powers are merely advisory and it attempts to deal with the important problems of school life, to establish a closer relation between faculty members and students, to attend to matters of importance to the whole school, and in every way possible to further the best interests of the college. X -.UZ Satisfied From the day that, leading little crip- pled Jim by the hand, he appeared in the door of the shack, known as the office, he was called Satisfied He undoubtedly had another name, but no one took the trouble to investigate. Your wages will be eighteen dollars a month and board for you and the boy, said the boss. I'm satisfied, was the only remark. That night, after the hard day's work of cutting and piling the logs for ship- ping, the men in bunk house number eight were seated around their little stove smoking and talking. As a divergence of any sort was always wel- come toi these lumbermen, cut off from the outside world, Slowdown Charley attempted a conversation with the stranger, who sat a little apart, Jim by his side. Well, how 'ye like the work? 'Tm satisfied. Goin' a stay long? Can't say. How's the boy like the place? O, he's satisfied. In a moment more Slowdown gave up, and presently all went to bed. Before a week had passed, Jim had won the heart of every man in the camp. His tiny, wasted face, his pa- thetic eagerness to be of service to anv of them, brought to the surface the best qualities in every hardened lum- berman. And Satisfied was almost passionate in his devotion to his child. Toward everyone else he was indiffer- ent, neither giving nor asking favors, making friends with no one. But many hours of the long nights, when the pain was almost more than Jim could bear, Satisfied sat on the edge of the bunk, rocking to and fro,-the boy in his arms. When the weather was fine, Satisfied always carried Jim to the place where the men worked. There he would place the boy on a seat constructed in the lowest fork of a tree. And jim would sit quietly and happily thru the morn- ing, dividing his attention between the wild things around him, and the work- ing men. And always Satisfied watched him lest he should become tired and slip from his perch. One day he had placed Jim as usual and was at work near by. Morgan called to him to help for a few minutes at the big saw. Telling the boy to sit still, he went. But two squirrels, play- ing hide and seek above his head, com- pletely absorbed Jim, and he leaned out a little too far. When Satisfied returned, he saw an inert little heap at the foot of the tree. For a moment he was stunned, then, without a sound, he dropped to his knees and gathered the still body in his arms. As the men saw him pass on his way to camp, they dropped their work and ran after him. The nearest doctor was fifteen miles away. Twenty men volunteered to go for him. Satisfied, having placed Jim in the bunk, sat down on the edge of it. Not a word had he spoken . Not once, dur- ing that interminable wait for the doc- tor, did his eyes leave the drawn little 'Tim ' X N--2 face. Only once did Jim move, and then a sob came from his lips. Nineteen men stood behind Satisfied, their eyes, likewise, fixed on the boy. And, then, the doctor came. The men went outside while he made his exam- ination, only Satisfied remaining. A chorus of subdued, but eager, voices greeted the doctor's reappear- ance. 'WVill he live? The doctor hesitated a moment before replying. Well, there's just a bare chance. That night the men slept on blankets, spread outside the door. Until dawn Satisfied sat motionless at his post, and then he roused only enough to drink the cup of black coffee, which the cook brought him. VVhen the doctor returned in the morning, he made another and more thorough examination. This time he led Satisfied outside where the men were gathered. His statements were concise and to the point. The boy has one chance in a hun- dred. And that chance can be given only by taking him to Michigan City, to the specialist. Satisfied dropped his head in his hands. The day before, he had drawn his first wages, eighteen dollars. This was barely enough to pay their railroad fare to Michigan City. Slowdown Charley whispered some- thing in the ear of the man nearest him. As this murmur ran around the circle, each man drew forth a sealed, white envelope and poured its contents into Slowdown's hat. This they gave to the doctor. The next morning, an improvised am- bulance, carrying besides the patient, a hollow-eyed man and a doctor, left the camp. For two weeks the camp waited in agonized suspense. They worked fever- ishly, and at night smoked in silent groups. Then early one morning, while they were at breakfast, Satisfied returned- alone. Somehow, there was not much surprise. Every man, deep in his heart, had felt it would be so. As he came toward the shack, his shoulders drooping wearily, the men left their places and came to meet him. In sympathy, their hands grasped his, and, in understanding, he returned their clasp. A new expression looked from his eyes. In silence they gathered around him. Eyes were averted, and several shoulders heaved. Finally he spoke. Boys, I come back. Little ,lim's went. I reckon he's happy up there- with his mother. An'-I'm satisfied.
