During that time he has been many things to many people. Every morning at 7:55 A.M. the Stern voice of Mr. Curran can be heard throughout the entire school as he reads the morning an- noucements. He also summons students who are in trouble to the office usually for disciplinary pur- poses. Students quake in their 'shoes when they hear their names being called because they know that Mr. Curran means business. He may be strict and rule with an iron fist but everyone knows he is always fair. To many people, Mr. Curran, the well dressed administrator in his three piece suits, is a good friend and confidant. Seniors seek his help on college applications and he willingly gives his time and assistance. Even though he is a very busy man he tries to make himself available to help students and teachers. Students know when they are having problems in a class they can count on Mr. Curran for guidance. Students also know that Mr. Curran has another side to his per- sonality. He is affectionately referred to as T.C. and he takes it all in stride because of his good sense of humor. Because he enjoys a good joke he allowed us to put the Hooski dummy in his office chair. So thank you Mr. Curran for being a strict disciplinarian, a con- cerned counselor and a very good friend. Co-Editors Rosemary Scerbo Geoff Haines STUDENT LIFE What makes Drury High School different from all other schools? Is it all the open space and classrooms without walls? Is it the administrators and counselors who help and guide students' futures? Is it the facul- ty that enriches the students with knowledge? Is it the students who till the halls with laughter? Is it the sports' teams that bring glory to the school with their numerous victories and championships? Is it the band and chorus who enter- tain at numerous school func- tions? Is it the clubs and organiza- tions that allow students to become involved in activities beyond the classroom? Drury High School was first built with the intentions of allow- ing people more freedom of movement through the use of open space. This made Drury dif- ferent from the traditional high schools which have closed, in- dividual classrooms. Since most students have never been in this kind of atmosphere, in the begin- ning, they find difficulty in ad- justing. But most students and teachers have learned to deal with the distractions and to concentrate more on their work, thus turning this disadvantage to an asset. lfiifx fjlsffihvbhf, l,.,5v! un QA 431335,-iilll , slgiggqliisiflffa- N!-iafliw' 2: i Il di ll 1 llll I da v -Luffy x m,, lqfl'-is aff. l'! fun. Every working establishment needs people who will lead and guide the other members. Drury is fortunate to have ad- ministrators , guidance counselors , and teachers who care about their students. With the help of a dedicated staff, Drury students have the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals. Students search for values and knowledge through their teachers. They strive for recognition in academics, sports, and extra- curricular activities that help them on their way to becoming adults. They know at Drury that they will find friends and counselors who will share the joy of their successes and the tears of their failures that help them to deal with the present and the future. For the most part sports are an outstanding part of any school year. Through the team ac- complishments, there has been a revival of school spirit and pride. Drury captured the Western Massachusetts Championships in football and boys' and girls' basketball, and a second place ranking in wrestling. The credit goes not only to the fine athletes, characterized by the numerous county and Western Massachusetts All-Stars, but also to the fine coaching staffs. The in- dividuals, coaches and teams have all contributed in making Drury a pride to the community. 1 1? in.,-v ' i 5' F? 5 1 FU' ' 'Lv' . , 'Wi K 3 4-v 'fkn' G w ' X,,,f Drury has many activities that offer students the chance to develop interests and display talents outside of the classroom. Many students extend their academic skills by tutoring underclassmen, writing and publishing the newly formed newspaper, THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE, and yearbook, NATHAN ITE, and assisting mid- dle school students through peer counseling. Cheerleaders, Pep Club, and Student Council help to instill a feeling of pride and spirit in the student body. Musical talent is displayed by many students through their participation in band, chorus, and musical productions. It is all of these things and more that make Drury a special place to the students, faculty and staff that study and work there. It is the dedication and interest of everyone at Drury that helps to make this time spent here a time to remember. r . . . ,-. , es 5 X l ,1 9 ' 1- .. -. 'L ,9 g I I 'I y . Fortunately, Drury High School has a very stable foundation in it's Guidance Department and Administration. This group of dedicated in- dividuals supports and guides the student body of Drury. Any authoritative body must not only show authority but also compassion if they are to be effec- tive. This is, in fact, the ad- ministration of Drury High School. The administrators are just as willing to aid a student with a problem as they are to discipline him when he is wrong. This is the key to the effectiveness of the administrators. The guidance department of a school must also be strong. It is they who will guide students into various colleges or career choices. It is important that they become familiar enough with students so that they can aid them in making wise decisions. The guidance department is dedicated and knowledgeable in their fields and aid students in making difficult decisions. The administration and guidance department are the foundation of Drury High School. It is in them that many students find answers to their questions and solutions to their problems. History also repeats itself. Because of this, a person can gain insight into the present and future from viewing the past. The social studies depart- ment allows students to study past and present relationships between people. People's attitudes and reactions vary little in similiar situations. This affords a person the oppor- tunity to view people in a more realistic light. Such skills are very necessary in a society where the small business is very common. The business department lets students become self-sufficient in these necessary skills. In a society such as ours, the private business, be it large or small, is the most practical means of making it'l. Because of the business department, Drury students are able to realize this goal. 7 V 1? 4'-.. With the help of the advisor, Mrs. Mary Ann Caproni, co-editors, Rosemary Scerbo and Geoffrey Haines, and a dedicated staff, many improvements have been made on the yearbook. The staff has doubled the number of pages produced. All underclassmen have been in- dividually photographed and a sixteen page colored senior section has been added. The procedure for producing pages has also been changed. Members of the staff cut and pasted photos on the lay out sheets. On Columbus Day weekend, the staff ran a Toll Booth at the intersec- tion of Union and Eagle Street. This eight hour function raised S1,600. There was also an assembly of all underclassmen to promote the sales of the book. Mary G. Dailey from the class of 1929 was the guest speaker. She stressed the im- portance of purchasing a year- book and how valuable the book would be in the future. This along with a movie on rock music helped to double the sale of books from the previous year. The final fundraiser was the sale of Drury hats which said Go for it Devils . Many thoughts and long hours have been spent on the production of this book which the staff hopes will be a time capsule of memories from the year 1982-1983. Club leadership was provided by President Connie Bond, Vice- President Diana Franzoni, Secretary Shawn Serre, Treasurer Judy Wong and Advisor Miss Anne Piekos. The council con- sisted of forty membersg twelve seniors, five juniors, eighteen sophomores, and five freshmen. The Student Council started the year by having a bake sale-car wash in the beginning of September. On October 30, the members sold poppies for the American Legion and on November 16 they ushered for Drury's first Open House. December was a very busy month, with the Holiday Assembly CT he Twelve Days of Christmasj, and the first Pittsfield Berkshire Council meeting, at- tended by most of the members. February's Winter Carnival was successful, even though the Snow Sculptors did not have much snow to work with. Preppy Day and the Winter Carnival Dance were ex- cellent also. In April, the Council had another bake sale-car wash, and on May 12 they hosted a blood- mobile. To reward themselves for their hard work, all the Student Council members spent the day at Riverside on June 20. The Student Council did a great job and they hope to do an even better job next year. The Girls' Varsity Basketball team amassed an overall record of 19-3 this season. Through their determination, they captured the Northern Division Berkshire County title and the Western Massachusetts Division II championship. Senior captain Sara Petropulos and frontcourt partner, senior Tammie Maruco, used their speed and jumping ability to aid the team. Guards Diane Rondeau, a senior, and Suzanne Maroni, a junior, teamed up to lead a strong defense. Another senior, Sue Cahoon, came on strong down the stretch and helped out by pulling down numerous offensive and defensive rebounds. The success of the team must also be attributed to a fine coach, Irene Bianchi. Having been a coach for only a short time, she has helped to capture three Western Massachusetts cham- pionships and three consecutive Northern Division titles for Drury. Her continuous dedication throughout the years has truly been an asset to the girls' basket- ball program. Jen Gould going up for a shot. SCORE! Girls' Basketball Drury Opponent 59 Mohawk 23 53 Mt. Petropulus led the Berkshire County league in scor- ing with a 23.2 average during the regular season, and was Drury's top rebounder with an average of 14 per game. The Blue Devil cap- tain, who was just as dangerous shooting from outside as inside, scored over 30 points in three games and over 20 in fifteen games. On February 3, 1983 Sara reached a milestone of 1,000 points against Hoosac Valley. After conquering that record she went on to beat Mary Gaudreau's record in 1979 of 1,073 points, thus setting a new girls' record for Drury. On February 23, also playing against Hoosac Valley, Sara set a new school record of total points obtained. Sara ended her record breaking season with 1,230 points and phenomenal record of 18 out of 20 freethrows. She has a pro- mising career ahead of her. Drury High School congratulates Sara. Although the squad started with thirteen members, it became reduced to eight before half the year was over. Even though this year's squad was smaller than those in the past, the spirit of it's members still re- mained high. The cheerleaders managed to keep the crowd roar- ing through the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. This year's squad also had the honor of holding the most suc- cessful pep rally in years before the Hoosac Valley-Drury football game. The whole student body rose to their feet in enthusiasm and cheered the Blue Devils on to victory. The cheerleaders helped to raise the students' spirits at the annual, Blue and White dance. Students danced the night away to music provided by 92 FLY. Throughout the year the cheerleaders sold cowbells and bumperstickers to raise money for uniforms and to spread the idea that the Drury Blue Devils are the best! Coach Kip Syrett turned the team around with some help from leading scorers Chris Falcon, on- ly a freshman, and Jeff Bona, a junior. Co-captains Paul Allard and Kevin Boland, along with seniors Jamie Hancock, a solid defenseman, Pete Esposito, and Pete Mirante, supplied the leadership. The team hit a dry spot in the middle of the year, but bounced back with a strong finish, winn- ing five of their last eight games. Also in this stretch, the team tied the eventual Western Massachusetts Championship team, St. Josephs, in a well played game. Coach Syrett and the many returning stars stand a good chance of taking the title next year. Good luck and congratula- tions for a fine season. hm.,,,, f .4 REVERSAL. . The 1982-83 Drury Wrestling team had a rough start at the beginning of the season but the overall record was 9-3. One problem the team had to overcome was getting used to a new style of coaching. Brian Col- lins, the assistant coach of last year's team, replaced Thomas O'Connor as the head coach. The assistant coaches were Wally Lesure and Pete Mancuso. The Co-Captains were Dan Potvin and John Hinkell. Brian Collins piloted the Blue Devils to a second place tie with St. Joseph's of Pittsfield in the Berkshire County League. The team took a second place victory in the annual Christmas Tourna- ment at Monument Mt. and a se- cond place victory in the Western Mass. Tournament. The wrestlers who qualified for the State Finals were Mike Sebastino, Todd Delisle, Dennis Fortini, John Forbes, Tony Rodriguez, and undefeated wrestlers John Hinkell and Dan Potvin. GU! GIRLS' TRACK The success of the Drury Girls' Track Team can bee attributed to first year coach Patty Sacco. Her knowledge of the sport and her concern for all the girls combin- ed to be the epitome of an all- around good coach. The team's success was obtain- ed by the hard-working veterans and the talented newcomers who combined to form a formidable threat to all their opponents. Tri-captain Marie-France Pa- quin and freshman Michelle Melillo caused many opponents grief in the 100-yard dash. Sue Spoffard, a three year veteran, could not be caught in the 220 and tri-captain Diane Rondeau re- mained unbeaten in the 440. Lisa Gagliano, Kristen Velyvis, and Kim Bolshaw lined up on the Drury side to put pressure on their foes in the 880. Tri-captain Jody Bolshaw and two year veteran Jill Morin combined to be a for- midable duo in the mile and Eun Yon Chung took hard-earned points in the two mile. Sophomore Bonnie Eichorn and junior Nan- cy Breda earned points in the hurdles. Diane Rondeau, Sue Cahoon and Nancy Breda soared over the bar to win the high jump. One of Drury's most important assets has quickly become the field events. Kristen Velyvis set a new school record at 91 feet in the discus. The Girls' Track Team is no longer taken lightly by their op- ponents, but instead it has become a serious threat in the division. Top: Boys' Track Team. Middle: Girls' Track Team. The other returning players and the beginners gave the rest of the team moral support at the mat- ches. Everyone received a chance to play at least once. Although, the team is still fairly young with only two seniors, Paul Allard, a four year veteran, and newcomer Pete Esposito, the team shows promise with five underclassmen veterans and six newcomers. This year's squad had more depth than in recent years with juniors Shawn Serre and Chris Ouellete. Sophmores Jerry Plock and Rocky Rosa, should be con- sistant point takers . Here it is June, 1983, time to leave behind our lives as high school students and head out into the REAL WORLD! Over the past four years many changes have occurred. We have all had our ups and downs, and we have all shared a great deal. Remember that September day when we first appeared on Drury's doorstep? We were proud of what we had been but just as frighten- ed of what was ahead. We asked ourselves Will we ever be upperclassmen? It was not long before we were. Could it be over so soon? Those four years filled with dances, pep rallies, crazy days, and sporting events passed so quickly. But it was not just any four years in high school - our class made them special years. During this past year we had a winning football team that went all the way to the Superbowl. Our school showed more spirit than it had in years. And we cannot overlook the success of our other teams, the fighting Blue and White. But did our enthusiasm end there? No! The Freshmen Recep- tion, for the first time, actually made a profit and was a huge suc- cess. Our Homecoming Week went exceptionally well with everyone participating in hat sock day, hush day, and crazy day. Now that it is time to go our seperaate ways we will all take a part of Drury High School with us. We all have our memories, the good times and the bad, but most important they are things that we have shared. Continued luck and success is wished to the entire class of 1983. Use your special abilities and make your mark on the world, just as you have made your mark on Drury. an l h 5 r V I ! 'YNNN w Y 1 , -.....-val 9 A .W V r , , 1.-5, . 1 , Jia: X - ' H ' Vp. Finally, after two years of being underclassmen, we had achieved the status of being upperclassmen. But along with the priviledges we were given, came what would be our hardest academic year. Algebra II, for most, was enough to keep us challenged, and for those students who entered calculus and trigonometry, it was an even more difficult year. We then had to cope with the formidible SAT's. We can still remember the feelings churning inside when we entered Drury Senior High that morning. As Juniors, we were also l. to r. Doreen Unis, Treasurer, Marc Lanoue, Secretary, Jennifer Curran, Vice-Prcsidentg seated, Chris Vivori, President responsible for putting on the Junior-Senior Prom. This year it was held at the North Adams State College. The band Roxx per- formed and once again did a great job. This year our Junior and Senior classes were very close and it was very hard to say goodbye to the Seniors knowing so many would be entering college and leaving in the fall. We wish them the best of luck. Now it is our turn to become the Seniors in 1983-1984 and we are going to make it the best year ever! The Sophomore class, the Class of 1985, is a class that has great spirit and tremendous pep. They are a class that is proud of their school, faculty, and students. In sports, pep rallies, assemblies, and special events that occur during the year, the Class of 85 is always there to cheer and to support the Devils on toward victory and s u c c e s s . An event that occurred during the school year was the ordering of class rings on December 8,l982. Students were excited to think that they would have their rings by February. This special event helped to unify the class. This unique symbol, a special design for the Class of 85, helps to set this class apart from those before it and those to come. As time has past, the end of sophomore year marks the mid- point of high school years. This class will have many memories as they move on to become Juniors, and finally Seniors. Mig ' AEN , . Along with them is the hope of mak- ing new friends and the fear of the seniors. After settling in, though, their fears wash away and their hopes become reality. The Freshmen Reception dance was a help in adapting freshmen to the new environ- ment and showed them that they were welcome. By now the freshmen are settled down and adjusted. Their new friends, as well as the old, have helped them ad- just and they are now part of the school. M Eg ta r ' J!
