Not the least of these is his closeness with the students. With our deepest appreciation of his interest and concern for our welfare, we, the class of 1977, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Robert Horan. - Karen Herzig Co-ed. in Chief Mr. Horan felt astounded, humble when he recieved the yearbook dedication. It made me feel that many of the hours and time put in and some of the hassles of being an administrator lParticularly a principalj makes it all worth it. - Robert Horan Principal NICHOLAS DEL EGRO Nicholas Del Negro was a teacher for twenty years at Drury. From 1956 thru 1970 he was chairman of the Science Department. From january thru june of 1970 he was acting principal, he was also acting cur- riculum coordinator at this time. He became Vice Principal for four, and one half years and taught l.S.C.S. for a half year until his death. Mr. Del Negro was a father, husband, and a friend to many. He will be sadly missed but remembered as a man who cared about everyone he came in contact with. - M. Waltermire Co-Editor-in-Chief '77' Nick Del Negro will always be remembered as a I knew Nick Del Negro as a colleague and a friend. He was a dedicated professional and a good man who cared about the welfare of the young peo- ple of North Adams. He dedicated his whole life to the people of the community without asking for the fanfare and rewards that he so richly deserved. On a personal level it was through his concern as a teacher and more importantly a friend that I was able to realize some of the important goals in my life. Nick was the type of person who made you work to realize your full potential. He had the unique ability to criticize, but at the same time you realized that the man was working for your best interests. What the community owes this man can never be repayed and I am sure that Nick never expected any return. We all can be thankful that a man of such character shared some precious moments with us during his lifetime. - Roger Cirone friend. He will be remem- bered. - Robert Maroni It was my pleasure to have known Mr. Nicholas Del Negro as a teacher and administrator. His exam- ple as a warm, courageous and sensible human being will always be rememberd. l'm sure that many of the students he came in contact with over the years of dedicated service to the North Adams Public Schools learned a great deal from him. - Robert Loretan -zgugy x NN'-'JQF HE YOU SAY DRURY . 'l ff I , f L I am pleased to take this opportunity to openly speak to the Class of 1977. The way in which you actively involved yourself in your graduation proceedings and generally worked with Principal Horan has been most impressive. I am proud of you and appreciate what you have done for your- selves and Drury High School. I sincerely wish you the very best in your future years. Dr. Robert L. Loretan Superintendent QS ROGER CIRONE ASS'T.. PRINCIPAL Message to the Class of 7977 It has been my sincere pleasure to have been blessed with such an outstanding sen- ior class in my first year as Principal of Drury Senior High School. Your efforts as positive models for the un- derclassmen have helped create a climate of respect for the dignity of all at Drury. Many people in our society are alarmed at the rapid pace of change and its effects upon our lives and social structures. This exponen- tial rate of change has overwhelmed individ- uals and groups through what has currently been termed future shock . As new graduates, the future ahead of each of you can be yours to shape and man- age. You are, and will continue to be faced with many choices, and directions that you may take. Seize your own future by putting forth your best individual effort in all that you may do. Manage and shape your future with each decision you make now, or you may also be overcome by the rapid technological and so- cietal forces of the future. I wish each of you success and happiness in your lives. Robert P. We might as well be freshmen' Kelly Rowe declares Many sen iors tend to agree Amy Grande says As the years have gone by our privleges have slowly dimished Now that we are seniors we ve lost them all Fresh men get as many privileges as Seniors Like most seniors she feels there are two issues the decrease of senior privileges and the increase of underclass privileges Study halls once a privilege reserved for juniors and seniors are now detention halls for students who cut class and violate rules In previous years there was a type of initiation called slave day An event in which freshmen become slaves of seniors for a day This year our principal decided it was a bad idea and eliminated it Five classes were not required of seniors before this year Seniors were allowed to take only subjects necessary to graduate This year however everyone was required to take five classes Mr Robert Horan said that a five class requirement was school committee policy and it had never been enforced He felt it should be enforced now Homerooms for seniors were not used for many years This year they were reinstated Mr Horan said that they would not have been if the student council had questioned him In previous years seniors could leave school when their classes were finished for lunch or free periods This privilege was abolished this year However seniors continued to leave school after classes The date of graduation has caused controversy Seniors were let out of school in late May This year seniors didn t leave until lune because Mr Horan felt we didnt need two weeks for rehearsal He felt we could be fully re hearsed in two days The seniors at Drury were not exactly thrilled over the changes The principal says that the changes are necessary and part of a plan for improvement and many of them are only temporary Mr Noran felt that when he came to our school it was very loose two thirds of the student body was cutting class He felt the first thing to do was to tighten the school schedule The reputation of Drury students had gone down the drain in the eyes of area residents as a result of vandalism and disruption Mr Horan s first goal was to restore that reputation To do this he said he had to be strict A few privileges were bound to be lost in the process ln future years seniors will have more privileges than they ever had before Programs such as open campus will be used and there will be a type of work study program in which students will work in areas they are interested in and obtain credit for it Mr Horan has several innovative ideas for the future Mr Horan says You ve got a good senior class I wish I had worked with you for four years So our loss of senior privileges is due to the change of principals and principles Unfortunately our class was caught in between -a ' 1 O T f 'F I l il . dn ' 1 ' . 1 11 - 11 11 - 1 . . . , . . . ,, 1 1 1 1 T - 1 1 r , . . , . . . . , . , . It is a time of mixed emotions for most, happiness because you're done with the work and also you can be more independentp but on the other hand a feeling of sadness and lonliness of leaving the familiar faces and schedules. Tony Mellilo said, the thing I'll miss most is being with my friends. Mary Konopka is really going to miss talking with my friends every morning. He will be remembered always by family and friends. IU: 'Ui When I think of james Kateley, I start to imagine all the times we had together. No matter if it was good or bad, we always remained friends. jimmy and I participated in many sports and I usually turned out to be us being on the same team. Our teammates always wanted jimmy to be the leader of our team. No matter what the case was, jimmy always played 100070. He set examples for his friends and for others, so that they could try to be the athlete he was. jimmy got along with everyone he met. Even if a person didn't like him, he would still try to be friends with him. He was in many of my classes from 7th grade on and I will always remember him and the times we spent together. We Zfmn crgvf PAGE 14 Monday, June 20, 1977 FOUNDED 1843 Editorial ..T Congratulations, Blue Devils YOU CAN'T do much better in baseball than to win in the bottom half of the ninth by swatting a homer with the bases loaded. But Drury has. Within the space of two days, Coach Tom McGrath's team won permission from the School Committee to accept an invitation to play in Taiwan for two weeks next june and gained a berth in the finals of the state Division ll championship. The fact that it lost the championship did little to dull the shine of its previous achievements. The team put together a record that has exicted everyone in North Adams. The kind of news it produced is rare, despite the fact the city's schools have produced some pretty im- pressive teams in the past. BOTH the status of being runner-up state champs and the forthcoming trip to Taiwan are real tributes to the kind of spirit that school athletics can engender. Drury had a hot season but it didn't come naturally. It took hard work by the players that combined with dedicated coaching, to produce the kind of energy and skill that wins games. The Taiwan trip took a coach with the ability to spot an opportunity and the belief that going halfway around the world was not beyond the reach of a high school team in the northwest corner of Massachusetts. Blue Devils You've set an example we all should emulate if we're to fashion a better city. GIRLS SOFTB LL 31 if 5 pf , a,.,kM, M, ' . The fact is that Bucky Bullett, the physical Bucky Bullett that is died many years ago. Since then, the Bucky Bullett that the entire Berkshire County population and many beyond that have known and loved was not the physical, earthly Bucky Bullett, but his unquenchable, unconquerable spirit, and that will never die. The indomitable Bucky Bullett spirit merely has gone to another assignment, to another field of activity which evidently has been deemed in need of the kind of integrity that forever will be associated with his name and his memory. This may sound like a high-flown eulogy, but really isn't. lt's nothing more than a statement of what everyone who knew Bucky believed about him. His oldest friends, and they would constitute a virtual census of the middle-age and older popula- tion, know that Bucky looked death in the face many years ago, and seemingly conquered. Sports was the medium through which he conveyed those messages. He firmly believed that sports, both in relation to participant and spectator could be an important part of a good life, and he never deviated from that belief. He had to forsake active participation in sports when he was on the threshold of what might have been a brilliant career, especially in basketball, his greatest love. This is what he said to a friend at lunch yesterday during a conversation that now seems almost to have been his valedic- tory to sports. l've always loved Basketball, he said. l loved it when I was playing it, and I love to watch it now. lt's my favorite sport, but I wish it would stay in season. But maybe there doesn't really have to be a season for sports. You just love them, and that's all by Maynard Leahey lPartial story of what was written in the Transcript Saturday, May 28, 1977.5 G igx . A collection of bizarre feet kicked off the week when students came to classes decked out for knee sock day. Wool, yarn, ribbons, bright stripes and creativity were the order of the day. The next event was the No-Talent Contest, which many students qualified for. The senior girls composed a song, sung to the tume of the Beach Boys classic, California Girls, praising the many l?l fine qualities of the Drury guys. A group of senior boys did their best to imitate girls on a rowdy night out icostuming effects were stunningl and a couple of otherwise normal women dressed them- selves up like chickens and danced a barnyard version of a twenty-year-old Big Band number. The freshman class put together a great musical number, and several people won over the audience with individual acts, such as falling off the stage on a pair of crutches or attempting unsuccessful- ly to play the guitar. The judges had a tough time making their decision, because clearly most of the participants had no talent at all. The audience cheered madly, and everyone had a great time anyway. Other Winter Carnival highlights were a student-faculty basketball game tThe faculty won the male competition but the junior girls won the female competition over a weak women's faculty team.l, a ski jump contest and a volleyball game. The final event was the Winter Carnival Ball, held at St. Anthony's parish hall. Sesame Street in the Snow was this year's theme, and life-sized reproductions of Oscar, the Cookie Monster, Big Bird and company watched over the dancers. Zarvis Allen provided the tunes. Carnival Countdown Members of Drury High ichool's Student Council have prepared a list of events for this year's Winter Carnival week, which will extend from February 28 until March 5. They are anticipating a great deal of competition among the classes and hope that all students will participate and help to make the week a success sliding party. Following this, Tuesday will be Kneesock Day and that night students will compete in a no talent contest . Wednesday will be an activity day and later that night there will be a student- faculty volleyball game. Thursday is Greaser Day. The 1977 Nathanite, yet another subjective attempt at putting a school year between covers, has finally reached your hands. At this point, you have a right to ask cynically, What good is it? What does it do? After all, any product which survives decade after decade of socio-economic flux must have a useful purpose. For some of us, yearbooks are a record, documenting our high school years in the same way snapshots document the fact that we had a date for the prom and a newspaper clipping documents the fact that we played a great game. With all the changing that goes on, you sometimes need help in keeping track of the way things were. Yearbooks are mirrors for some people, reflecting a stage of their lives that was a tumultuous success for some and a resounding catastrophe for others. Either way, we need to know that stage if we're to know ourselves. ln the long run, yearbooks are probably little more than nostalgia, something we'll be amused to discover, just as our parents are amused to discover a column of pencil lines recording our height inside some little-used door. Like the pencil lines, yearbooks are a measure of sorts. They are yardsticks for gauging our own growth. Of course, we weren't this idealistic all year. We had all of the usual problems: missed deadlines, a staff of about 30 that shrunk to two or three at worktime, a score of lost and forgotten assignments and envelope after envelope of fuzzy unfocused pictures. There were sporadic crisis sessions during the summer, lost layout sheets, broken typewriters and a string of staff excuses that would have impressed the Pentagon. Nobody ever claimed it would be easy. But now that it's all behind us, remember this: none of us ever put together a yearbook before. Most first tries teach you a lot, and this was no exception. But all of us are glad to have had a hand in the finished product. We hope you'll enjoy using it - both as a mirror now and as a yardstick later. Cheers and luck! Pat Wilk We would like to thank the editors, jean Angeli, and Deborah Buckwalter for they became the entire staff by the end of the school year. We would also ike to give a special thanks to Miss Pat Wilk for her undieing faith that we lPat, Myra, and Karenj would eventually produce a yearbook.
